Liverpool ONE unveils new pioneering recycling facility to boost sustainability
6 months ago
Liverpool ONE is set to unveil a new innovative Mobile Segregation Unit (MSU), the first of its kind at a retail destination in the UK.
Liverpool ONE will be the first shopping destination to install a MSU in the UK, continuing to lead the way in sustainability in the retail sector. Previously, this innovative facility has been only used at major transport hubs like London Victoria Station, St Pancras Station and Birmingham Airport. At London Victoria, a 73% reduction in carbon emissions linked to waste collection vehicles was achieved thanks to the efficiency on storage and treatment of waste.
The pioneering material recovery facility will significantly boost recycling rates across the retail and entertainment destination, with a view to achieve a recycling rate of 90% of waste by 2025, up from the current rate of 41%.
For years, Liverpool ONE has successfully kept 2,560 tonnes of waste out of landfill each year, maintaining a ‘Zero Waste to Landfill’ status and has met high industry standards on waste management. Now, with the MSU, the recycling rate will double and more types of materials will be identified and recycled, reaching all areas of operation at Liverpool ONE.
The MSU allows for the sorting of waste into eight categories instead of the current five. This means more items disposed of at Liverpool ONE will be recycled, contributing to a cleaner and greener environment.
The new waste management system has been implemented to offer more recycling options for brands at Liverpool ONE, ensuring that everyone can participate in these enhanced recycling efforts. This change not only helps the environment but also positions Liverpool ONE way ahead of the new recycling regulations being phased in 2025-2027.
With the MSU, Liverpool ONE expects to reach a 90% recycling rate within a year, making a significant impact on the environmental footprint and setting an example for others to follow.
Iain Finlayson, Estate Director at Liverpool ONE, said:
“Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do at Liverpool ONE, from improving the biodiversity of our green spaces to encouraging tenants, staff and visitors to do what they can to help us with managing our waste responsibly.
“We’re proud to be the very first retail and entertainment destination to introduce an MSU and set a new standard. We hope other shopping destinations will follow suit and take similar steps to manage their waste and be environmentally responsible.
“The introduction of this MSU will help us to achieve our ambitious targets for waste reduction, recycling and sustainability, making Liverpool a cleaner and greener city for our visitors to spend time in.”
Josh Katz, General Manager of the MSU division at The Green Block (TGB), said:
“At TGB we are committed to delivering safe and sustainable solutions. We are delighted to be supporting Liverpool ONE in their sustainability journey, leading the way among retail and entertainment destinations. The arrival of the MSU will increase waste recycling rates and reduce carbon emissions backed by data-driven reporting.”
