The British Library in London is among more than 135 libraries around the country lighting up on Wednesday 11 December, on the eve of the reopening of a Liverpool library that was torched during the racist riots in the Summer.

The arson attack on Spellow Library and Community Hub in Walton prompted a huge outcry and a nationwide response, with book donations from Her Majesty the Queen and a host of famous authors, as well as a £250,000 fundraising campaign.

To mark the reopening, the Leader of Liverpool City Council, Councillor Liam Robinson, called on local authorities across the country to be part of a nationwide symbolic moment on the evening of Wednesday 11 December.

Scores of libraries – from Lancashire and Newcastle to Southampton, Cornwall and even the Isle of Wight – have agreed to light up in solidarity and share photographs of it on their social media platforms using the hashtag #ShareTheLight.

At the same time, there will be a community-focused event for local people in Walton, part of which will be broadcast live on The One Show on BBC One.

The building is being officially reopened on the morning of Thursday 12 December at a civic event, which will include members of the local community, schoolchildren, first responders and political leaders.

There will also be contributions from poet Levi Tafari and Waterstones Children’s Laureate Frank Cottrell-Boyce. Following the event, the venue will welcome the public from 12.30pm.

Leader of Liverpool City Council, Councillor Liam Robinson, said:

“The torching of Spellow Library and Community Hub affected not just the local community, but also people across the country.

“The #ShareTheLight moment on Wednesday evening is an opportunity to show that hate will never win in our communities.

“Spellow Library and Community Hub’s rebirth is testament to the spirit not only of this City, but to the people across the country and beyond who reached out in support.

Spellow Hub

“I know that the library staff can’t wait to welcome back the local community and show them the work that has been done to restore this valuable resource.

“The reopening of Spellow Library Hub marks the start of a new beginning for Walton, which we will be saying more about in the coming weeks and months.”

Following the reopening, there will be a weekend of family Christmas events on Thursday 12, Friday 13 and Saturday 14 December, which the local community are welcome to attend.

Get ready for an unforgettable two-day event as 400 girls from 40 schools across Merseyside come together for an exciting stadium visit hosted by Everton in the Community (EitC), Everton Football Club’s official charity, as part of the ‘She Inspires’ initiative.

Funded by Merseyside’s Chief Constable and Police Commissioner, the She Inspires programme runs throughout the academic year and uses fun, motivational football sessions delivered by professional coaches from EitC and the LFC Foundation, alongside educational workshops, covering topics including healthy relationships, resilience and teamwork. It is designed to empower young girls through the power of sport, improve their confidence and help them to reach their full potential, both on and off the pitch.

The girls will be given an exclusive tour of the iconic Goodison Park stadium, exploring the players’ tunnel, the dressing rooms and walking pitch side, experiencing firsthand the excitement and history of one of England’s most storied football clubs. The girls will also take part in workshops focusing on Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG), delivered by Merseyside Police and E-STEAM team building activities using equipment from EitC’s Digital Skills Lab.

The programme continues to evolve each year and the stadium visits offer a welcome addition.

She Inspires

Chief Constable Serena Kennedy KPM said:

I am proud to work alongside partners to support positive initiatives that provide more opportunities for young people in our communities.

“She Inspires continues to open doors and inspire more young women across Merseyside. We continue to see improvements in confidence, resilience and self-esteem of the young women who have taken part, inspiring them to believe in themselves so that they can be whatever they want to be.”

Police Commissioner Emily Spurrell said:

“We already know that football is a great way to engage and inspire young people, particularly here in Merseyside and since its launch two years ago, She Inspires has been a gateway for young women to engage in sport, build confidence, improve self-esteem and grow potential.

“To be able to give 400 girls the opportunity to explore one of our two great Premier League stadiums shows how this initiative continues to evolve, as we look for new, engaging ways to reach more young women, showing them that anything is possible.

