Everton Football College celebrates two teams being crowned champions at the World Schools Football Cup

Everton Football College is celebrating two teams being crowned champions at the World Schools Football Cup in Barcelona.

The Football College’s Under-17s boys’ team retained the title they won in 2022, while the College’s open-age girls’ team took home the trophy in the first-ever female edition of the tournament.

In total, 46 students travelled to Spain for the competition, which attracts school and college teams from all over the world.

Having lifted the crown 12 months ago, the Football College entered two teams for this year’s Under-17s boys’ tournament, with the sides meeting in the semi-finals.

A penalty shootout determined which Blues representatives went through to a final that saw Everton Football College defeat Liverpool Foundation’s Robbie Fowler Academy, again on penalties, to bring home the silverware.

The girls’ team went undefeated through the tournament, beating Huddersfield Town Foundation in the final, and saw defender Hannah named player of the tournament.

Everton Football College currently caters for 210 students, offering youngsters an opportunity to gain qualifications and fulfil their academic and practical potential through their love of football, improving their life chances and providing avenues to university, scholarships and other work and study opportunities.

John Keegan, Head of Football at Everton Football College, said:

“We’re incredibly proud of all our players who travelled over for the World School Games and were a credit to themselves and Everton on and off the pitch.

“Our girls’ programme has gone from strength to strength over recent years – we now have more than 40 girls in the Sixth Form playing across three squads – and for them to be crowned the first World School Games champions is a deserved reward for the players and the staff for their continual hard work and dedication.

“We were also delighted to see both our boys’ teams be so competitive throughout the tournament and the only disappointment was that they didn’t get to meet in the final.

“This is an achievement all the players and the Football College can be proud of and, as importantly, it was a fantastic experience and opportunity our students will take lessons from and hopefully remember for the rest of their lives.”

Anyone who is interested in learning more about studying at Everton Football College is invited to attend an open evening at Goodison Park on Tuesday 7 November from 6pm-7.30pm GMT. The event will showcase how the Football College combines Sixth Form Study with football opportunities from its two sites in Liverpool and Vauxhall.
