The Merseyside Derby, originally scheduled for 12.30pm today (Saturday, December 7), has been postponed.

The decision to postpone the Merseyside Derby followed a meeting of the Safety Advisory Group at Goodison Park this morning, which included representatives from both clubs, Merseyside Police, and Liverpool City Council.

Concerns about safety in the local area due to strong wind gusts and an amber severe wind warning, in effect until 6am on Sunday, led to the postponement being agreed on safety grounds.

In a joint statement, the clubs apologised for the inconvenience caused, while acknowledging the importance of prioritising the safety of fans, staff, and players.

They thanked supporters for their understanding, acknowledging the disappointment this decision will bring to both sets of fans.

The statement read:

“Following a Safety Advisory Group meeting at Goodison Park, attended by officials from both clubs, as well as representatives from Merseyside Police and Liverpool City Council this morning, it was decided that, due to the risk to safety in the local area due to strong wind gusts, and an amber severe wind warning that remains in place until 6am on Sunday, today’s fixture should be postponed on safety grounds.

“We apologise for the inconvenience caused and thank supporters for their understanding. Whilst we appreciate this will be deeply disappointing for supporters, the safety of fans, staff and players is of paramount importance.

“Information relating to a rearranged date for the fixture will be announced in due course.

“All tickets purchased for the original fixture will remain valid for the rearranged fixture.”

Your ultimate guide to Christmas in Liverpool 2024 HERE.

Whether you’re a once-a-week walker, somewhere who’s at the gym every day, or in between, this time of year is always the toughest for sticking to a fitness routine.

The usual plans get ditched and then there’s all the extra food and drink to deal with – so how can you stop the festive season messing up the good work from the rest of the year?

Nic Santangeli, head coach in strength and conditioning at Liverpool’s Elev8 gym, says there’s no point in setting targets and expectations that aren’t achievable.

The way to tackle it is by being realistic and going for little wins between now and mid-January.

Nic from Maghull spent 13 years in the Army from school, joining as an engineer before specialising in physical development. When he left the military two years ago he decided to take that concept and develop it for athletes, businesses, mums, dads, and everyone in between.

“It’s something that can adapt to everyone, so it can be tailored from a woman in her 50s coming in who might wanting to lose weight to young lads who are professional fighters.

“What I do is strength and conditioning specific to the individual so it’s about helping someone progress and at the same time protecting their output in life. If a mum is working and has got three kids, she’s got to have the energy to do all of that so for her the training might be a lot less intense than a 21-year-old male who wants to train 100 hours a week.”

At the Elev8 gym on Vulcan Street near Costco, Nic has been coaching clients through a six-week plan of intensified training to allow a step-back over Christmas. But he says it’s not too late for everyone to still get themselves prepared.

“There are little achievable tips you can still do – just because it’s Christmas doesn’t mean you need to completely stop on food, nutrition, exercise, steps, things like that.”

Here are Nic’s little wins to keep your fitness on track over Christmas …

Credit: Elev8
Credit: Elev8

High protein choices when eating out

During Christmas, staying on track with your fitness goals while eating out can be challenging, but it’s possible with some smart choices.  If you have multiple meals out planned then you could go for a high protein option, for example dishes like roast chicken, turkey or steak, which are common on Christmas menus. This way you’re saving calories that can go on a starter, dessert or your favourite drink.

Keep steps & activity levels high

Staying active over Christmas can be a fun way to maintain your fitness goals while enjoying the season. Make an effort to keep your step count up by taking post-meal walks with family/friends or explore winter activities such as the Christmas markets. Consider setting a daily step target, such as 10,000 steps. Incorporating short, brisk walks or light activity throughout the day helps offset the indulgent holiday meals and keeps your metabolism active, supporting overall fitness. Don’t underestimate the power of walking. This can be a huge positive when it comes to maintaining your progress over the Christmas period.

Be kind to yourself when looking at the scales

During the Christmas season, it’s important to be kind to yourself when looking at the scales. Weight fluctuations are completely normal due to changes in diet, hydration, and activity levels. Temporary weight gain from indulgent meals or extra treats is often water retention or bloating, which will quickly stabilise once the holiday period ends and routines return to normal.

Avoid being hard on yourself, as this can lead to stress or unhealthy habits. Focus on overall health and well-being rather than immediate numbers. With consistency and patience, your body will naturally return to your baseline as the festivities wind down.