“This visit complements the offer we already have in place, whilst offering an unforgettable experience for the girls to tour Goodison Park, a ground steeped in history, and to walk the same corridors where some of the country’s greatest players have walked across the years.

“As She Inspires goes from strength to strength, I have no doubt we’ll be hearing of even more success stories in the years to come, as more women benefit from this wonderful project, setting them on a positive path to achieving their dreams.”

Anthony Harden, Senior Manager – Youth and Support, Everton in the Community said:

“We’re delighted to host an exclusive event at Goodison Park for the She Inspires programme. To engage with 400 young people from 40 schools across Merseyside over two consecutive days is testament to the quality and reach of the collaborative partnership and we’re proud to be part of such an empowering initiative. We hope the girls enjoy their experience at the stadium and learn some new skills along the way.”

1,737,036 people visited Liverpool city centre in the first week of the festive season.

With Christmas attractions open across the city – including the Christmas market, The Elf on the Shelf, winter wonderland at Royal Albert Dock Liverpool and Liverpool ONE’s festive celebrations – the city has recorded higher visitor numbers so far compared with 2023.

The 1st December saw 223,422 visit the city centre, an increase of 20.3% last year, which also saw the Santa Dash, the annual festive race of Santas in the city. This year Sunday marked the start of The Elf on the Shelf at St John’s Beacon and a performance by Batala Mersey at Williamson Square. The busiest day so far has been Friday 6th December with a 249,288 footfall, up 3.2% on the same day last year.

Storm Darragh hit Saturday 7th December, with a footfall of 188,740 but even with the storm’s impact, the first week of December is up 1.4% on 2023. Without the 7th December, it is up 8.7%.

The data comes from Liverpool BID Company, who have organised The Elf on the Shelf and fund 80% of Christmas lights in the city centre

Bill Addy is CEO of Liverpool BID Company said:

“In a modern city and visitor economy you have to give people both a reason and an excuse to celebrate the festive season. What we’re seeing in Liverpool is a recognition that people come to cities for very different things; the attraction for a family of four is not necessarily the same for a young couple. What Liverpool’s mixed use economy is very good at doing is appealing to different markets and segments and we are seeing this being reflected in footfall numbers. Spectacle and events draw people in, and that is then converted into the spend that benefits our city centre economy. The whole city centre offer is very strong in Liverpool this Christmas and we expect to see it right up to the New Year”.

You already know that Liverpool is one of the world’s most musical cities. Since the dawn of Rock’ n Roll, our region has led the way in producing chart-topping tunes.

But did you know that 10 of Liverpool’s 58 No.1 songs were top of the pile of Christmas Day?

Here’s the complete list of local artists who’ve had a festive Number One (so you can impress your family over Christmas Dinner).

The Beatles x 4

The Beatles - I Feel Fine
Credit: The Beatles

Having The Beatles on these lists feels like cheating. Aren’t we lucky the greatest band of all time came from these parts?

The Fab Four topped the Christmas charts on four occasions, with I Want To Hold Your Hand (1963), I Feel Fine (1964), Day Tripper/We Can Work it Out and Hello, Goodbye (1967).

Surprisingly, John Lennon’s solo classic Happy Xmas (War is Over) only peaked at No.2.

Mel C – Spice Girls x 3

Spice Girls - 2 Became 1

Another gem in Liverpool’s Christmas No.1 crown comes courtesy of the Spice Girl’s Mel C.

The Whiston-born, Widnes-raised songstress secured three consecutive Christmas Number 1’s with 2 Become 1 (1996), Too Much (1997) and Goodbye (1998).

All cracking songs, but the best bit of Christmas advice comes from the line, ‘Too much of something is bad enough’. Remember this as you open that second box of Heroes.

Wings – Mull of Kintyre

Credit: Wings

Living legend and long-time chart-botherer, Paul McCartney was back on top of the hit parade with Wings in 1977.

The song stayed at Number 1 until early February and became Macca’s biggest-selling single ever after shifting almost 2.1 million total units. It was so popular that it sold more copies in the UK than any Beatles song.

