The latest blockbuster from DC Studios is due to land in cinemas later this year and, with much of the action from Clayface filmed in and around Liverpool, we can’t wait to see it.

It’s going to be epic – so here’s what we know about it so far…

What is Clayface about?

Clayface is a shapeshifting villain who’s a recurring nemesis of Batman (although this film will focus on the pot protagonist!). We’ll meet DC Universe’s Matt Hagen, a struggling actor whose face is disfigured by a gangster. Desperate to regain his looks, he agrees to an experimental procedure with a chemical infusion that turns his body into a malleable, clay-like substance that enables him to reform into anyone and anything.

Who stars in it?

Welsh actor Tom Rhys Harries plays Matt Hagen/Clayface, with Naomi Ackie as Dr. Caitlin Bates; Max Minghella – son of the late Oscar-winner director Anthony Minghella and who played Nick Blaine in The Handmaid’s Tale – as John, a Gotham City Police Detective, and Eddie Marsan – V for Vendetta, Mission Impossible III, Back to Black – playing Matt Hagen’s manager.

Who is the director?

Clayface is directed by James Watkins, best known for horror films like Eden Lake, Woman in Black and Speak No Evil, and he also directed McMafia and episodes of series like Black Mirror and The Ipcress File. Clayface is produced by DC Studios.

Where in Liverpool was Clayface filmed?

Several parts of the city were transformed into key areas of Gotham City for the film including:

  •  Derby Square/Queen Elizabeth II Law Courts which became Gotham Hospital surrounded by ambulances and fake rubble, and adorned with graffiti
  • Water Street and India Buildings were used for street scenes and decorated with Gotham-themed posters and littered with rubbish
  • The Aloft Hotel in North John Street, formerly the Royal Insurance Building, was used for scenes featuring Eddie Marsan
  • The Philharmonic Hall in Hope Street became Gotham’s ‘Vesuvius’ nightclub, complete with red neon signage
  • Liverpool Central Library doubled for Gotham City Crown Court
  • The Pier Head and Waterfront areas were also used for more exterior Gotham City scenes
  • Other areas used for filming included Seacombe Ferry Terminal, and St George’s Hall and its surrounding streets

Is this the first time Liverpool has been used as a double for Gotham City?

No it’s not. Liverpool was turned into the comic book capital five years ago in 2020 for The Batman starring Robert Pattinson, which was released in 2022.

When can I see Clayface in the cinema?

Clayface is due to be screened in September, with a current release date by Warner Brothers of September 11.