Stick to your training routine where possible

Loosely sticking to your routine over the Christmas period can help you stay on track with your fitness goals, even during the holiday chaos. While it’s normal to have a busier schedule, try to maintain consistency by fitting in shorter workouts or adjusting the timing. For example, if you normally train 3-4 x per week, adjust this to 1-2 x per week.

Whether it’s a quick morning session, a lunchtime walk or even 20–30 minutes home workout, this can make a big difference. Sticking to something, no matter how small, is better than completely stopping. This will put you in a much better place when you return to normality in January.

A groundbreaking initiative to equip children and young people for the high-tech jobs of tomorrow is set to expand, thanks to a £1.13m investment from the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority.

The funding will enable Knowledge Quarter Liverpool (KQ Liverpool) to extend its KQ Futures Programme over the next five years, inspiring students and addressing skills shortages in the region’s burgeoning life sciences and innovation sectors.

The LCR Innovation Zone Programme is expected to create 8,000 new jobs and attract up to £800m investment to the Liverpool City Region over the next 10 years.

KQ Futures aims to inspire students from primary school up to 18 years old and help them to benefit from the high-paid jobs the Innovation Zone will bring.

It will raise aspirations and help tackle a skills shortage in the life sciences sector, removing barriers to future roles in innovative industries and creating new paid internships and workplace experiences in science and technology.

Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Region said:

“Our economy is being revolutionised by innovation – particularly in sectors like health and life sciences, which is why it’s an incredibly exciting time to be in the Liverpool City Region.

“We’re standing at the forefront of a transformative period where innovation and sustainability converge, and we want to inspire the next generation of innovators and leaders to be part of that challenge.

“By expanding this programme, we’re not only tackling skills shortages, but ensuring that every young person – regardless of background – can access these high-skilled, high-paid roles.”

KQ Futures Programme is one of 20 projects being developed in the first phase of the city region’s 10-year, £160m Life Sciences Innovation Zone.

The new investment will scale up Knowledge Quarter Liverpool’s existing skills and outreach activity to reach students across the city region.

Students will learn about the types of innovation happening in the region and the potential career pathways into sectors such as health and life sciences, advanced manufacturing and digital and creative.

Previous outreach work includes a Careers Insight Week, which welcomed more than 250 students from Year 7 to Sixth Form, in collaboration with LCR Careers Hub.

As part of the expansion, an animated children’s book, The Animates: Learning in Liverpool, will be rolled out across all city region primary schools, accompanied by lessons to introduce the concept of innovation.

Andrew Lewis, chair of KQ Liverpool, said:

“Enhancing skills will be fundamental to the Liverpool City Region’s long-term success, and we want to ensure access to innovation opportunities is as inclusive as possible.

“By connecting local students to the innovations taking place in KQ Liverpool and across the city region, we can equip them to secure a wide range of well-paid local jobs.

“We have already welcomed hundreds of local young people to KQ Liverpool and we are delighted to now have the opportunity to scale up those efforts and deliver a series of new activities which inspire a new generation.”

The Knowledge Quarter Liverpool (“KQ Liverpool”) Innovation District is a partnership bringing together the University of Liverpool, Liverpool John Moores University, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, Liverpool City Council, the Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Bruntwood SciTech.

The Liverpool City Region Life Sciences Innovation Zone Programme (LCR Innovation Zone Programme) is part of the Government’s national Investment Zone Programme.

It’s got a reputation for being one of the best pantos in the north west – and the Theatre Royal in St Helens has smashed it again with this year’s Panto

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is on at St Helens Theatre Royal now until 12 January 2025.

Director and theatre manager Chantelle Nolan is delighted with the amazing reviews already coming in just days after it launched.

“I’m thrilled with the show,” says Chantelle.  “I don’t know how we do it but every year, like people are saying, it just gets better and better.  And that’s our aim.

“Snow White is a very traditional panto with a real story to tell that kids know, and we tell it in a fresh way and with all those elements of surprise and magic.”

Chantelle adds: “I love listening to people as they go out of the theatre, and everything has been positive so far.”

And if that doesn’t convince you to get your seat booked, these seven reasons to see it definitely will.

Dame dynamite

Richard Aucott is back as the dame and his character Nurse Nelly prescribes a shed load of laughs with a cracking delivery of double entendre – a must in any panto – and he rocks the most amazing costumes.

