Netflix’s huge new drama series from the creator of Peaky Blinders, House of Guinness, is about to drop – and, just like the Shelby saga, lots of it was filmed here in Liverpool.

House of Guinness tells the story behind the world famous brewery and it’s definitely not just about pints and getting the perfect pour.

Oscar-nominated Steven Knight, the man behind the eight-parter, says the Guinness clan at the time were as wild as they were ambitious, adding “I’m just in awe of their zest for life — their lust for life, often literally.” So we get the picture.

The backdrop is a mix of the back alleys and stately mansions of Dublin in the 1800s, and there’ll be plenty of familiar locations for viewers to look out for.

Ahead of its premiere, here’s everything you need to know about House of Guinness and where it was filmed …

What is House of Guinness all about?

We all know the drink, but how much do we know about the dynasty that made it? House of Guinness focuses on the epic tale of the Guinness family. Set in 19th-century Dublin and New York, it starts just after the death of Sir Benjamin Guinness, the man responsible for the phenomenal success of the Guinness brewery, and the impact his will has on the future of his four adult children, Arthur, Edward, Anne, and Ben. From then on it’s a Succession-style rollercoaster of power struggles, highs, lows, scandal and heartbreak as they work to live up to their inheritance.

“It’s the extraordinary story of a family who happens to be the inheritors of the biggest brewery in the world. They’re young and are given the task of taking on this incredibly successful brand,” says Steven Knight. “The first priority is: Don’t screw it up. And the second priority is to make Guinness even bigger.”

When does House of Guinness premiere?

All eight episodes of House of Guinness will land on Netflix on Thursday September 25.

Where was it filmed in Liverpool?

Supported by Liverpool Film Office, filming happened at the end of last year at iconic locations across the city including St George’s Hall, Croxteth Hall and Stanley Dock. Scenes were shot around the Georgian Quarter, with horses and carriages seen on St George’s Hall plateau and crowds in costume outside St George’s Hall where flags and ‘vote for Sir Arthur Guinness’ banners were draped from the columns. Extras were also spotted in period clothing on Mount Street and Pilgrim Street in the Georgian Quarter.

Who’s in the cast?

There are some famous faces to look out for, including James Norton who plays Sean Rafferty, the foreman of the Guinness brewery, and Liverpool’s own rising star Emily Fairn who is Anne Plunket (originally Guinness), the only daughter of the dynasty. 27-year-old Emily, who was brought up in Stockbridge Village, trained at Guildhall School of Music & Drama and first grabbed everyone’s attention when she was cast as Casey in BBC’s The Responder. Since then she’s had a string of high-profile period roles including a ‘70s-set Black Mirror episode, the 17th-century romp Mary & George and ’60s biopic Joy.
