Liverpool libraries to join 50 other North West venues for special ‘Rhyme Time’ sessions next week

Libraries across Liverpool will be stacking up support for children’s literacy as they take part in a special ‘rhyme time’ session later this month.
On Thursday 19 June at 10.30am, five libraries will be joining around 50 other venues across the North West to host a free, simultaneous story and singalong activity, with thousands of families expected to join in the fun.
The Liverpool locations getting involved are Central Library, Lee Valley, Sefton Park, Spellow and Wavertree libraries – there’s no need to register attendance and people are invited to turn up on the morning.
The aim of the session is to promote a love of reading and develop language skills. They involve songs, rhymes, stories and movement, often with an opportunity to share games, instruments and toys. Importantly, they include synchronised face-to-face songs and stories, promoting bonding and wellbeing.
Data released last year shows Liverpool is below the national averages in early years development and attainment in primary and secondary schools, highlighting the importance of literacy initiatives such as this.
The event has been organised by Libraries Connected, an independent charity that supports, promotes and represents public libraries, and in a recent survey carried out they discovered that 97 per cent of teachers said rhyme times are important for young children’s development, with 66 per cent saying they are “very important”.

Other areas taking part on the 19th are libraries across the Liverpool City Region, Manchester, Wigan, Oldham and Rochdale.
Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member responsible for libraries, Councillor Harry Doyle, said:
“Our libraries are magical places where stories come to life and imaginations grow. This mass rhyme time is a brilliant way to bring families together, spark a love of reading, and support children’s development in a fun and joyful way.
“I’m proud that Liverpool is part of this celebration of learning.”
Isobel Hunter MBE, Chief Executive of Libraries Connected said:
“This is such a brilliant way to showcase the value of libraries for babies and toddlers. Rhyme times are such joyous events, filling the library with songs, stories and laughter.
“They’re also a valuable opportunity for parents and carers to meet and make new friends at what can be a lonely and overwhelming time. And what’s more – they’re completely free!”