Pop royalty

Nolan sister Maureen is the Wicked Queen and while she might not get you in the mood for dancing with her dastardly performance as the panto baddie, she’ll definitely get you booing and hissing. Maureen’s a member of the legendary Nolans girl group who took the UK by storm long before the Spice Girls were even Wannabes and she’s appeared on stage with everyone from Frank Sinatra to Motorhead.

Dwarfs are giants of charity

The seven dwarfs are voiced by a collection of local legends: Johnny Vegas, Pete Price, Joel Ross, Philip Regan (Queen of Scottie Road), Craig Philips, Louise Emerick and John May, who have all donated their fees to their chosen charities including The Honey Rose Foundation, Zoe’s Place, The Rotunda, and Clatterbridge Cancer Charity.

Musical magic

You’ll be tapping your feet and clapping your hands from the moment the cast bursts on stage, opening with a medley of lively numbers like Walking on Sunshine, Good Day Sunshine, and Don’t Blame It On The Boogie. Add a bit of Taylor Swift – Love Story – and more along the way and you can’t go wrong, especially when the stars bring everything to life with great high-energy dance routines.

Corrie cracker

Actor, singer, dancer and film-maker Emrhys Cooper pays the foppish Prince Frederick who sings a superb duet of Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars’ Die with a Smile with Snow White (played beautifully by Chantelle Morgan).  Emrhys, who plays cult leader Rowan Cunliffe in Coronation Street, performs a cracking version of Queen’s Somebody to Love with some incredible dance moves.  Chantelle admits: “He’s everything you want in a panto prince to be. He’s over the top, he’s got a cheeky grin, he can sing and he’s an amazing dancer – and he’s so handsome!”

Comedy gold

Like all pantos it’s jam-packed with topical gags – there’s even a nod to Baby Reindeer – but if anything is going to have you doubled up in your seat it’s Lewis Devine’s performance as Muddles. As always madcap Muddles has the audience eating out of his hand with an energetic, slapstick performance and comic-timing par excellence. Supercharged and always electric.

Fab costumes and scenery

You can always expect fabulously colourful costumes and more sparkle than the Strictly glitter-ball, but this year the Theatre Royal has excelled itself with new costumes and stunning scenery that’ll transport you right to the very heart of pantoland.

With stunning effects, adorable pooches from canine performers Doggie Delights, a dazzling appearance from Leanne Campbell who returns in digital form as the Magic Mirror, and so much more, this is one Panto you cannot miss.

The Peaceful Hour, a brand-new play by acclaimed local playwright Gerry Linford, is coming to Liverpool’s Royal Court from 14 February to 8 March 2025.

Directed by Emma Bird, The Peaceful Hour promises a mix of heartfelt storytelling, Scouse wit, and a journey back to the heyday of night-time radio.

The confirmed cast is Ellie Clayton, Julie Glover, Michael Hawkins, Angela Simms, Jack Whittle and Lenny Wood.

The Peaceful Hour, hosted by Pete Price, was must-listen night owl radio, running from 10pm – 2am on Radio City for four decades. Scousers would ring in with requests, letters and problems. The iconic show is the backdrop for the new play running in real time on the stage.

Kirkby, 1985. When it comes to relationships, Julie has had more misses than hits. She just wants someone to love and someone who loves her. To go on long walks through Kirkby Market together, look at the stars from the site of the recently demolished ski slope and lie in bed listening to the dulcet tones of Pete Price on The Peaceful Hour.

Tim is an anthropology student from the Cotswolds and has always dreamed of embedding himself in a culture so he can walk amongst the locals, observing and learning from their behaviour. Kirkby is his version of Gorillas In The Mist. But with trackies.

As their eyes met across the dancefloor in the Kirkby Suite, Julie knew that she wanted to take Tim home. He’s soon wrapped up in the realities of her bonkers family and he’s getting more than he bargained for. It’s far from peaceful.

Gerry Linford (Haunted Scouse, Yellow Breck Road) has written a brand new show about true love, real life and cheesy love songs.

Join them for one night in the life of a young couple whose destiny is guided by the stars. They just want to find what love means. Do you know what I mean, love?

You can book tickets to The Peaceful Hour here.

Liverpool City Council is set to simplify its Council Tax Support Scheme, making it easier for working-age residents on low incomes to manage their Council Tax bills.

Council Tax Support provides discounts to help households reduce their Council Tax burden.

