Liverpool volunteers celebrate Childline’s 30th Birthday with a big bash

Volunteers and staff at Liverpool’s Childline base are to celebrate the helpline’s 30th birthday in style, with a little help from the Wirral’s PopVox Choir and Costco!

The event, to be held at every Childline base across the UK on October 30, has been arranged by Dame Esther Rantzen as a thank you for the countless hours volunteers spend counselling children and young people over the phone or online and to celebrate the charities 30th anniversary.

Stephanie Kelly, volunteer coordinator at Childline Liverpool said: “Every day our volunteers show a huge amount of dedication and selflessness as they come in to help children through some of the most desperate points in their life.

“They will regularly talk to our callers about anything and everything that’s troubling them, whether it’s something they’ve seen on the internet, bullying in and outside of school, or some of the most serious cases of abuse and neglect. What they do for those children, being a calm and understanding ear, makes a huge difference and we wanted to do something to recognise that.

“Childline’s 30th birthday gives us the perfect opportunity to celebrate everything they do for children, and we’re thrilled that PopVox will be coming along to help us celebrate!”

Sue Stanley, volunteer Childline counsellor at the Liverpool base, said: “I feel fantastically proud of all that Childline has done in the last 30 years, and that I’m able to be a very small part of it.

“It is amazing to be able to offer hope and support to children and young people who are having a really tough time and don’t know where else to turn – nowadays more than ever, with all the issues coming from online bullying and exploitation, as well as dealing with maybe frightening situations where they live.

“I’d encourage anyone who can commit a few hours a week to apply to become a volunteer. Your help is really needed, you’ll get great training and support, and work alongside people who genuinely care and want to make a difference for children”

Emma Nowell from PopVox said: “We formed about five years now and we’re so excited to be part of such a fantastic day, celebrating 30 years of Childline! I know the whole choir is thrilled to be taking part and hopefully we can really raise the roof on the day and get everyone in the party mood.”

During the day, volunteers and staff will also be contacted by Dame Esther Rantzen who founded the charity in 1986 and they will also be treated to buffet and a cake from Costco Liverpool.
