Merseyrail shortlisted for international award for support of Ukrainian musicians
6 months ago
Merseyrail’s support of Ukrainian musicians during Eurovision 2023 has been shortlisted for an international charity award for its positive impact in helping the war-torn country.
The Purpose Awards EMEA recognise campaigns that use creative ideas successfully to further positive causes and acknowledge the organisations behind them. They are open to organisations throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Merseyrail supported an initiative from Ketchum PR and Supplies for Ukraine C.I.C. called ‘Sounds of the Underground’ which saw loudspeakers playing music from buskers in Kyiv who are unable to perform due to the ongoing War in Ukraine. QR codes allowed passers-by to scan and find out more about the musicians’ stories and donate to the cause. All proceeds went directly to Supplies for Ukraine C.I.C.
The campaign has been recognised by the prestigious Purpose Awards who have shortlisted it for Best Public Awareness Cause Campaign.
Sally Ralston BEM, Merseyrail’s Community Involvement Manager, said:
“We’re delighted and proud to receive international recognition for this campaign.
“During Eurovision it was so important to give Ukrainian artists the space and opportunity to showcase what they can do – after all the event would have been held in Kyiv if it had not been for the war.
“By creating the space in four city centre underground stations we were able to ensure these talented musicians could be heard by the tens of thousands of people who pass through these areas every day.
“And thanks to the generosity of our customers we also raised thousands of pounds which went directly to help people throughout Ukraine.
“International recognition of this important initiative for Merseyrail alongside our partners, Supplies for Ukraine C.I.C. and Ketchum PR, is fantastic and we’re all delighted.”
The awards final will be held in London on Friday 7 June.