With around a third of Liverpool households currently receiving this benefit, the Council is proposing the first major review of the scheme since its introduction in 2013.

Following a consultation, one of four options is being recommended to be taken forward.

The changes being proposed would see the introduction of a banded scheme, designed to ensure the scheme supports those on the lowest incomes, which enables residents to budget, is easy to understand, provides incentives for people moving into work.

The aim is also to future proof it in terms of its cost, as it costs the Council £73 million a year, and affects the amount of Council Tax that can be raised.

Households would get a 12-month award so they know how much their Council Tax bill will be reduced by over a year, enabling them to budget. The proposed changes will also align with Universal Credit and provide some certainty for people moving into or out of work, whilst continuing to provide support to those that need it most.

The upper and lower limits in net earning bands would be extended by £50 per week, while for households with children they will be extended by £25 per child, per week.

Liverpool Skyline
Liverpool Skyline

The maximum percentage of Council Tax discounted would change from 91.5 per cent to 84 per cent, and awards capped at the level of a Band B property. There would also be a maximum period that an award can be backdated.

The new-look scheme, if approved, is designed to be financially sustainable, and could reduce expenditure on the scheme by around £5.2 million, but would still be one of the most generous among the big ‘core’ cities.

The proposal would not affect the Council Tax Support Scheme for pensioner households, the rules for which are controlled by central Government.

The recommendation will initially be considered by the Cabinet on 10 December, and then has to go before Full Council on 22 January for approval.

Deputy Council Leader and Cabinet Member for Finance and Resources, Cllr Ruth Bennett, said:

“We are hugely proud of the range of support we offer to the most vulnerable residents in Liverpool and take our responsibility extremely seriously.

“However, we need to make sure that the Council Tax Support Scheme is affordable and sustainable in the long-term.

“The changes make the scheme simpler to understand, and also provide households with a level of certainty by enabling them to know how much they will receive over a 12-month period, which will also reduce our administration costs.

“Our Council Tax Support Scheme will remain one of the most generous among the big cities and within the Liverpool City Region.”]

Sefton Council has just unveiled a stunning new video showing how the Strand could look in the future.

In the 2½ minute, CGI fly-through, viewers are taken through and around the Strand’s remodelled and new indoor and outdoor spaces, including the planned new town square, green spaces and community areas.

They will experience the improved connection between the shopping centre, Salt and Tar site and the canalside and the new, lighter atmosphere indoors and out thanks to the glass roof covering part of the area. And they can see how the site will be fully accessible by wheelchairs and pushchairs, and easy to use by people with impaired mobility.

The video will also be available on the Strand website and also on the screen in the window of 159 Parkside (the former Love Coffee) which is going to be the new information hub for the Transformation Project.

Sefton Council submitted a planning application for the next stage of work in the transformation of Bootle town centre  at the end of October. The plans submitted were shaped by responses to the Council’s recent consultation from people who live in, work in, and visit Bootle. They also include ways to reduce carbon use as much as possible and detail sustainability targets in line with Sefton Council’s Net Zero ambitions.

Cllr Paulette Lappin, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Economy and Skills, said:

“When we consulted local people on our visionary plans, an overwhelming majority of respondents supported them and now, thanks to this new video they can see it for themselves.

“We are excited about our ambitious plans for Bootle and this new CGI fly-through gives people a real sense of how it will look and feel to visit our exciting vision for Bootle Town Centre.”

Sefton Council CGI - Bootle Strand

Sefton Council bought the Strand in 2017, before receiving £20 million of Government funding to make significant improvements to the shopping centre. In September, hoardings went up inside the centre to allow for preparatory work to take place ahead of next year’s partial demolition, which is due to start in the spring.

Cllr Lappin added:

“The Strand will remain open to the public during all works and the aim is to minimise disruption to businesses and customers during this period.

“So, keep visiting the Centre and support all the businesses that are based there!”

To stay up to date with all work taking place, people can visit the Sefton Council website.

A three-year old boy from Wallasey is getting ready to celebrate his first Christmas in remission from cancer.

Bailey Kilbane has just finished more than two years of treatment after being diagnosed with b-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

After ringing the bell last month, mum Bethani says the family is now looking forward to a fantastic Christmas knowing that Bailey has beaten his horrible illness.

She says: “I’m so excited.

“He has spent the last two Christmases in hospital so we can’t wait to all celebrate this Christmas at home together.”

