Jamie Webster films new music video with This City Is Ours’ James Nelson-Joyce at Blackstock Market

Blackstock Market came to the rescue of Liverpool singer Jamie Webster yesterday after he was on the lookout for a city roof terrace to film his new music video.

Jamie put a shout out on Instagram with a photo of what he was looking for. “So we showed him a picture of our new roof garden – which he said was a bit too posh,” laughs Paul Blair, co-owner and co-founder of Blackstock Market and Hot Water Comedy, which opened its new roof garden only a month ago.

But Paul and his team had another idea.

“I sent him a photo of our other roof above the whisky bar (to the left of the building) which we plan to turn into a sky garden,” says Paul, “and said it was a shame we couldn’t use that.

“But of course, Jamie looked at that and loved it – and asked if there was any way they could use it.

“I told him it wasn’t really accessible but we could probably make it work, and so it came about from that.”

Jamie spent around three or four hours on the roof terrace, filming with a group including Bootle actor James Nelson-Joyce who played gangster Michael Kavanagh in This City Is Ours, and Paul says:

“I don’t know what the single’s called or when it’s out, but Jamie and James and the crew were really nice.

“My brother Binty was there hosting them, and says it went really well.

“With the rooftop not being developed, it was exactly what they were looking for – and the views are insane from there – and it’s bizarre to think that at some point, exactly where they were filming will have customer seating!”

Paul adds:

“The guys were all really nice, really sound, and the staff all got photos with them, they were made up.

“Lily, our assistant manager, was very, very starstruck. I think Jamie and James were her two dream guys, and so she had a great shift.  Her venue report after said ‘not much happened today, quite a quiet Wednesday…not! And then she went into how she’d enjoyed it so much.

“She’ll be wanting more like that!”

That side of the Blackstock building already has a history, having been used in the blockbuster film 51st State with Samuel L Jackson and the Netflix series Top Boy: “I think 51st State filmed a couple of floors down and someone got killed there,” reveals Paul, “and there was a big chalk mark made around the body.”

Paul says he and co-founder brother Binty hope to open the rooftop as a sky garden for up to 500 people by about May next year.

And he says: “It will be something different from what Liverpool, or even the UK, has ever seen.”
