Liverpool charity urges people to play their part in preventing suicide
47 minutes ago

A men’s suicide prevention charity with a centre in Liverpool is calling on local people to play their part this World Suicide Prevention Day, Tuesday 10 September.
Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 35, and three quarters of all suicides are male. James’ Place provides free, life-saving therapy for men in suicidal crisis at centres in Liverpool, London and Newcastle.
The charity aims to see men for an initial assessment within two working days of them reaching out, and since opening its Catharine Street centre seven years ago, has helped more than 2,300 men in Liverpool and the North West find hope for the future.
Although men can self-refer, more than half of referrals come from health and community services, while friends and family account for around 6%. Anyone can refer a man they are worried about, with his permission.
At James’ Place, trained therapists work with men over 6–8 sessions to get to the heart of their crisis — often triggered by events like relationship breakdown, money worries or bereavement — and help them move forward.
Andy Noon, Head of Centre at James’ Place Liverpool, said:
“It’s so important for all of us to play our part in preventing suicide by looking out for each other, asking directly if someone might be suicidal, and knowing where support can be found. If you’re worried about a man in your life, find out more at jamesplace.org.uk.”
One man who found help at James’ Place is Anthony, 54, from Liverpool. After retiring and struggling with drinking and unresolved trauma linked to Hillsborough, Anthony attempted to take his own life. With support from his sister, GP and James’ Place, he was able to face his past and begin recovery.
“Without James’ Place and my family I am uncertain I would be here today,” he said. “It feels like I have been given another chance at life.”
If you or someone you know is in crisis, immediate help is available by calling NHS 111 and selecting option two, contacting Samaritans on 116 123, texting SHOUT to 85258, or visiting your local A&E.
Further support can be found through the Hub of Hope app.
