Merseyside Police launches annual Christmas campaign to protect local communities

Merseyside Police has launched its annual Christmas campaign, Operation Shepherd, aimed at preventing crime and protecting communities during the festive period.

The force-wide operation will see an increased police presence across Merseyside, with officers patrolling shopping centres, Christmas markets, and other popular festive locations to help keep the public safe. Specialist units including the Dog Section, Mounted Section, and Roads Policing will also be deployed to support the operation.

Chief Inspector Chris Bland, who is coordinating Operation Shepherd this year, said:

“Christmas should be a time of joy and celebration, but unfortunately, some criminals see it as an opportunity. That’s why Merseyside Police is continuing to tackle crime throughout Christmas and into next year, using every resource at our disposal to keep our communities safe.

“We would all like a cracking Christmas, so don’t let criminals take advantage and spoil yours. By working together and staying vigilant, we can make it harder for opportunistic criminals to succeed.”

The public will see plenty of officers from neighbourhood policing teams out at busy spots across Merseyside. Officers will be sharing useful crime prevention advice and encouraging members of the public to become a ‘Christmas Crime Cracker’ by taking simple security measures to protect their possessions, such as security marking valuable items – a proven method to deter thieves and help recover stolen property.

Merseyside Police Commissioner Emily Spurrell said:

“Christmas is a time for families to come together to make special memories. Sadly, there are those who see the festive period as an opportunity to exploit those who may be vulnerable, to take what doesn’t belong to them, and to attempt to bring misery to our communities. We are determined to not let them do that.

“That’s why Merseyside Police will be out in force, in our city and town centres and in our neighbourhoods, with increased patrols to deter those callous individuals from spoiling the festive fun, while also providing reassurance and advice for anybody who needs it. Operation Shepherd will see officers and staff working around the clock, offering crime prevention advice and high visibility activity, to make sure everyone can enjoy the season safely.

“I would ask that you help the police; stay alert, be extra vigilant and look out for one another. Above all, enjoy what should be a magical time of year for everybody across Merseyside.”

The operation will run throughout the festive period and into the New Year, with extra officers policing the vibrant night-time economies of the city and busy town centres throughout Merseyside. Officers are linked in with CCTV operators and work in partnership with local businesses, door staff, licensees and bar staff to help make sure you feel safe whilst enjoying a night out.

“Let’s crack down on crime together this festive season. You can play your part by staying alert while you’re out and taking simple steps to protect yourself and those close to you from crimes like burglary, robbery, and fraud. Whether it’s ensuring your home is secure when out shopping, being mindful of your surroundings when using cash machines, or checking that online purchases are legitimate, these small actions can make an enormous difference.

“Our officers are here to help, so please don’t hesitate to approach them for advice or to report anything suspicious.”