Not bad for a track featuring bagpipes.

The Scaffold – Lily the Pink

Raise your glass to the saviour of the human race this Christmas. Drink a drink to Lily the Pink.

Christmas Number 1 for Scouse comedy trio The Scaffold, in 1968, Lily The Pink’s lyrics celebrate the “medicinal compound” invented by the title character, which can fix all kinds of imagined illnesses.

The band Mike McGear (brother of Paul McCartney), poet Roger McGough, and comedian John Gorman were joined on the track by Elton John, Tim Rice, and Graham Nash of The Hollies.

The Justice Collective – He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother

The Justice Collective - He Ain't Heavy He's my brother

Released in 2012 to raise awareness of the Hillsborough Justice Campaign, the artist line-up for ‘He Ain’t Heavy’ was loaded with Liverpool talent, including:

Keith Mullen, Gerry Marsden, Paul Heaton, John Power, Mel C, Rebecca Ferguson, Holly Johnson, Dave McCabe, Peter Hooton, Paul McCartney, LIPA Gospel Choir, the Liverpool Phil on strings, and loads of footballers, comedians and well-known faces.

A beautiful version of a classic song for a worthwhile cause. What’s not to love?

Bonus track

Little Jimmy Osmond was Number One in 1972 with Long-haired Lover from Liverpool. (Can we claim that as well?)

Freshfields Animal Rescue is facing daily calls from people who are having to give up their beloved pets because they can’t afford to keep them.

There are currently as many as 15 pleas every single day from owners asking if they can take their dog or cat in to the Liverpool centre – not because they want to, but because they can no longer manage to pay for its food or look after it.

Staff there say it’s never been so bad.

Deb Hughes, funding and PR manager for Freshfields said:

“I would say it’s the worst year ever, certainly in my lifetime at Freshfields which is now 13 years.

“The sheer amount of calls we’re getting a day – often up to 15 – from people asking to bring in their pet to the centre, is the worst it’s been.

“Every day we have to say to people that we have no spaces is another day for the poor animal being at risk of being abandoned, or worse.

“The cost of living crisis means that when many people are finding it hard to pay bills and feed themselves, they might have to come to the dreadful decision to let their pet go.

“The sad truth is, that in a very hard financial climate, the cost of living for us is often the cost of life for them. It’s heartbreaking.”

“Our staff face so many challenges every day, and the only thing that gets us through is knowing we can make the difference between hope and despair for hundreds of animals.”

Freshfields has launched its Christmas Appeal asking for donations with the message ‘You Are The Answer’.

“We’re only here because of our supporters,” says Deb. “And when we say ‘You are the Answer’, we mean it this year more than ever.

Freshfield Animal Rescue - Kiki Before and After Treatment

“We are asking our wonderful and compassionate local communities to help us care for the abused, abandoned and vulnerable animals who have nowhere else to turn.

“We know that the public is very aware of the risks facing our animal companions:

* Veterinary bills and medication costs continue to soar

* Medicines produced in Europe have gone up by 30%, and

* 56% of UK adults say they are only one unexpected vet bill away from having to make the heartbreaking decision to surrender their beloved family pet to a rescue centre

“Families are under severe financial pressure as never before, and the animals are sadly the unfortunate victims. Those that don’t find a place in rescue end up being picked up by the animal wardens, and then are most often put to sleep.

“Vets are being asked to euthanise healthy pets when they are unwanted, or when their owners simply cannot afford to keep them.

“We need to step up and help them. Most grant funders exclude animal rescue providers from applying for assistance, the Government doesn’t fund aid for animals needing rescue services – despite record demand and rising costs we face – and irresponsible breeding is out of control with Government policies insufficient to tackle the problem.

“Every day, more and more animals find their way to our front doors, but in this financial climate people are thinking twice before taking on a pet, so we have fewer people able to adopt from us.

“With unprecedented demand it is up to us, together, to take action.”

