North West Cancer Research unveils its first Tree of Hope at Thornton Garden of Rest

North West Cancer Research has unveiled its very first Tree of Hope at Thornton Garden of Rest, Liverpool.

A moving tribute to loved ones lost to cancer and a beacon of hope for the future – North West Cancer Research has unveiled its very first Tree of Hope at Thornton Garden of Rest, Liverpool.

The special unveiling ceremony, held on Saturday 22nd March, saw families, supporters, and local dignitaries, including Mayor of Sefton June Burns and Councillor Peter Harvey, come together to mark this poignant moment.

Alastair Richards, CEO of North West Cancer Research, welcomed guests and spoke passionately about the charity’s mission to fund cutting-edge cancer research and raise vital awareness. He introduced the Tree of Hope as a place where families can honour loved ones by adding engraved memory leaves, creating a heartfelt and lasting tribute.

After the speeches, guests gathered outside for the official unveiling, where three families, each with deep connections to the charity, placed the very first engraved leaves – each one a tribute to a life remembered.

Tree of hope

Mayor of Sefton June Burns, who lost her husband to pancreatic cancer, shared her personal connection to the cause and praised the initiative:

“It was my honour to be part of the unveiling of the first Tree of Hope – a truly beautiful and meaningful tribute for those we’ve lost, while also helping to fund life-saving cancer research. Hopefully, one day, we’ll see a future without this devastating disease.”

Councillor Peter Harvey also highlighted the tree’s significance:

“The Tree of Hope is a special place where people can come to reflect, remember, and celebrate their loved ones. It’s been incredible to see how much this project means to the community, and we look forward to watching it grow in both hearts and leaves.”

The Tree of Hope will continue to grow as more families add their memory leaves, creating a lasting legacy that not only honours lives lost but also fuels the fight against cancer.

North West Cancer Research is the leading cancer charity for the North West and North Wales, dedicated to tackling the region’s specific cancer needs. Through funding pioneering research and improving treatment options, they’re striving for a future free from cancer.
