New sexual health clinic for young people launches in Liverpool

Young people in Liverpool and Knowsley can now access a new sexual health clinic designed specifically for their needs.

The new specialist clinic, which is for young people aged 19 and under, is provided by Axess sexual health, which is run by Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (LUHFT).

To ensure the clinic meets the needs of young people, Axess sought the opinions of youth and college groups on everything from preferred colours and names to how the clinics can be made as inclusive as possible and whether users would prefer a walk-in or appointment only service.

The weekly clinics offer contraception and testing on a walk-in and appointment basis and are located in Liverpool on Hanover Street opposite Subway, in what was previously the Armistead Centre, and at The Arch in Huyton.

Dr Martyn Wood, regional clinic lead at Axess sexual health, said:

“These new clinics are really positive developments for people in Liverpool and Knowsley. The team has worked hard to create a friendly and welcoming environment for our younger patients.”

A young person who recently attended the clinic and who wanted to remain anonymous described the experience as “very welcoming,” saying that they were able to tell clinicians “anything without feeling embarrassed” adding that the receptionist was “lovely” and “I will definitely go there again if needed.”

LUHFT was awarded a contract by Liverpool City Council to deliver an inclusive sexual and reproductive health service at the end of last year.

Axess, in partnership with Liverpool City Council’s Public Health team, was recently presented with the Transformation in Heath & Social Care award at the iESE Public Sector Transformation Awards, which celebrate innovative practice in public services.

The accolade recognises the re-design of Liverpool’s sexual health services. Since last November Axess has covered all aspects of sexual and reproductive health in the city, including face-to-face consultations, contraception advice, testing and treatment by post.

Details of the sexual health clinic, including opening times and how to book appointments, can be found at here or by calling 0300 323 1300.