Freshfields Animal Rescue has changed the lives of more than 100,000 animals’ lives since it first opened its doors in 1979, offering safety, warmth, love and excellent medical care; and giving them the hope of a forever loving home.

Deb continues:

“With help, we can save lives, heal broken bodies and minds, and find loving homes full of happiness for animals in desperate need. But we can only do it with people’s unwavering compassion and care.

“We’re asking people to donate what they can. Every penny really adds up and makes a big difference.”

If you want to help Freshfields Animal Rescue this Christmas you can donate online via their website by Cheque made payable to Freshfields Animal Rescue; by phone – call 0151 931 1604 for Liverpool – or by bank transfer to the below:

Everton in the Community is delighted to announce that its BEAT Breathlessness Hub has been shortlisted for two awards at the prestigious 2025 HSJ Partnership Awards, recognising an outstanding dedication to improving healthcare and effective collaboration with the NHS.

Now in their eighth year, the HSJ Partnership Awards have become the most recognised and respected mark of the strongest collaborations with the NHS.

Following the thorough judging process, EitC was included in 180+ organisations, projects and individuals that made the final shortlist amid 280+ entries submitted for the 2025 awards programme.

EitC’s BEAT Breathlessness Hub has been shortlisted for both ‘Most Effective Contribution to Improving Care for Those with Long-term Conditions’ and ‘Most Impactful Partnership in Preventative Healthcare’.

Situated within The People’s Place, the charity’s Breathlessness Hub is England’s first community-based heart and lung screening hub which provides local people with access to early diagnosis and treatment for heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and other chronic conditions.

Made possible thanks to unrestricted grant funding from AstraZeneca and delivered in partnership with University Hospitals of Liverpool Group, the hub aims to demonstrate that early detection and intervention in a community setting can significantly improve the management of long-term conditions and overall patient outcomes. This proactive approach has enabled EitC to identify these conditions at an earlier stage when interventions can be more effective and less costly, alleviating pressure on the region’s public health services and saving the NHS approximately £110,000 to date.

The Peoples Place - Everton in the Community

The BEAT Breathlessness Hub is delivered in Liverpool 4, which is one of the most socially deprived wards in the UK, meaning that local residents are much more likely to develop a long-term condition due to prevalent health inequalities in the area. Since its launch in May 2024, EitC has screened 1,200 individuals and of those, 42 potential heart failure cases were detected, 28 were identified with atrial fibrillation and 420 had poorly controlled blood pressure.

Lucy McLean, Health Screening Coordinator at Everton in the Community said:

“We are delighted to be shortlisted for at the HSJ Partnership Awards 2025. It’s testament to our hardworking team at The People’s Place and all our key partners who have helped to make the BEAT Breathlessness Hub a success.

“The HSJ awards programme is a high profile and hugely respected platform to showcase the work and achievements of the many healthcare professionals who enter, and so we’re delighted to have been recognised on this prestigious shortlist for two 2025 HSJ Partnership Awards. We look forward to the awards ceremony in the New Year.”

EitC would also like to place on record its thanks to Pumping Marvellous, Edge Hill University, Us2.AI, Lumira-Dx, National Service for Health Improvement and Health Innovation North West Coast for their collaborative efforts in helping the charity to deliver the BEAT Breathlessness Hub.

To find out more about the hub, please email peoplesplace@evertonfc.com.

The selected winners will be announced during the awards ceremony at Evolution London on Friday 20 March 2025.

Merseyside Police’s Bromborough police station goes up for sale today (Tuesday 10th December).

Built in the 1930’s, this station has served the force for more than 90 years and comprises the main police station, as well as two traditional detached houses which were used as offices. The 2.09-acre site is positioned in a prominent location close to Bromborough town centre with direct links across Wirral, including the Birkenhead tunnel and M53 motorway.

The sale is part of the Police and Crime Commissioner’s 12-year Estate Strategy focused on modernising and updating Merseyside Police’s stations and buildings to ensure officers and staff are in the right places and best equipped to serve communities across the region.

