Liverpool women’s charity WHISC celebrates its 35th anniversary this July. From its quiet, unassuming Bold Street HQ, the WHISC team and its army of volunteers provide information, training and support on women’s health issues, a listening ear and a really good cup of tea.
The chances are you’ve walked past it a hundred times while out shopping or going to or from work. But behind those doors, a 35 year mission to support and empower women has been changing lives for the better.
Having began life back in the 80’s, WHISC has grown from a mixed group of curious women who wanted better access to health information, to a team of 7 staff and more than 50 volunteers. Many of whom are previous service users who now help others during difficult times.
Alongside daily drop in sessions (Mon-Thur 10am-4pm) WHISC offers a range of emotional wellbeing and mental health support service, confidence and self -esteem outreach programmes. There’s also practical courses such as eating healthily on a budget, getting back into work or education and complementary therapies.
WHISC has seen many changes in its 35 year history. Primarily its focus was on women’s physical and sexual health but now in 2019 it’s mental health that takes precedence. In modern day life, women are pressured from many different angles. Body positivity, the work/life balance, social media pressures, relationships, it’s easy to see how it can all get too much.
Last year WHISC worked with more than 13,000 women and provided over 2.500 Listening Ear sessions. This is a no appointment necessary service for women in distress. We all know how much a cuppa and a good chat can help relieve stress and if you’ve no one to turn to, it’s one of the many ways WHISC can help.
With more financial cuts forecast in 2019, fundraising is paramount for WHISC. If you’re planning a sponsored run such as the Scouse 5k or Santa Dash, or maybe a workplace bake sale, why not support WHISC? You can also choose to support WHISC if your business operates a payroll GiftAid scheme. Head this way to find out more.
To mark the charity’s 35th year of service, WHISC is holding its annual fundraising evening at Leaf on Bold Street on Thursday 11th July from 7pm.
Royal Court Theatre and Emmerdale actress and comedian, Eithne Brown will host the evening and help to auction off some fantastic prizes. There’s also a raffle, poetry readings, stand up comedy, live music, DJ’s, live art creations and some inspiring talks.
There are some fantastic prizes on offer on the night as many Bold Street businesses have donated to the WHISC fundraiser. Tickets are just £5 each for adults and £2.50 for children.
WHISC also operates a pay it forward scheme. If you can’t attend the fundraiser but would like to purchase a ticket to pass on to someone who cannot afford it, WHISC would love to hear from you. Head this way to find out more.
