‘The Legend of Ned Ludd’ is coming to the Liverpool Everyman Theatre from 20 April – 11 May.
Prepare to embark on a thrilling journey of unpredictability as the Liverpool Everyman introduces a groundbreaking new play, The Legend of Ned Ludd.
Set against the backdrop of societal shifts influenced by work, automation, and capitalism, this daring production takes storytelling to unprecedented heights, promising an unparalleled experience for audiences each time.
Written by Joe Ward Munrow, the show challenges traditional theatrical norms with its dynamic approach.
In this innovative production, three versatile actors find themselves subject to the whims of ‘The Machine’ – a central entity in the play with the power to select from 256 possible scenes, resulting in 15 randomly chosen scenes performed live during each show.
This ingenious concept ensures that every performance is a unique and unpredictable exploration of humanity’s relationship with automation and decision-making.
The Legend of Ned Ludd takes the audience on a whirlwind global commute, exploring scenes from different moments in history and locations worldwide. From the Luddites’ protest in the nineteenth century to contemporary stories in London, Liverpool, Lagos, and beyond, the play looks at the impact of capitalism and globalisation on working people.Â
Award-winning playwright Joe Ward Munrow said:
“It’s a play about people, work and automation. It explores what happens when machines make decisions rather than humans. As we wrestle with the impact of AI and algorithms on our lives, I wanted to look at how this has been a timeless question. I’m hoping it will be an entertaining reflection on the history of work, class, and the impact of technology on our lives.”Â
The cast of The Legend of Ned Ludd includes Reuben Johnson, Menyee Lai, and Liverpool native Shaun Mason, each bringing their unique talent and perspective to the stage.
Directed by Jude Christian and featuring set and costume design by Hazel Low, lighting by Laura Howard, and sound design by Kieran Lucas, the production promises to transport audiences into a world of intrigue and discovery.
The Legend of Ned Ludd  is the first of three homegrown productions to celebrate the Everyman’s 60th year, with a special £60 deal to see all three shows. The show opens next month with accessible performances and a series of wraparound events too.