The strategy focusses on putting more money into frontline policing by selling old, out-dated and inefficient buildings and replacing them with more cost-effective, flexible and fit-for-purpose facilities.

A key part of the plan is to open a brand-new visible and accessible police hub in the Wirral. Due to be completed within the next five years, the new development is set to reduce the force’s annual running costs and selling Bromborough police station will help generate the money to deliver this state-of-the art new police base.

Merseyside’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Emily Spurrell said:

“By selling this site, which is no longer fit for purpose, we will generate money which will be used to continue to transform the police estate, making sure our stations are fit to serve our officers and staff, so they are fit to fight crime now and into the future.

“We’re taking the right steps to ensure the buildings we occupy right across Merseyside are in the best possible position to serve our communities.

“While Bromborough police station is no longer fit to serve the force, it is a prime residential site and has real potential to be a valuable development for local people.”

Bromborough is one of 11 old stations due to be sold during the 12-year plan. It comes after Canning Place went on the market earlier this year with the deadline for bidding closing in October. More than £21.6m is expected to be recouped from selling these stations.

Renowned singer and entertainer Gareth Gates is set to captivate audiences with his latest show, Gareth Gates Sings Love Songs from the Movies, coming to the Floral Pavilion on Friday 21 March 2025.

This one-night-only performance, self-produced by Gareth himself, will take you on a heartfelt journey through some of the most iconic love songs ever featured in cinema.

From the timeless “Unchained Melody” to the sizzling up tempo hits of “Dirty Dancing”, Gareth Gates reinterprets these beloved classics, offering a fresh and emotional experience.

Each song is carefully chosen to transport the audience into the unforgettable love stories that have shaped generations.

With the support of a dynamic live band, West End singers, and stunning visuals, this show promises an evening brimming with emotion, nostalgia, and the magic of the movies.

It’s an experience designed to touch the heart and ignite a romantic spark in everyone who attends.

At 40, Gareth Gates continues to inspire with his talent and tenacity. Recently, he wowed audiences with his resilience on “SAS: Who Dares Wins Celebrity” in November 2023, showcasing both his physical and mental strength.

His openness about the severe bullying he endured due to his stammer added a profound layer to his victory, resonating deeply with viewers.

In an exciting new direction, Gareth is also making his mark in musical theatre writing. He is currently developing a new musical, slated to debut in 2025, which explores the challenges faced by a young man with a stammer—a deeply personal project for Gareth. This upcoming musical has already attracted the attention of a leading West End producer, creating significant buzz in the industry.

In addition to his theatrical projects, Gareth has just signed a major new record deal, marking a pivotal moment in his music career. He is currently in the studio working on a new album set for release later in 2025.

This album is expected to showcase Gareth’s evolving artistry, blending his classic sound with modern influences. Fans and critics alike eagerly anticipate this project, which promises to solidify Gareth’s status as one of the UK’s most versatile and enduring musical talents.

Gareth expressed his excitement about the upcoming concert: “Bringing this show to the Floral Pavilion is a dream come true. Music is my life, and I’m looking forward to sharing this special night with my fans.”

A sports equipment recycling scheme will help break barriers to sports for Wirral residents while reducing waste.

Launched by Wirral Council’s Active Wirral Leisure service, Kit Link will offer residents the chance to recycle and reuse new and used sports equipment and clothing.

Sports kit and equipment can be donated at collection points across the borough, with all donations redistributed to adults and children across Wirral who are not able to access sports and physical activity due to the cost of clothing and equipment.

Cllr Ann Ainsworth, Vice-Chair of Tourism, Communities, Culture and Leisure committee for Wirral Council, said:

“Many residents will know what it’s like to have an old pair of trainers, exercise clothes or sometimes sport equipment gathering dust at home. What if instead of sending it to landfill, your old kit could be someone else’s fresh start?

