Little Reds superfan Isaac sings Virgil van Dijk anthem to celebrate new mural of his hero

Little Reds superfan Isaac Kearney has celebrated the unveiling of a new Anfield mural of his hero, Virgil van Dijk, by singing an anthem dedicated to him.

The six-year-old from Kirkby won the hearts of supporters around the world when a video of Virgil and Mo Salah surprising him at this school, Northwood Community Primary, went viral with millions of views.

Isaac, who has Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome, went on to meet the rest of the players in training then walk out alongside the captain as mascot for Liverpool’s win over Man City.

Now he’s been back at Anfield as the latest mural by MurWalls was revealed, showing Virgil with his post-contract signing message ‘It was always Liverpool’.

And the music-loving lad couldn’t resist the chance to get out his mini guitar and perform an extra special version of the Virgil song in front of the giant artwork on Coningsby Road.

In his replica LFC kit – with the captain’s number 4 shirt, of course – and an over-sized MurWalls baseball cap, Isaac led a sing-a-long for van Dijk.

MurWalls founder Marc Silver arranged the surprise for the Reds’ most famous little fan after chatting to his mum on social media.

He explains:

“We’ve been in touch with Isaac’s family for quite a while, and seeing his story we just thought he was an absolutely amazing lad.

“There are lot of kids out there who are going through challenges but I think his story has come to light because his personality has really come through and he puts a smile on everyone’s faces. He’s just such a joy to be around.

“When we revealed our mural for David Johnson we messaged and invited them to pop down because we thought it would be nice to meet them but unfortunately they were on holiday so I promised to let them know the next time we were doing one.

“A few days into the Virgil mural, I got in touch with Isaac’s mum Melissa and said, ‘if you want to come down and say hello, we could even get him to give us a hand’.

“The day before we had the head of the Dutch Liverpool fan group there, they got married over the road and she came down in her wedding dress with her new husband.

“They had a dance and there was someone from The Ragamuffins who got his guitar out and had a singsong. I thought that was cool so when I was speaking to Melissa I said, if Isaac wants to bring his guitar down we can have a little singsong so he did the Virgil Van Dijk chant.”

Marc says the Virgil mural had been planned for a while, before the Reds clinched the title, but being able to unveil it just ahead of the final game of the season and the parade was perfect timing.

“It wasn’t actually linked to the title win even though it was pretty obvious they were going to do it,” he adds. “It was about celebrating Virgil and what he’s done for the club and for the community because he does a lot of great work in the community and charitable work.

“But the timing made it even better because he’s going to be lifting that trophy on Sunday so all eyes will be on him.”
