How you can celebrate National Cinema Day in Liverpool

Saturday is National Cinema Day celebrating the experience of seeing our favourite movies on the big screen.

To mark the occasion, selected cinemas in Liverpool will be taking part in a special offer, selling tickets to some screenings from just ÂŁ3.

Cinemas will be showing a mix of recently released films and bringing back classics you haven’t been able to see in a theatre for many years.

While we all love settling down on the couch and using streaming services to watch whatever we want, there is nothing quite like going to the pictures.

Who can forget the thrill of a new Harry Potter movie, or queuing round the block when we were children to watch a big new release like ET?

These days, we can enjoy a drink from the bar while we watch a movie or even a meal, or we can support a local community cinema, like The Plaza in Crosby. This old picture house first opened in 1939 and showed movies to more than 1400 people in its heyday.

However, in 1995 it was threatened with redevelopment and a campaign was launched to save it.

Today The Plaza Community Cinema is alive and well thanks to fundraisers and volunteers and serves the local community brilliantly. Where could be a better place to celebrate National Cinema Day?

If Crosby is a little bit too far from you, there are others taking part. You can enjoy a movie from ÂŁ3 at Odeon Liverpool One or Switch Island, the Picturehouse at FACT in the city centre, or the Showcase Cinema on the East Lancashire Road.
Not all films are included, so be careful when booking.

National Cinema Day

Iain Jacob, chair of Cinema First, the industry body that supports UK cinema-going, said:

“There seems no better time than now to celebrate UK cinema-going, one of the nation’s favourite out of home leisure activities.

“Coming off the back of a very strong summer for the sector and looking forward to further film highlights over the rest of the year, we wanted to give everyone a chance to enjoy the big screen experience with the film of their choice.”

Check out your local Liverpool cinema’s website to see if they are taking part and book online or at the box office when you arrive.

Just remember cinemas might be a bit busier than usual.
