Liverpool parents thank Claire House for the support ‘through the highs and the lows’

Amelia and Brian Christie thank Claire House Children’s Hospice for the support since before their son Oliver was even born.
Amelia & Brian first found out that their son Oliver would be born with a heart condition at the 20-week scan back in August 2020, since then, Claire House has had their back every step of the way.
Amelia said:
“Our journey with Claire House began before our son Oliver was even born,”
“At our 20-week scan, we were told there might be something wrong with his heart. We walked into the hospital full of excitement and left feeling devastated.
“A second scan confirmed our worst fears; our baby had a serious heart condition. That’s when Claire House stepped in, and they’ve never left our side.
“Those final months of pregnancy were filled with fear and uncertainty, but Claire House nurse Kat became our rock. She came to every antenatal appointment, helped us understand the medical jargon, and gave us the emotional support we desperately needed.
“When Oliver was born in December 2020, Kat was there. I’ll never forget her saying, ‘He’s here and he’s breathing on his own.’ It was the most beautiful moment of our lives.”

She added:
“Oliver has already undergone four open-heart surgeries and spent much of his early life in and out of hospital. He’s tube-fed, needs medication around the clock, and faces daily challenges, but he’s the happiest little boy you’ll ever meet. He’s always smiling, full of life, and brings joy to everyone around him.
“As Oliver faces his fifth heart surgery, we know Claire House will continue to be there for us, every step of the way. They’ve helped us through the worst and celebrated the best with us.
“Claire House has been our lifeline. From the beginning, they’ve supported us emotionally, medically, and practically. They were there through the darkest days, like when Oliver’s condition deteriorated after his second surgery and he was rushed to intensive care. We thought we might lose him. The Claire House team stayed with us the entire time, holding our hands and helping us navigate the chaos.
“But Claire House isn’t just there for the hard times. They’ve helped us make the most of life and create happy memories we’ll treasure forever. Whether it’s painting a keepsake with Oliver’s footprint or simply giving us space to breathe, they always find a way to bring light into our lives.
“One of the most special memories we’ve made was on our wedding day [at The Vincent Hotel in Southport in June 2022]. A member of the team came along to care for Oliver throughout the day, so we could relax and enjoy every moment with our son, without having to worry about any of his medical needs. It meant the world to have him there, smiling in the photos, dancing with us, and being such a big part of the day.
“Oliver also enjoys respite stays at the hospice. His first overnight stay was a big moment for us. Knowing he was in safe, loving hands allowed us to relax and spend some time together as a couple, something we rarely get to do. And Oliver absolutely loves it there. He’s made friends, played games, and taken part in so many fun activities.
“One of his favourite events was the Wild West Fest. He had the best time dressing up as Woody, the cowboy from Toy Story, dancing, and joining in all the fun. Seeing him so happy and carefree, surrounded by people who understand his needs, was incredibly special.
“We honestly don’t know how we would have made it this far without Claire House. They helped us find joy in the everyday, even when life felt overwhelming. Thanks to them, we’ve created a childhood full of love, laughter, and unforgettable memories for our little boy.”

Oliver enjoys his respite stays at Claire House and attending Claire House events such as the Wild West Fest.
In October 2025, Oliver featured in an episode of Nisha Katona’s Home Kitchen on ITV to shine a light on Claire House and Nisha’s charitable work.
In September 2025, Oliver’s dad Brian performed in the group dance at the Claire House does Strictly event to raise vital funds and awareness for the hospice.
