If you haven’t had a Liver Bird Wing pics, are you even scouse?
Acclaimed Liverpool artist Paul Curtis, best known for his ‘For all Liverpool’s Liver Birds’ mural in the Baltic Triangle, has completed his latest commission at the new Liverpool Shopping Park.
Titled ‘The Colourful City’ – Paul has created a vast 100 sq metre (2.5 metres high by 40 metres long) piece of brightly coloured artwork on site hoardings, which can be seen as shoppers enter the park via the new purpose-built access road, Milton Road off Edge Lane. The new hoardings surround the land designated for future development of Liverpool Shopping Park.
Paul’s design depicts 31 of the city’s landmarks, the history of Edge Lane, the city and site’s connection with Meccano and Liverpool Shopping Park’s future as a major retail destination. Paul started work on the design just before the park’s first retailers opened last month and it has taken more than four weeks and 28 litres of paint to complete.
Paul Curtis said: “I’m Liverpool born and bred and have a real love for capturing the city’s spirit and icons in my paintings. The main focus of the design is undoubtedly Liverpool’s best-known landmarks and some of buildings have been reworked to appear like they have Meccano sections, in a nod to the site’s history.”
Michelle Atack, marketing manager for The Derwent Group, which is developing Liverpool Shopping Park said: “Liverpool Shopping Park has got off to a triumphant start and there’s a huge amount of activity on site as more and more retailers open in phase one. Now, as the rest of the site is prepared for future development, we thought we should make the hoardings a piece of art in their own right and capture the vibrancy and energy of Liverpool Shopping Park so far. Paul is exceptionally talented and we’re delighted that we have some of his original artwork here on site.”
Paul’s artwork is the second art installation at Liverpool Shopping Park, which is also home to the world’s largest Liver Bird, standing at 11 metres tall and made out of Meccano.
Liverpool Shopping Park is set to be the UK’s largest shopping park once complete with 727,000 sq ft of retail space and parking for 1500 cars. The park’s first retailers, which include Smyths Toys, Boots, H&M and Outfit, opened on October 20th and have been quickly followed by River Island, Subway, Chiquito and Regatta. Further store openings are planned for the months ahead including Next, M&S Food Hall and TK Maxx. Liverpool Shopping Park is part of the Albert Gubay Charitable Foundation.
