Liverpool artist John Culshaw has completed Liverpool’s new mural of LFC legend Steven Gerrard
Liverpool FC fans were given the power to choose the city’s next LFC mural to be displayed onto The Sandon Complex; the birthplace of the football club.
Sportening, a new social sports app for fans, enlisted incredibly talented Scouse artist John Culshaw to create five pieces of artwork of LFC legends that the fans could cast their vote on. These included Gerrard, Hyppia, Dudek, Paisley and Fowler.
LFC fans were invited to vote via Sportening’s app and website this month with the worthy winner painted onto The Sandon Complex; an LFC institution and the place where the club was first established in 1892.
The worthy winner was former captain and skipper Steven Gerrard who’s mural of sheer celebration has been meticulously painted onto The Sandon Complex by John Culshaw, who is famous for creating many murals across Liverpool. Gerrard scooped 28,000 votes; just over 50% of the total votes.
Gerrard, much-loved by Liverpool fans for being the iconic captain, skipper and loyal team player during his career, appearing in 710 games in total, and scoring 186 times for his local club, was given his first solo mural across the city.
Ivan Klaric, founder of Sportening, said:
“We have thoroughly enjoyed giving Liverpool FC fans the chance to vote and select their worthy winner. Liverpool’s new mural of Steven Gerrard looks fantastic on The Sandon Complex and we can’t thank John Culshaw enough for creating this incredible piece of artwork. Sportening is a social sports app that is about putting the fans first – it creates a community with like-minded individuals and we hope that LFC fans will continue to find the app and our content very useful.”
John Culshaw, the artist behind the mural, added:
“All five of the legends are worthy winners but there can only be one mural. The fans of Liverpool Football Club have spoken and Steven Gerrard is their winner! I’ve really enjoyed this process and seeing the final piece of artwork on The Sandon Complex. This mural joins many others across the city that honour some of the club’s best players.”
Kate Stewart, owner of The Sandon Pub and Complex, added:
“Steven Gerrard is an LFC icon, there’s no doubt about it. Born and bred in Liverpool and staying with the club for his entire career saw him taking part in some of the club’s most legendary moments. It’s amazing to see John’s mural on The Sandon Complex and I’m delighted that Sportening organised this and asked for us to be involved. The Sandon will always be the birthplace of LFC and it’s absolutely fitting to have a true Scouse and LFC legend such as Stevie G with us.”
