It’s Christmas-s-s-s – that special time of year which is all about celebrating traditions from years gone by.
And, after leaving a sherry and a mince pie for Santa, there’s one that scousers will never want to lose – and that’s going for a cheeky drink on Christmas Day.
A quick pint down the local pub, or a glass of fizz is a must (and even better when you’ve left someone else to get the turkey on the table and cook those roasters to a crisp).
So let’s raise a glass and say ‘cheers’ to all these pubs who will be keeping their doors open and waiting to offer you a warm Christmas welcome on December 25 itself…
1. The Arkles
Just a five-minute walk from the stadium, the popular Anfield Road pub will serving between noon and 3pm – certainly time to get a couple in before Her Majesty comes on the box (and before the dinner bell is rung back home!).
2. Bear & Staff
This Gateacre Brow boozer is opening its doors from 11.30am and will call last orders at 5pm, and promises ‘a lovely day and a great atmosphere’.
3. The Rose of Mossley
This Mossley Hill local in Rose Lane will be ready to tend to your drinking needs between 12 noon and 3pm, before you head back home for food, family and the telly!
4. The Thomas Frost
There’s be nothing cold about the welcome waiting for you at The Thomas Frost in Walton Road. The team at the JD Wetherspoon hostelry will be serving your orders from 11am to 4pm.
5. The Kingsman
This popular pub in Aigburth Road is part of the Toby Carvery group and so, while they’ll be serving meals to those who have booked, they are still happily greeting those who fancy a festive drink between 12 noon and 5pm.
6. The Boat House
All ship shape of course, the Neston pub is serving drinkers – and a fantastic view of the Dee Estuary – from 11am, before weighing anchor at 6pm.
7. The North Western
Enjoy the perfect pint or glass of wine in the Lime Street venue – another JD Wetherspoon’s – and admire a class drink in this Grade II listed building, once home to the North Western Hotel.
8. The Stanley Arms
Just a stone’s throw from Bowring Park, Knotty Ash and Tarbock Road, the Sizzling Pubs venue in Roby Road is serving drinks from 12 noon to 5pm. Definitely time to rejoice.
9. The Old Post Office
Waiting to deliver a first-class pint or a spot-on red, the Old Post Office Place pub in Liverpool 1 is open between 10am and 1pm.
10. The Brookhouse
A popular Smithdown Road hostelry, The Brookhouse will be wishing customers a Merry Christmas when they open up twice on Christmas Day, between 12noon and 3pm, and 6pm until 10pm. Plenty of time for Yuletide revelry.
11. The Caledonia
Community is at its heart so the Caledonia Street pub is making sure it looks after it, by opening its doors for all who want to make the most of the festive spirit(s) – and cask ales, etc, – between 12 noon and 3pm.
12. The Albert
The traditional pub in Lark Lane, Aigburth, will be serving drinks to its Christmas customers between 12-3pm.
13. The Jolly Miller
Jolly – and Joyous – the popular pub on the corner of Mill Lane and Queens Drive will be pulling the towels off the pumps at 11.30am and serving drinks until around 2.30pm.
14. The Navigator
Ever ready to guide you to a great pint or a decent rum and coke, in fact whatever takes your fancy on Christmas Day – it’s Christmas, so you can let your hair down if you wish – the Old Swan pub in Queens Drive is open for drinks between 11am and 3pm.
15. The Shrewsbury Arms
Cheers! The Greene King pub in Claughton Firs, Oxton, is serving drinks between 11am and 4.30pm and give you a right royal welcome.
16. The Jug & Bottle
Known simply as The Jug by the locals, this pub nestled in the heart of Heswall (behind the village hall and library) is open for liquid refreshment between 12noon and 3pm.
17. The Dovetale Towers
The Dovey is looking forward to saying ‘season’s greetings’ on Christmas Day. The popular Penny Lane pub is open between 12 noon and 4pm.
18. The Philharmonic Dining Rooms
If anyone was in tune with the needs of its clientele, it’s this Hope Street Venue, so its staff will be greeting people with a smile and serving drinks between 11.30am and 6pm.
19. Peter Kavanagh’s
No-one would expect the landlady of the venue named Pub of the Year by the Liverpool and Districts branch of CAMRA 2019 to disappoint her customers on Christmas Day – and, needless to say, Rita Smith isn’t. The Egerton Street pub is open from 8pm to around 11pm.
20. The Fox & Hounds
Cunning folk will make the most of the time this lovely country pub in Barnston Road is open, so get there between 12noon and 2.30pm to raise your glass to Christmas.