“If you’re having a clear out, why not donate your seldom-used items to someone who will cherish them as you once did.

“Recycling old sports kit and equipment will not only have a tremendous impact on the environment, but it will also enable young people and adults to enter new sports they may previously have struggled to access.”

Wirral Recycling
Credit: Active Wirral

How does it work?

  1. Donate: Collection points are available in all leisure centres, golf courses and Wirral Watersports Centre.
  1. Reuse: All donations are checked over and then allocated to groups or individuals who will use the goods to access sport and physical activity
  1. Be Active: Hundreds of Wirral residents can then enjoy a new sport or physical activity due to the donations of clothing and equipment

Donating via Kit Link will help increase the lifespan of sports clothing and equipment, reducing the need to purchase brand new goods. It also helps divert waste from landfill.

What items are accepted? Items donated to Kit Link could include:

Additional items may be accepted providing they are sports/fitness related.

Items which are unusable, undesirable, unhygienic or unsafe should not be donated. These items include (but are not limited to); gum shields, swimwear, trainer socks, sweatbands, towels, chalk. Martial arts items, ice skates, shooting equipment, heavy weights (over 3kg) and extremely worn kit should also not be donated.

Kit Link collection points are now available in all Active Wirral leisure centres, golf courses and Wirral Watersports Centre.

Bus passengers in Merseyside are about to benefit from more than 50 new buses on the roads.

Leading bus operator Arriva has invested in new vehicles, which will bring a range of benefits to customers.

The new fleet of 56 single-deck low-emission micro-hybrid buses are about to be rolled out across the region.

Arriva has invested £14 million in the vehicles, which will boost the bus network and operate across the entire Liverpool City Region Combined Authority area.

The new vehicles will be deployed in the iconic new livery that is being introduced by the Liverpool City Region as part of its ambition to create a London-style integrated transport system that is easy to use and recognise for all passengers.

Area director for Arriva Merseyside Richard Hoare said:

“I am thrilled to announce this transformation to our fleet in Merseyside, which will enable us to carry on our work in boosting the sustainable and efficient transport system across the region.

“We take our responsibility of improving our bus network seriously. Having a comfortable, viable, attractive alternative to travelling by car is key in reducing congestion on our roads and carbon emissions.

“The most important consideration is our customers – they deserve to rely on our buses to get them to the people and places that matter to them and that’s why having newer, better buses is really beneficial for them.”

New Mersey buses Foulkes and Richard

Cllr Steve Foulkes, chair of the transport committee at Liverpool City Region Combined Authority said:

“It’s great to see these brand-new vehicles which will soon be operating on routes across our city region, including on the new X4 express bus service linking Runcorn and Widnes with Liverpool city centre.

“The new buses’ design and colour scheme, as well as their Metro branding, mirror the livery that will feature on the more than 100 new electric buses being purchased by the Combined Authority as well as the design of the city region’s £500m fleet of new publicly owned trains.

“The plan is for this new yellow, black and grey livery to be introduced across the network over the coming years, as plans to deliver an integrated London-style transport system for the city region move forward.”

Disabled Liverpool musician Joshua Henderson has secured a deal with HMV Liverpool to stock his debut album for Disability History Month.

Joshua Henderson, who is a learning-disabled artist, officially launched his debut album Songs of Liverpool for Friends with a special performance at the Bluecoat in June of this year to coincide with this year’s Learning Disability Awareness Week.

Upon release of the album Josh was hoping to reach a target of 500 streams of his album online but has smashed this target receiving over 2,500 streams of his songs in less than 6 months. Now, to kick off Disability History Month, Josh is again receiving recognition for his work by having music giants HMV agree to stock CDs of his album at a local store.

The album of original songs was recorded at the city’s The Cabin studio with the support of innovative Liverpool disability arts organisation DaDa and with the assistance of a grant from the Youth Music, using public funding from the National Lottery through Arts Council England. The Youth Music Next Gen Funds aim to help young creatives across the UK realise their dreams.

