Liverpool Statue Selfie Tour: How many famous faces can you tick off our list?

Liverpool was once again back in the national spotlight this week as Cilla Black returned to Mathew Street in the form of a bronze statue.

Following the mad influx of selfies with Our Cilla on our Instagram feed, we put our heads together and came up with the Liverpool Statue Selfie Tour, made up of 15 of the best famous faces and scouse legends we could find.

Now we’re challenging you to prove your Scouse-ness by taking a selfie with as many as you can, the more inventive the better, and we’ll share the best on our social media. Details on how to share them with us at the bottom.

IPhone at the ready, here’s the list!

1 – Cilla Black, Mathew Street

Starting off nice and easy in the middle of town, head to Mathew Street for a pic in the arms of the latest addition to the tour, Cilla Black. It would be rude to not stop in for a swift pint at The Cavern and raise a glass to 60 years of legendary musical history!

2 – John Lennon, Mathew Street

Liverpool’s most famous son is waiting for his selfie opportunity just across the street, and he’s been there some time! Mathew Street has long been the centre of music tourism for the city but as The Cavern celebrates its 60th anniversary there’s no better time than now to soak up the party atmosphere and stick your arm around this legend. 3 – Red Rum Aintree

Not long until Grand National Fever hits the North West and what better way to capture your curly blow and glamorous outfit than with Aintree’s most famous four legged beauty. Red Rum, the great thoroughbred steeplechaser is cast galloping to victory at the Red Rum Gardens at Aintree and every year race-goers pay their respects at the winning post where he is buried. Proper legend!

4 – Muhammed Ali, Baltic Triangle

Not a Scouser, but a supporter of Liverpool and its magnificent people, check out Muhammed Ali. Quoted as saying “you aint no fool if you from Liverpool” legendary boxer, Ali took a permanent place in our hearts and at the Baltic Triangle. The statue, named ‘The Greatest’ can be seen on the McKeown Rice Exhibition space on Jamaica Street and is just waiting for you to put your dukes up for a selfie! 5 – Bill Shankly, Anfield

LFC fans will instantly recognise this giant of football, standing proud in front of the Kop at Anfield. Designed by Tom Murphy, the Shankly statue stands at over 8ft tall and shows him in a familiar pose, arms outstretched to applause with a fans scarf around his neck. Having been there since 1994, there wont be many fans who haven’t had a selfie with him, but another one wont hurt!

6 – Dixie Dean, Goodison Park

We can’t list a red scouse legend and not stick in a blue! Just across Stanley Park stands another footballing great in the form of Dixie Dean. The first to wear the number 9 shirt, his statue was commissioned and unveiled in 2001 shortly before he was inducted into the inaugural English Football Hall of Fame. A fan of Everton since he was 8 years old, he’ll stand forever young cheering on the blues at Goodison Park.

7 – Eleanor Rigby, Stanley Street

Easily one of the most photographed statues in Liverpool, lonely Eleanor Rigby (can you even say her name without singing it though?) sits on a bench on Stanley Street, feeding the birds, just waiting for a bit of company. Designed and unveiled by entertainer Tommy Steele and based on the title of the Lennon-McCartney song of the same name, the statue is 35 years old this year and there’s a space on that bench for you to get a close up pic with the lady herself!

8 – John and Cecil Moores, Church Street

Now we’re a bit ashamed to admit that we’ve wandered past this statue, outside Primark many times and not really known much about it. Meet John and Cecil Moores, founders of the Littlewoods Empire, who have stood in the city centre, for a second time, since 2012. A former chairman at Everton Football Club, John handed over the reins of the Littlewoods empire to his brother Cecil in the 1960’s and was said to have had a hand in Dixie Dean joining the team at Goodison.

9 – The Beatles, Pier Head

Does this statue really need any introduction? Four Liverpool lads to took the world by storm with some instruments, a whole load of swagger and one of the greatest ever writing partnerships, just happen to hail from our fair city. The Beatles stand in front of the Three Graces on our magnificent water front, unveiled in 2015 by John Lennon’s sister, Julia Baird. If you’ve not taken a selfie here, are you really scouse?

10 – Ken Dodd and Bessie Braddock, Lime Street Station

Tom Murphy had a busy year immortalising both comedy legend, Ken Dodd and former politician Bessie Braddock for an unveiling at Lime Street station back in 2009. Two Liverpool icons whose love for this city and its people know no boundaries. Earlier this year Doddy was finally awarded the knighthood he so thoroughly deserves.

11 – The Yellow Submarine, Liverpool John Lennon Airport

Once again harking back to our city’s musical heritage! If you’ve booked your summer holiday or a weekend away and you’re passing through Liverpool John Lennon Airport, you have to take a selfie with the Yellow Submarine!  Parked up (can you park a submarine?) right in front of the arrivals hall, you can hardly miss this huge yellow landmark that will put a smile on your face before check in!

12 – Queen Victoria, Derby Square

Okay so we all know Queen Victoria didn’t come from Liverpool but the vast majority of scousers know a little secret about this huge monument at Derby Square, and it’s one we just love to share with tourists and visitors to the city to watch their reaction. If you sit on the bench at the very top of James Street, just outside Neighbourhood, and look across at Queen Vic, you’ll see her in a whole new light. Tweet your selfie reactions to us @TheGuideLpool

13 – Billy Fury, Albert Dock

Busting moves down on the Albert Dock is rocker, Billy Fury. Did you know his bronze statue cost £44k and was achieved by a 6 year long fundraising campaign by his fan club, Sound of Fury! How amazing is that? Having spent more than 332 weeks on the UK charts, Billy was said (by fans) to have been the greatest rocker in the world with swinging hips that put Elvis to shame! Lets see your best Billy pose!

14 – Antony Gormley’s ‘Another Place’, Crosby Beach

Get wrapped up and hit Crosby beach with no less than 100 famous Liverpool statues for you to get snap-happy with, we’re expecting great things from this stop on the Liverpool Statue Selfie Tour. We’ve seen cute dogs, piggy-backs and various scarfs, masks and red noses on the iron men, can you do better? Standing at various points along the seafront, these faceless forms could do with a hug!

15 – Superlambanana

Last but not least, yet another yellow giant, but this time one with four legs and a banana for a tail. The original Superlambanana stands on Tithebarn Street looking like a lost…..well lamb actually. Designed by New York based Japanese artist, Taro Chiezo, this crazy replica form (created by sculptor Julian Taylor) has become part of the Liverpool tourism scene since it’s invasion in 1998.. and its staying put! Capital of Culture saw a further 125 miniature Superlambanana’s created and auctioned off to raise thousands for local charities.
