Major milestone achieved for Northern Docks redevlopment
55 minutes ago
Cabinet approval marks a key moment for the regeneration of Liverpool’s North Docks.
The Council’s formal agreement was a critical step in accelerating quality regeneration across the city’s northern waterfront.
The decision will see the MDC operate under a bespoke governance that ensures close collaboration between the Council and Combined Authority.
This partnership will be central to delivering sustainable development at pace, and align regeneration projects with the city’s strategic priorities to bring forward housing and commercial space to accommodate key growth sectors.
Working with the Combined Authority, City Council, national agencies and the private sector, the MDC will help drive the joint ambition for sustainable growth and ensure that community needs remain at the heart of the transformation.
The proposed development zone spans key sites along the North Docks, aiming to unlock investment, create jobs, and revitalise underused land.
By taking on new powers to coordinate development, including for accelerated planning and land assembly, the MDC will enable a streamlined and transparent approach to statutory planning decision, innovative financing tools and dedicated teams for infrastructure delivery.
The Cabinet’s decision marks a defining moment for Liverpool’s regeneration ambitions, signalling that the MDC can move forward and begin shaping the future of the North Docks.
Liverpool City Council has already identified the potential for more than 17,700 new homes and 5 million sq ft of new commercial space over the next 15 years within the North Docks area.
The MDC complements, but is separate to, the adjacent Liverpool North New Town Project – a community-focused regeneration programme aimed at creating new neighbourhoods, improving housing and local infrastructure, and revitalising communities beyond the waterfront.
