Taking on a new sense of poignancy as the impact of the pandemic on the global community becomes apparent, Jamie’s version was recorded before the national lockdown and the simultaneous play of the track on radio stations from the UK, to Holland, to Luxembourg and Spain, on Friday, March 20.
Following the emotional, nationwide round of applause organised as a show of appreciation for stretched NHS staff putting their lives at risk, Jamie decided to repurpose his track for a good cause after it was originally scheduled to mark the end of the football season.
The former electrician from Norris Green says: “Although so much now feels so insignificant in light of people’s suffering and loss during this pandemic, music can remain one thread that keeps us together in hope. That a charity appeal needs to be established to do our NHS staff justice, to try and keep them in good health, good spirits and able to continue helping those in most need is a sad reflection on those elected to safeguard our health service, but here we are.
“I hope this version of You’ll Never Walk Alone, a song which we hope to sing together again in happier times, will contribute to letting our NHS staff know they are appreciated and contribute to their resilience at this critical time.
By downloading the track – recorded and released in 1963 by Merseybeat legends, Gerry and The Pacemakers, the Rogers and Hammerstein classic written for the 1945 musical Carousel before becoming LFC’s anthem - after its release date, fans of Jamie and the song will be supporting the charity, with every penny that Webster’s label receives from distributors including iTunes, Amazon and Spotify going to the fund
All proceeds will go to the NHS Charities Together Covid-19 Urgent Appeal which aims to help by:
* Funding well-being packs/gifts for staff and volunteers on wards/departments (this could include food deliveries, high energy/protein bars/drinks, snacks, refreshments, wash kits, overnight stay kits.)
* Providing the cost of travel, parking, accommodation for NHS staff and volunteers Volunteer expenses.
* Supplying other items requested by NHS Charities that enhance the well-being of NHS staff and volunteers caring for COVID-19 patients.
Jamie’s own songs, including the singles Weekend In Paradise and Living For Yesterday have been streamed hundreds of thousands of times and he’s played sell-out shows across the UK as well as in India, Australia and the US. He performed for 60,000 Liverpool fans in the centre of Madrid prior to the 2019 Champions League Final and is a regular fixture on stage at the fan-led BOSS Nights, which have galvanized support for the club.
