How a Liverpool baker turned a side hustle into the city’s biggest online cake shop
7 hours ago

A Liverpool bakery that started out as a passion project in a student kitchen has grown into the city’s biggest cake making business — and the only one with a full online ordering service.
Create A Cake, based in Huyton, was launched by Liam Roberts, who’s built the business from scratch and now runs a high-demand cake shop that bakes thousands of cakes each year for customers across the north west.
Liam, who’s originally from Childwall, discovered his love of baking while studying business and marketing at Liverpool Hope University. He signed up for a cake decorating night class alongside his degree — and the rest, as they say, is history.
He started baking for family and friends, creating bespoke celebration cakes in his spare time and gradually building up a loyal customer base. Before long, the orders were coming in faster than his student kitchen could handle.
Finding a space to grow the business wasn’t easy, especially while living on a student budget, but eventually Liam came across a small unit on Page Moss Lane in Huyton — a space that Create A Cake still calls home today.
“I literally faked it until I made it,” says Liam. “I didn’t even have a float in the till some days. But I was determined to make it work. Every penny I earned went back into the shop — I was eating beans on toast at home, but the business looked the part.”

The hard work paid off. The business grew steadily over the years, with Liam building a small but dedicated team of five bakers, all of whom are still with him today. But it was during the pandemic that things really took off.
While many small businesses struggled, Liam used the lockdowns as a chance to pivot. That’s when he launched Create A Cake’s online ordering system — a first for any Liverpool cake shop at the time.
“It was the best decision I ever made,” he says. “We realised no one else in the city was offering a proper online service for custom cake orders. It blew up straight away. We had to hire more staff just to keep up.”
Now, customers can choose from over 250 cake designs online, including seasonal favourites for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Easter and Christmas. And because Liam built the website himself, he can tweak it whenever needed to make sure it stays easy to use.
The shop’s slogan — Count the memories, not the calories — captures the spirit of Create A Cake, which specialises in making special occasions even more memorable with bespoke bakes that are as creative as they are delicious.
“If you can imagine it, we can make it,” Liam says. “We’ve had some wild requests over the years, but we love the challenge. And our customers really appreciate how easy it is to order. People regularly place orders at 3am.”
Create A Cake now attracts customers from across the region, with regulars travelling from as far as Crewe, Ormskirk, Wirral and Newcastle-under-Lyme to collect their cakes. Word of mouth has been a big driver of the business, helping it grow organically without big ad budgets.
The shop is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm, and Saturday from 9am to midday. The website is accessible 24/7.
