Mexico Comes to Liverpool in new Queens Drive Restaurant

PULL on your poncho because a little bit of Liverpool has gone Latin!

The Mexican House is one of the newest restaurants to say hola to the city and, as well as a pinch of spice, it promises superb service fit for royalty.

Restaurant owner Mahesh Regmi has worked in some of London’s top establishments where he’s welcomed celebrities and society’s elite: “But no matter who came into any restaurant I worked in, the service was always the same – the best, and that’s what I want to bring to The Mexican House.

“I have worked in Italian, Thai, Nepalese and Indian restaurants, including the Michelin-starred Tamarind in Mayfair where the Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson was a regular visitor. As a barman then, I often served her and she was really friendly and talked to everyone. She’d sometimes bring in very famous people with her, but whoever the customer was the focus was always on giving them the best possible experience, at the table and away from it.”

Although he has co-owned restaurants before, The Mexican House Bar & Grill in Queens Drive, West Derby, is the first solo venture for Nepalese-born father of two Mahesh, 45.

And he has spent months transforming the building, formerly the King of Hearts pub and the Jalebi Indian restaurant, into a friendly place where the focus is on fabulous food and fun.

Authentic music will fill the colourful restaurant – one wall of which has been beautifully painted with themed designs by local artist Jayde Marie-Bell to reflect the cultural street art of Latin America – and customers will be invited to don ponchos and sombreros to get into the salsa spirit.

It will offer mouth-watering Mexican food from albondigas and enchiladas, nachos and burritos, chipotle chicken and chilli. There’s even a signature fajita dish with hot sizzling strips of marinated beef, chicken and prawn sautéed with mixed capsicum, onion and mushroom, served with warm tortillas, crispy salad, guacamole, sour cream and salsa.

And there are also burgers, sumptuous steaks and a host of delicious desserts such as banana and marshmallow quesadillas and chimichangas.

The menu has been created by Mexican chef Deepak Khadka, and Mahesh can’t wait to share the dishes and five-star service with diners.

“The food is outstanding, but a meal is about more than just what is on the plate,” says Mahesh. “If that’s all you want, why not just get a takeaway? It’s about the ambience of the restaurant and the experience.

“We take people’s coats, we offer magic hot towels which they create at their tables, we want to see children here – we offer them balloons and lollipops – and we want everyone, their friends and families, to have fun.”

Liverpool is far from London, where Mahesh has lived with wife Sylvia and his family for the last 25 years since studying at university, but he decided Merseyside would be a master move: “I looked at all sorts of different places but my friend Deepak is from here and encouraged me to come and see it.

“I fell in love with the area. As a businessman I could see there’s a great night-time economy here and as a restaurant host I could see that people like to be entertained, they like to go out and be treated well, and have fun. And that, we can promise them.

“Queens Drive is also a great location because it’s a main thoroughfare from one end of the city to another and en-route to the two famous football grounds, so we are hoping to welcome both Liverpool and Everton fans to eat with us before kick-off or celebrate here after the game.

“And there will be lots of match day offers. It’s a win for everyone, whether they’re Red or Blue, and I’m not bias … my daughter’s called Chelsea!”
