Massive hometown shows announced for centenary year of the Liverpool Empire
4 months ago
The Liverpool Empire Theatre is 100 years old in 2025 – and the venue has big plans to celebrate throughout the year.
But March is shaping up to be what Scousers will call ‘a month and a half’ in the Liverpool Empire’s centenary year with the announcement of the return of Willy Russell’s legendary Blood Brothers and the massive news that James Graham’s powerful new and acclaimed adaptation of Alan Bleasdale’s BAFTA award-winning TV series Boys From The Blackstuff are both coming home.
Theatre Director Diane Belding says:
“2025 will be a banner year for the Liverpool Empire Theatre. We are proud and excited that these two classic Liverpool favourites will be with us next spring during our 100th birthday celebrations. Both productions are guaranteed to get the Liverpool City Region buzzing!”
Blood Brothers
Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks… only to meet again with fateful consequences. The superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True. Bill Kenwright’s production surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone.

Boys From The Blackstuff
80s Liverpool. Chrissie, Loggo, George, Dixie and Yosser are used to hard work and providing for their families. But there is no work and there is no money. What are they supposed to do? Work harder, work longer, buy cheaper, spend less? They just need a chance. Gizza job. Go on, gizzit. Life is tough but the lads can play the game. Find jobs, avoid the ‘sniffers’ and see if you can have a laugh along the way. James Graham’s powerful new adaptation of Alan Bleasdale’s BAFTA award-winning TV series is directed by Kate Wasserberg and comes back home direct from the National Theatre and the West End.
