Knowsley Safari launches new careers sessions for budding animal keepers

Responding to an increase in the green jobs market*, Knowsley Safari is offering a new range of taster sessions for 11 to 16-year-olds, aimed at highlighting the range of careers available in safaris and zoos.

Conservation is at the heart of Knowsley Safari, however there are a whole host of careers that make the business function on a day-to-day basis, from animal keepers and educators to the less obvious retail, catering, security and maintenance jobs; zoos and safaris have a wide variety of vocational opportunities.

The new sessions host up to 35 students and will include job and career discussions, as well as help with skills development, including teamwork and problem solving, alongside a series of classroom-based activities.

Pupils will take part in interactive activities such as using microchip scanners to identify individual animals within a species group, recommend treatments for sick animals and learn how to prepare feed for meerkats using scales and food props.

The launch of the sessions will take place at all about STEM, Experience of the Workplace event, Liverpool Hope University on Monday 10th March, with the 45-minute sessions available to pupils on site at Knowsley’s dedicated Safari School, between September 2024 and April 2025.

Knowsley Safari - Taster Sessions

Ben Poole, School Supervisor, Knowsley Safari said:

“Our learning and discovery sessions for Key Stage 1 and 2 children have been running for some time and are always popular, so now it’s wonderful to be able to develop a programme specifically for older students, who are giving serious thought about their future career paths.

“The sessions are available for schools to book now for the next academic year. We’re so excited to be inspiring the next generation of animal keepers, conservationists, caterers and beyond.”

Sessions are priced £12.95 per student, with an optional guided tour of the Safari bookable for an additional extra cost. For further information and to book please email learning@knowsley.com.
