Mamma Mia! 5 reasons to see it at Liverpool Empire
3 years ago
Mamma Mia! is on at Liverpool Empire until Saturday 9 April and if you liked the film, you’ll love the show.
Mamma Mia! has bounced onto the Liverpool Empire stage with more energy than an excited puppy and a feel-good factor that’s off the scale!
The smash hit musical celebrates one of the greatest groups of all time and promises you’ll have the time of your life. It’s in Liverpool until April 9, and if you want a reason to see it – here’s five!
1. Thank you for the music
You’ve got more than 20 fantastic ABBA hits from Chiquitita to The Winner Takes It All, and Voulez-Vous to S.O.S. – and no-one’s going to need rescuing from this. It’s not often you can go to a show and sing along to all the hits, but with all the well-known classics from the Swedish supergroup you won’t be able to stop yourself.
2. Bring on the romance
And there’s bucketloads of it – in all its cheesy glory. Set on a Greek island paradise, Mamma Mia! is a story of love, friendship and identity cleverly told through the timeless songs of ABBA. Bride-to-be Sophie’s quest to discover the father she’s never known brings her mother (Donna) face to face with three men from her distant romantic past, promising a wedding they’ll never forget. It’s pure escapism (and don’t we all need a bit of that right now?!).
3. Comedy, comedy, comedy
You’ll find it hard not to smile watching Mamma Mia! But those smiles will quickly turn into laughter whether it’s at the hilarious dance routines like when Sophie’s mum and pals, Rosie and Tanya, recreate their old music act, Donna and the Dynamos, complete with hairdryer and brush as microphones, or when Tanya teaches too-eager toyboy Pepper a lesson in love; or at the side-splitting script which occasionally hovers on the edge of risqué.
4. You’ll feel like you’re on holiday
With clever lighting and whitewashed tavernas, you can almost dip your toes in the sand or feel the waves beneath your feet as you’re transported to the sun-drenched isle that’s become Donna’s home – thankfully without the need to pack a case, search for your passport or even let the thought of a COVID test enter your head.
5. It’s got the absolutely perfect finale!
Just when you think the show’s over, the music strikes back up and along with an encore of songs from the show you get a bonus of a legendary ABBA hit that we all know. Then it’s party time – hands in the air and bums off seats, as everyone – spurred on by the cast who’ve asked ‘do you want another one?’ – finds their voice and their inner Dancing Queen.
You’ll love it – and we’d put Money, Money, Money on that!