Josh first became involved with DaDa through the DaDa Young Ensemble project more than a decade ago, which works with young disabled musicians to compose and perform original music. The organisation has continued to work with Josh to nurture his talent, and source the funding to produce his debut album.

‘Songs of Liverpool for Friends’ is a love letter from Josh to the city he grew up in and features artwork created by Josh with support from Blue Room of his favourite Liverpool Landmarks.

The former Redbridge High School and Notre Dame Catholic College student, from Walton village, started playing the guitar at the age of nine, inspired by his musical dad. All the songs on the album have been written and arranged by Josh who performs vocals, electric guitar and piano.

The singer-songwriter is joined on the album by Mollie Parkinson on bass and Tyler Sherwood on drums who have also come through the DaDa Young Ensemble Project, with additional vocals, piano and keyboards from producer Jon Hering, with fellow producer David Kelly providing vocals and rhythm guitar. The track Capital of Culture 08 features a special performance by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra’s Georgina Aasgaard.

Josh speaking passionately about his inspiration behind his album explained:

“Liverpool is my home city. Liverpool is my favourite place. It’s where I do my art and I like the buildings, they make me calm. I like to go down on a sunny day and get on the ferry; I love feeling the breeze and looking over at the city.”

Josh Henderson Launch - HMV

Liz Henderson, Josh’s mum told us the whole family are delighted with Josh’s album success saying:

“Josh is absolutely thrilled about his CD going in HMV and looking forward to meeting people. I am incredibly happy and pleased for him, he is very excited about it all.”

Executive Producer at DaDa Rachel Rogers said:

“It has been a privilege for the DaDa team to work with Joshua Henderson and see his development across the last decade. We are thrilled for Josh that HMV are now stocking his CD’s off the back of his successful launch.

Josh is an incredibly talented and credible artist, and his success shows just how powerful funding grassroots disabled music projects can be in beginning to nurture artists to grow and develop.

DaDa celebrates 40 years of supporting disabled artists this year, promoting ‘Equity and Excellence in the Cultural landscape’. We work to provide artists with opportunities to try, develop and become successful in their own right.

Josh is a determined and hard-working young man, and this album really showcases his passion and ability to write and produce quality music. Through our ensemble project and the investment from Youth Music, Josh has been able to develop and become the artist he is today.”

We’ve seen loads of star-studded shows and stunning performances at the Liverpool Empire, but one of the most dazzling theatrical productions so far is heading to Lime Street this week.

Disney’s Aladdin is on from this Wednesday, December 11 until Sunday, January 5, and if you’ve not already flown to the box office to book your tickets, here’s 6 reasons why you need to see it.

Classic Disney

The show’s based on the 1992 Disney classic film starring the legendary Robin Williams and tells the familiar story of street urchin Aladdin who finds a magic lamp with a larger-than-life genie who helps change his life forever.  It’s got all the ingredients of a great tale, with lots of humour, drama and of course – spoiler alert – a happy ever after.

You’ll be made up with the magic

With a genie at the core of the storyline you’d expect a bit of magic, but it’s jam-packed with spectacular illusions that’ll leave you in awe. Every time the genie comes on stage there are some superb surprises, and don’t forget the iconic carpet ride scene where Aladdin and Princess Jasmine actually look like they’re taking flight. Quick costume changes, and plenty of smoke and flashes of light, and this really is magic!

Award-winning music

You can sing along! As well as new music like Proud of Your Boy and High Adventure, it features all the award-winning smash-hit songs by Alan Menken, Howard Ashman and Tim Rice like Friend Like Me, A Whole New World, One Jump Ahead, Prince Ali, and Arabian Nights.

