Maghull student creating 31 illustrations in 31 days for Alzheimer’s Society

Alicia McGrath of Maghull has taken up the challenge of drawing 31 illustrations for Alzheimer’s Society.

The student, who has just completed her A-Levels at Deyes Sixth Form College has raised £255 by being sponsored to complete the art works that all have a link to dementia.

Alicia was inspired to support Alzheimer’s Society after witnessing her grandma June McGrath’s dementia journey. June was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease in 2014 aged 74 and passed away aged 81.

Alicia explained: “I have decided to take part in this challenge for Alzheimer’s Society because I have always loved art and illustration, and I thought what better a way to do something I love, whilst raising money for a charity I am so supportive of.

“Dementia is a something that millions of people and families face globally, but not enough recognition is given to the illness itself, the care system or most importantly to the people who live with it. I’d like people to know that each and every person with dementia has a different experience of it, and no one’s story is the same.

“Worldwide, memories, moments and faces will eventually fade, but the one thing that dementia cannot take away from everyone is love. Love is always a beacon of hope and light, before the end of a dark tunnel.”

Art was also an important way for Alicia to connect with her Grandma as her Alzheimer’s progressed.

“Grandma became a shell of her former self, losing her laughter and smile. However, when I would visit her I would bring with me a poster, illustration or piece of art to try and get a little bit of that smile back. What amazed me was that it did, for a small moment there would be a smile, a twinkle in the eye, or even a funny face, which made my day.”

Chantelle Day Community Fundraiser for Alzheimer’s Society in Cheshire and Merseyside said:

“It is so moving to hear how art helped Alicia connect with her grandma and honour her in this special way.

“Following another difficult year for people with dementia, we are in awe of supporters like her whose brilliant fundraising efforts enable us to reach more people through our vital support services, like the Dementia Connect support line.

“People have used our services over 6 million times since the first lockdown began in March 2020, showing people need us now more than ever.”
