Liverpool musicians given a chance to record in the former of home of George Harrison

Four Liverpool musicians have been given a Fab opportunity of a lifetime – to record in the former home of Beatle George Harrison.

Richard Batty, aka Ambro River, Cal Ruddy, Liz Owen and Morgan Wood were invited to play at the house in Speke by American owner Ken Lambert.

Beatles fan Ken, who lives just outside Boston, bought George’s family home Upton Green at auction in November 2021.

He wanted to keep the incredible music legacy of the property alive by turning the living room into a recording studio for the day.

The four artists met up to record songs there and now they are being released over the next couple of weeks on social media accounts for the house.

Ken explained: “Music is such a key part of that home and I had this idea when I first bought the house almost a year and a half ago. I’ve had a few special events there and some other music ones but I wanted to do this and give an opportunity to some local up and coming musicians.

“We chose singer songwriters, each with an acoustic guitar, because I didn’t want a full band or anything too loud with it being a terraced house in a residential neighbourhood.

“I work with a Liverpool-based marketing assistant who was familiar with them and she said they were all good, and now I’ve seen the recordings of all four I’m happy to say that’s true.”

Ken bought Upton Green, where George Harrison lived until the early 60s, without ever having seeing it in person. At the time he’d never even visited England before, although Liverpool has become like a second home to him since.

As a huge George Harrison fan, he was just keen to own a part of the Beatle’s history.

“I’ve been on the National Trust’s tour and seen Paul and John’s houses, Forthlin Road and Mendips, and that was great but I think there’s a good amount of the Beatles story at Upton Green that people were kind of ignoring for many years so now we’re trying to bring that back.

“George was always my favourite Beatle and is still my favourite, so that was key for me. If the opportunity had come to buy Paul’s house, I wouldn’t have done it because George is my favourite so that was the personal connection.”

Ken now rents the home on Air BnB and has fans from all over the world coming for a unique experience.

“People usually stay overnight or for two or three days and it’s a big deal for them, just like it’s a big deal to go to Mendips and Forthlin Road but here you can actually stay and play the guitar in the same room where the Beatles rehearsed. You can’t do that in the other places.”

Ken says the music project was just as special for the four musicians who took part.

“They all met each other at the house, then they had an hour and a half slot to do their recording. They all did a fine job and the artists had a blast there because they’re all Beatles fans so it was a once in a lifetime opportunity for them.”