@theguideliverpool

The cast of Aladdin hopped a magic carpet to Liverpool ahead of their show @Liverpool Empire 🧞‍♂️ We chat to Aladdin, Princess Jasmine and The Genie to find out why they can’t wait to perform in Liverpool this festive season. Dazzling sets

Get ready to embrace a whole new world with stunning scenery that’s as glittery as it’s colourful, especially in the royal palace and cave scenes. Nothing is simple with Disney, and in this superb stage show it’s evident the designers have gone into overdrive with the finest details to create a feast for the eyes as well as the ears.

Sparkling costumes

Imagine a whole series of Strictly packed into one show and you might get an idea of how many sequins, gems and jewels are involved in the Aladdin costumes that’ll leave you simply dazzled. The wardrobe staff must need to wear sunglasses.

Family fun

With an easy-to-follow storyline, lots of laughs and even some slapstick humour, this is one for all the family to enjoy which is always a winner at this time of year. There’s fantastic choreography and a fabulous cast and, while this light-hearted show doesn’t take itself too seriously, entertaining the audience is very much the aim of the game.  And it wins hands down!

Liverpool’s indie powerhouse Circa Waves have dropped new single ‘Like You Did Before’ – taken from their forthcoming new album Death & Love Pt.1 – out January 31st, 2025 via Lower Third/[PIAS].

The track follows the album’s supreme first offering ‘We Made It’, followed by the topical ‘American Dream’, and channels the 2000s New York scene, serving up a nice big slab of Strokes-y dancefloor destruction. Listen to ‘Like You Did Before’ HERE & watch the video HERE.

Frontman Kieran Shudall says:

“This song is a reminder of a moment in my life that many people don’t know about. Just before my heart operation lying in hospital when life felt uncertain and fragile, I would imagine myself in a packed sweaty indie club, dancing like my life depended on it. It was a daydream, a form of escape and this song fits perfectly into that vision.”

Circa Waves will return to the road in February & March next year, embarking on their biggest UK headline tour yet, playing to their ever-expanding fanbase. Across 12 dates, they’ll play to thousands of fans across the UK, including a night at London’s O2 Academy Brixton on March 26th and what will be a truly special, final night hometown show at Liverpool’s Olympia March 1st.

Both terrifying and liberating to write, Death & Love Pt.1 is an urgent, 9-track hit of cathartic guitar-pop, serving as a powerful coping mechanism to help process frontman Kieran Shudall’snear-death experience.

Back in early 2023, Kieran received a call from doctors to say that the main artery in his heart was severely blocked. Two days later, he was lying on an operating table watching a wire being inserted into his heart to fix it. What followed was the cancelling of a lot of shows, working out a lot of medication, and most crucially, now having to navigate a new way of life.

And the results are quite simply stunning. Self-produced by Kieran, and engineered by Matt Wiggins (Adele, Lana Del Rey, Glass Animals), the nine tracks that make up Death & Love Pt.1 ooze nostalgia, and hark back to the sounds and themes that made Shudall want to pick up a guitar in the very first place.

Circa Waves was formed in Liverpool in May 2013 by Kieran Shudall. After writing a batch of songs and putting some demos online, he recruited second guitarist Joe Falconer, bassist Sam Rourke, and drummer Sian Plummer (replaced by Colin Jones in 2015).

The band first gained a buzz and earned favourable comparisons to the Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, and the Vaccines before they hit the Top Ten with their debut, 2015’s Young Chasers. Buoyed by singles like ‘T-Shirt Weather’ and ‘Stuck in My Teeth’, the album reached the Top Ten of the U.K. albums chart and paved the way for a series of well-attended live shows, including a sold-out date at London’s O2 .

Without shying away from their influences, the band matured, and albums like 2017’s Different Creatures, 2019’s What’s It Like Over There? showcase their knack for crafting their own distinctively infectious, post-punk anthems. In 2020, they reached number four on the U.K. albums chart with Sad Happy and returned in 2023 with Never Going Under.

Death & Love Pt.1 is the first instalment of a snapshot in time – a reflection on a moment of true terror, and the joy of coming through the other side. It’s a brave and remarkable next step for a band in the finest form of their career.
