10 Autumn activities perfect for the October Half Term

Half term is almost here so it’s time to start planning some autumn activities for the kids. Here is your guide to ten of the best days out for October in and around Liverpool City Region.

Future Yard, Birkenhead

Future Yard Mosh Tots


The Mosh Tots Band are thrilled to announce a Halloween Spookathon on 29th October at Future Yard. There will be lots of exciting activities for the kids, split across two sessions. They will have a Pumpkin Treat Trail, a full set of Witches’ Halloween Crafts to get involved with, and a Scary Screen-print Workshop. Plus, there will be prizes for the Moshers with the spookiest outfits. Tickets are on sale now at £10 per child (1+) – parents go free. The sessions will take place from 11am – 1.30pm and 2pm – 4.30pm

Ness Botanic Gardens, Neston

Ness Botanic Gardens


There is lots going on at Ness Botanic Gardens to keep the kids happy this autumn. From 21st – 31st October, you can enjoy the Halloween Whodunnit trail where your family can explore Ness Botanic Gardens while you try to solve the mystery. This is a free family activity included with garden admission. There is plenty for all the family to see and a conundrum for five-12 year-olds to solve. The trail will take approximately 40 minutes to complete. From 24th – 25th October, there are Halloween crafts for the children. The education team are running Halloween themed craft workshops for you to enjoy with your children or grandchildren.


Three sessions will take place on 24th October and three sessions on 25th October:
10.30am – 11.00am
11.30am- 12.00pm
12.30pm – 1.30pm
Places must be booked in advance and are limited in each session. Children must be accompanied by parents/carers.

Eureka Science and Discovery, Wallasey

Eureka Science and Discovery


The kids will love Bothersome Beasts and their Bad Reputations.
From spiders to slime, they can learn more about the creepiest of crawlies and discussing why they’re actually quite cool.
From 21st October – 5th November the theatre will be transformed into a nest by Sally the Spider. Kids can experience the 4.3 metre, anatomically correct house spider as she hangs from the ceiling and pose for a selfie next to her 20cm fangs. Sally’s creator, Professor Arachnid, will be on hand to teach everyone about Sally and answer any questions.

Farmer Ted’s, Downholland, Lancashire

Farmers Teds


With a scary sunflower maze and pumpkin carving zone, there is loads going on at Farmer Ted’s for the kids this autumn. There are also fancy dress competitions and spooky ghost stories.

Southport Market

Southport Market


The kids will love the Wizard School craft workshop on 25th October. This popular two hour session lets your little ones dip in and out of activities to create wizarding wonder. Suitable for children aged three and over.

On 29th October the kids can enjoy the Halloween Slime craft workshop. A 45 minute session which will see the children mixing and colouring their slime creations.

The Atkinson Theatre, Southport

The Atkinson


Be inspired by the museum, gallery and theatre programme at the Atkinson in an arts and crafts workshop suitable for all the family on 26th October. There’s something for all ages, with all materials supplied and all for free. Drop-in any time between 11am – 3pm and get creative.
Children under 12 must be supervised by an adult. First come first served. You may be expected to wait until a space at a craft table becomes available.

Acorn Farm, Kirkby

The kids can enjoy a Halloween Fun Day at Acorn Farm on 31st October. From 10am – 3pm there will be spooky face painting, a fancy dress competition, spooky selfies and Halloween themed games and are you brave enough to enter the haunted house? £1 per entry. Admission to the farm is £3.50 and children £2.50, with under 12 months free of charge. Horse rides are available at the farm every weekend and bank holidays, and during Knowsley school holidays (check in advance of your visit). Tickets cost £3 for two circuits.

Knowsley Safari Park

Knowsley Safari - Halloween - The Guide Liverpool


Kids go free with a full paying adult from 21st October to 5th November and you can enjoy the Tiger Trail, that will turn into the Haunted Safari until 31st October. You will be able to enjoy all the usual safari excitement then venture on foot for the haunted safari event, take a spin on some rides and catch an animal display.

Martin Mere, Burscough


Autumn is a brilliant time to visit the wetlands at Martin Mere. And there is an extra special reason to pull on your boots and enjoy the trails this year with Eek Week running from 21st – 29th October. Keep your eyes peeled and ears pricked and engage all your senses as you make your way around the wetlands. There is also pond dipping, pumpkin carving and arts and crafts. Eek Week activities are included with admission or membership.

Storybarn, Calderstones Park

Storybarn


The kids can show off frightful fancy dress, play ghostly games, and create a spooktacular craft to take home at this Storybarn special inspired by Flavia Drago’s new book Vlad, the Fabulous Vampire. Pre-order a copy of the book and it will be ready for you to collect at The Storybarn.
Activities take place from 28th October – 5th November. Tickets are £6 per child, £5 per adult with Under ones free. This event is perfect for children aged four – nine.
