Jurgen Klopp: The Man Who Made Us Dream
LFC fan, Lee O’Connor, shares his views on the news of Klopp’s pending departure from Liverpool Football Club at the end of this season:
Seeing a friend’s Facebook post about Jurgen Klopp leaving Liverpool, my first thought is, “This has got to be a joke.”
I head straight to Sky Sports News to confirm the story is nonsense. But there it is, breaking news.
“Klopp to leave Liverpool at end of season.”
The headline reads like an obituary to a lifelong friend.
I’m not sad or angry. I don’t feel any emotion at all. Just emptiness.
Why, Jurgen? We’ve been through so much together. Don’t leave us now.
My phone lights up with WhatsApp messages.
“Have you seen the news about Klopp?”
I must be having a nightmare. Can someone wake me up?Â
Jurgen Norbert Klopp has been making dreams come true from the minute he walked through the door at Liverpool Football Club almost 9 years ago.
Because despite declaring himself ‘The Normal One’ in his first press conference, his time as manager has proven he’s anything but.
Premier League Champions. Champions League Winners. FA Cup Winners. League Cup Winners. Club World Cup Champions.
Games and moments that will live long in the memories of football fans across the globe.
The stunning semi-final comeback against Barcelona. Smashing 7 past United at Anfield.
Origi’s last-minute winner against Everton. Alisson’s header at West Brom. The list goes on.
With Klopp at the helm, the impossible didn’t just feel possible; it felt probable.
That he’s got the best win percentage of any Liverpool manager in history (60.7%) is remarkable considering the iconic managers that went before him.
But more than the wins and the trophies and the glory, what makes Klopp so special to Liverpool fans is the man himself.
He’s a force of nature. He’s warm, funny, quick with a quip. The perfect fit for Liverpool. He’s like us, so he gets us. He understands that football is more than a game in this city; it’s a way of life.
He lives and breathes the same way we do – with infectious enthusiasm.
Sadly, he no longer feels he can give us the dynamism we deserve or the energy we’ve come to expect.
“I always invested everything I had. I realised my resources are not endless and I prefer to pack everything into this season and then have a break or stop or whatever. We’re not young rabbits anymore and we don’t jump as high as we did.”
His words are hard to take, but they make sense. Jurgen Klopp has given his all to Liverpool Football Club. We can’t ask for any more.
Under his leadership we’ve reached new heights. We’ve conquered all of Europe. We’ve gone and won the lot.Â
As heartbreaking as it will be to see him walk away from Anfield at the end of the season, we’ll always be grateful. Not only for what’s gone before but for the position of strength he leaves us in.
That’s the measure of the man.
Let’s show him what he means to us by getting behind his Mighty Reds like never before and driving them to success on all fronts.
It’d be a fitting tribute to roar the team home to a clean sweep and watch him leave with the weight of four winner’s medals around his neck.
Whilst he’s still here, there’s every chance we’ll do just that.
Because Jurgen Klopp has never been The Normal One. He’s The Extraordinary One.
And for another four months, he’s ours.
Plenty of time for him to make our dreams come true again.Â
