Liverpool Indie Choir is bringing together 1000 voices for the city’s ‘biggest ever singing event’

Liverpool Indie Choir is aiming to bring together 1000 voices to form a mass people’s choir and create the biggest singing event the city’s ever seen.
The idea for 1000 Voices, raising funds to support two local charities, came from Liverpool Indie Choir director Tim Taylor.
He organised an open group singing session last year which was such a hit he decided to scale it up for the next one.
Tim explains: “At Leaf in November we had about 120 people there and it was a massive success, it was a great night and everyone had loads of fun, so I realised it could be something we could do more often and bigger.
“I just thought it would be amazing to get such a huge group of people together doing this because I’ve always believed choir should be accessible to everybody.
“I know a lot of people think they can’t sing, or they won’t be suitable for choir, but the reality is that most people are perfectly capable and it’s such a wonderful experience singing together.
“At our Thursday group we have 60-plus people and for me, standing in front of them belting songs out, it’s a fantastic feeling and just being a part of something like that like can be really emotional.”
1000 Voices will be at Camp and Furnace on Monday September 9, with ticket sales going to support two local charities – Woodlands Hospice, where his wife Sarah’s mother was cared for after a diagnosis with ovarian cancer, and Bradbury Fields Centre for visually impaired adults in West Derby.
The first half of the event will feature a performance by Liverpool Indie Choir and then the second half will be dedicated to the big sing.
“We’ll do six or seven songs, fun stuff, then we’re planning on inviting a young emerging artist to come along and perform in the interval before we have the mass choir in the second hour.
“I understand that people can be nervous about joining a choir full-time, and I’ve been a member of choirs so I can relate to that, but this gives you a chance to just give it a go. Nobody’s going to be judging your voice and there’s safety in numbers so you get all the benefits without any nerves.
“There’s a tribalism and a collective camaraderie in a large group of people singing together which is unlike any other experience, it’s very very powerful.”
Tim says it’s a great opportunity for singers to come along on their own, with friends or workmates, their mums and dads, nans and grandads, and be part of something special.
“This will be the biggest singing event the city has ever seen and we’re incredibly excited to give back to two amazing charities while enjoying some fantastic tunes together.
“We want to bring the city together and unite with the power of group singing,” he adds. “Liverpool is a passionate city with a rich musical history, so what better way to fundraise!”
1000 Voices is at Camp and Furnace on Monday September 9 from 7pm to 10.30pm.
