Did you know about the Balaclava Field, Cannon Hill Meadows, the Night Pasture or the Boothby Ground? These are just some of the important spots inside one of Wirral’s best-loved and most historic places — Birkenhead Park.

Opened in 1847, Birkenhead Park made history as one of the world’s first municipal parks and helped shape how Victorian parks were designed all over the UK and beyond. But over the years, parts of the park haven’t always got the recognition they deserve.

Now, Wirral Council wants to make sure Birkenhead Park stays protected for future generations. They’re updating the Birkenhead Park Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Plan — a document that looks at what makes the park so special and sets out how to look after it.

A conservation area is officially recognised for its architecture or historic interest, and councils are responsible for making sure they’re cared for. Birkenhead Park’s current plan was put together back in 2007 and it’s now getting a fresh look to help guide how the park is managed in the years to come.

The new draft plan has been drawn up after initial feedback and a full review of the park and its surroundings. It pinpoints the historic features that matter most, sticks to the park’s original design vision, and sets out ways to protect its unique character. The boundary of the conservation area won’t change — but the plan will help shape how the park is looked after and improved in the future.

Because conservation plans have a direct impact on people living nearby, the council wants to hear from local residents, park users and community groups. Any feedback will be used to finalise the plan.

You can read the draft plan and share your thoughts now on Wirral Council’s Have Your Say website. The consultation is open until 11 August 2025.

There’s also a chance to talk face-to-face — council officers will be at Birkenhead Park Visitor Centre on Thursday 4 July, from 5pm to 7pm, to answer questions. If you’d rather have a private chat about the plan, you can arrange a meeting by emailing heritage@wirral.gov.uk.
