Lots of things to do in Southport despite pier closure
1 year ago
Southport is open for business! That is the message from local businesses with lots of attractions welcoming visitors and huge investment taking place this summer.
The Pier has been temporarily closed since December, but there’s still plenty of things to do in Southport for visitors to enjoy!
Southport Flower Show opens this Thursday, 17 August, and work began yesterday, Tuesday 15 August, on creating the new £73 million state-of-the-art Marine Lake Events Centre on the site of the former Southport Theatre.
Silcock Leisure Group is one of the premier tourism businesses in the busy seaside resort, employing around 80 local people and operating sites including the award-winning Silcock’s Carousel, which was built during the Victorian era and has been entertaining families for generations.
The Carousel was a finalist in the Hidden Gems category in this year’s Liverpool City Region Tourism Awards.
Visitors and local residents alike have been enjoying calling into Silcock’s Funland this summer, the family amusement centre which is open in all weathers.
Customers have also been tucking into those popular favourites, fish and chips or ice cream, from the Silcock Pier Family Restaurant.
Silcock Leisure Group owner Herbert Silcock Jr said:
“It is disappointing that The Pier is closed at the moment, but it is not something that has happened overnight.
“Sefton Council and their maintenance team of joiners were working hard so the pier could be kept open for the summer season last year.
“I have been reassured that the future of the pier is secure and it is a matter of getting the funding in place.
“Southport MP Damien Moore is also campaigning hard to get funding from a national level.
“In the meantime, we would like to reassure locals and visitors from across the UK that Southport is very much open for business!
“All of the superb attractions we have are open, including the Carousel, Funland, The Atkinson, Splash World, Southport Pleasureland, the Marine Lake, Kings Gardens, the Model Railway Village, the Little Theatre, Botanic Gardens, Vue Cinema, Bijou Cinema, Ten Pin, and so much more.
“The fantastic Southport Flower Show will be open from this Thursday! And the weather experts assure us that the weather is going to be favourable!
“This September we are looking forward to events including Southport Air Show and the British Musical Firework Championship.
“Come on down and enjoy a grand day out in Southport.
“There are so many things to enjoy in Southport. All our leisure attractions are open for business!”
