Matilda the Musical at Liverpool Empire: Here’s what we know so far

One of the West End’s most celebrated shows is heading to Liverpool this Christmas as Matilda the Musical brings its magical mix of music, mischief and mayhem to the Liverpool Empire this December.

The Royal Shakespeare Company’s smash-hit production Matilda the Musical, based on the much-loved Roald Dahl story, will visit the city as part of a major new UK and Ireland tour – and it promises to be one of the biggest theatre highlights of the year.

What’s the shows background?

Written by Dennis Kelly with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin, Matilda has captivated over 12 million people in more than 100 cities worldwide.

Since opening in London’s West End 15 years ago, the show has racked up over 100 international awards, including 24 for Best Musical, and inspired a film adaptation which now streams on Netflix.

The story follows Matilda, a gifted young girl with a vivid imagination and a fearless sense of right and wrong, as she takes on the tyrannical Miss Trunchbull and discovers the true power of her voice.

Who is in the cast?

The cast for the tour has just been announced, with Madison Davis, Mollie Hutton, Olivia Ironmonger and Sanna Kurihara set to share the role of Matilda. They’ll be joined by a talented ensemble, including Richard Hurst as Miss Trunchbull, Tessa Kadler as Miss Honey, Adam Stafford as Mr Wormwood and Rebecca Thornhill as Mrs Wormwood.

Tim Minchin made a surprise visit to the Manchester rehearsal room this week to meet the young tour cast.

While the full list of dates for the tour will be confirmed this September, Liverpool’s festive slot makes it one of the most anticipated stops. Expect jaw-dropping choreography, stunning stagecraft, and a story that’s both heart-warming and hilariously anarchic – perfect for families looking for something special this Christmas.

Matilda the Musical runs at the Liverpool Empire Theatre from 2^nd December – 4^th January 2026.
