Head to WWT Martin Mere for a great family day out this summer

FABULOUS flamingos, canoe safari adventures, thrilling play areas, bug hunts, and more – if you want a great family day out this summer, there’s only one place to head.

At The Wildfowl & Wetlands Martin Mere Wetland Centre in Burscough there’s more than 800 acres of wonderful wetlands, tons of wildlife, and a shedload of exciting activities guaranteeing absolutely hours of fun.

So if you want to splash into summer, here has got to be where you begin!

The flamingos are a definite must-see for starters, with their striking pink plumage and dancing displays they’re among the sparkling stars at Martin Mere; but don’t forget the white storks – you’ll probably hear them before you see them! – or the Asian short-clawed otters who’ll be showing off with daring dives that’d put Tom Daley to shame.

They’re just a few of the amazing creatures you can get up-close-and-personal to if you fancy channelling your inner-Attenborough, and only a fraction of all the great things in store.

If thrills are your thing, then the outdoor play area has got to be on your agenda with its scramble nets and zip wire, it’ll have you screaming in delight; but so too will the canoe safaris and boat tours that’ll take you on an exploration of the waterways to find out who calls them home from the moorhens to the mallard ducks and the elusive kingfisher.

You can go pond dipping, frog-finding, and you can even build your own den and, this summer, you can even find out what it’s like to be a WWT Wetland Ranger and go bird ringing, pond surveying and making a weather station! Complete the activity to attend a special ceremony and collect your ranger badge! (There’s even a fun flamingo health check too!)

And if all that gets you in flap, you can take a break at the Mere Side Café to stop for a snack and a drink before relaunching the adventure because, one thing’s for sure, every minute will be action-packed.
