Lime Street Central installs football tables with female players to show support for Women’s Euros
2 years ago
To celebrate the upcoming Women’s Euros, popular Liverpool city centre pub, Lime Street Central, has commissioned and installed a bespoke football table which features all female players.
The all-female installation appeared in the pub this week as part of Greene King’s ongoing commitment to raising awareness of female sports teams, especially ahead of the Women’s Euro 2022 tournament.
A recent survey carried out by Greene King which polled 2,000 people, found that 70% of us believe there is a lack awareness and support for women’s sports teams compared to mens.*
The pub has added a monetary mechanism to the football tables, and it costs £2 for a half hour session, with all money raised being donated to Women in Sport, which aims to empower women and girls through sport.
Wendy Hawk, Head of Engagement and Communications at Women in Sport, added:
“We are delighted that Greene King has chosen our charity as part of this campaign to recognise the value of women’s sport whilst claiming their part in raising visibility across local communities.
“The shocking statistics do not surprise us; we hear time and time again how women and girls want to celebrate female elite sports stars and yet cannot easily access the opportunity to do this.
“Seeing a new generation of female role models on our screens will inspire women, girls and families to experience the joy, fulfilment and life-long benefits that sport can bring.’
With recent reports from BBC highlighting that viewership of female football has risen by over 140% in the first half of 2022, it is clear that there is an increased appetite for women’s sport.
Earlier this year Greene King pledged to show more women’s sport at its city centre pu[JK1] bs, starting with all televised matches of the Women’s Super League and now followed by this year’s Women’s Euro tournament.
Greene King is also working with international footballer Millie Bright to raise awareness of women’s sports fixtures across its venues.
Millie said: “It’s great to see companies like Greene King backing women’s sports through initiatives such as their screenings and football tables. Awareness and support for women’s sport has come a long way in the last few years but there’s still progress to be made.”
Stuart Robertson, General Manager at Lime Street Central said, said: “We’re excited to have a bespoke female-only football table installed at Lime Street Central, not only will they help raise awareness and support for women’s sports, but it will also help raise money for Women in Sport.”
