Merseyrail announces festive timetable to keep the city region moving over Christmas

Merseyrail has unveiled its Christmas and New Year timetable, ensuring smooth travel across the Liverpool City Region during the festive season.
With services running every day except Christmas Day, Merseyrail is making it easier than ever for residents and visitors to stay connected over the holidays.
One of the highlights of the schedule is the return of the Boxing Day service, allowing passengers to attend events, visit friends and family, or enjoy some retail therapy.
While most of the UK rail network will be closed on 26 December, Merseyrail is once again be running services and keeping the region on the move.
Merseyrail Festive Service Highlights
Christmas Eve – Tuesday 24 December
- Services will operate throughout the day, with last trains departing around 20:30.
Christmas Day – Wednesday 25 December
- No services will operate.
Boxing Day – Thursday 26 December
- A special Boxing Day service will run from approximately 09:00 to 18:00, with trains calling at selected stations across the network.
- Additional services will run between Liverpool and Aintree, supporting those attending the Boxing Day races.
New Year’s Eve – Tuesday 31 December
- Services will run as usual, with last trains departing around 20:00.
New Year’s Day – Wednesday 1 January
- A 30-minute Sunday service will operate across all lines, helping customers ease into 2024.
For other days, services will follow the standard timetable unless otherwise stated.