Bethani, 25, adds: “Bailey has asked Father Christmas for a bike and an ice-cream van.

“And while he’ll think those are the best presents ever, mine is knowing that my little boy is well again.  Nothing can get better than that for me.”

Everything seemed fine until he was nine months old when Bethani, a former dog handler in a doggie hotel, noticed that Bailey didn’t seem himself. He was bruising easily and was unusually pale and lethargic.

She and partner Brandon, 25, became even more concerned when he started to experience night sweats and had a high temperature.

Bethani says: “It was initially thought that he had a viral infection, but further blood tests revealed suspected leukaemia. Bailey was immediately transferred to Alder Hey where he had a bone marrow aspiration and lumbar puncture, and he was diagnosed with b-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

“I wasn’t sure what it was at first or what it meant.

“You never think these things are going to happen to you.”

Bethani and Brandon soon learned that B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (B-ALL) is a fast-growing type of blood cancer that occurs when the bone marrow produces too many abnormal white blood cells called B-lymphoblasts.

Because of the aggressive nature of leukaemia, Bailey’s medical team at Alder Hey quickly started chemotherapy.

Dr Kat Lindsay, Bailey’s Haematology Consultant, explains: “Bailey’s leukaemia chemotherapy involved three stages. The first aims to destroy the cancer cells and put it in remission, the second phase aims to destroy any remaining cancer cells, and the third phase aims to reduce the chances of the cancer returning.”

Bailey’s treatment spanned more than two years, starting with intravenous therapy and injections during the first two phases, followed by oral medication at home in the final phase.

The treatment was challenging and often left Bailey physically unwell.  Bethani, who now has a 10-week-old daughter Brooke too, says: “You wonder if you’re ever going to get through it.

Bailey Kilbane Christmas 2022 going through treatment.

“The worse time was when Bailey’s treatment was intensified, and he was really poorly.  That was when we wondered if we would ever celebrate another birthday or Christmas with him.  It was hard.

“Last Christmas he had tests at Alder Hey on Christmas Eve before we were sent home. But then they called us on Christmas Day to say he needed to go back in, so we spent Christmas in hospital again.

“Bailey opened all his presents there.

“It will be lovely to be able to celebrate at home this year and we are so grateful.  We met so many other families during his treatment at Alder Hey and some of those no longer have their little ones. We know we are so lucky.”

Bailey received the incredible news that he was in remission on October 27, and on November 5 he proudly rang the end-of-treatment bell.

To celebrate, Bailey’s family threw a huge party with friends and loved ones, marking not only his remission but also his third birthday (and all the ones before which he’d missed because he’d been so unwell).

Even his nursery, Little Lodge Daycare, joined in the celebrations, holding a teddy bears’ picnic and bell ringing of their own.

Bethani smiles: “When were told Bailey had leukaemia we couldn’t believe it. It was a huge shock and our life was put on hold, but the staff on 3B have all been amazing. They have watched Bailey grow from a baby to the little boy he is now. They adore him, which made us easier to trust in them and the process.

“It’s been a long road to get here but Bailey is the happiest little boy, and you wouldn’t think he’s been through so much. We’re forever grateful to Alder Hey for where we are now.

“It means that this Christmas is extra special.  We have got the decorations up and lights outside – and Bailey has even got his own Christmas tree up in his bedroom!

“It’s special because it’s the first Christmas Bailey has been aware of everything and, of course, because he is in remission.

“We’re looking forward to spending Christmas Day at home with close family, watching Bailey open his presents, and playing games.

“It feels like the first Christmas we can properly enjoy as a family. After fears at times that we’d never have another Christmas with Bailey again it means so much… and it’s amazing that, thanks to Alder Hey, this will be the first of lots of lovely Christmases we’ll be able to celebrate together.”

Celebrated Liverpool band The Zutons are thrilled to share their cover version of Amy Winehouse’s ‘Back to Black’. This new take on the soulful classic brings a unique twist to a track that has left an indelible mark on music history.

The connection between The Zutons and Amy Winehouse runs deep, with the late artist’s rendition of their hit song ‘Valerie’ becoming a global phenomenon. Winehouse’s version, produced by Mark Ronson, elevated ‘Valerie’ to new heights, becoming a modern classic and cementing its place as one of the most celebrated covers of all time.

This release of ‘Back to Black’ comes full circle for The Zutons. It originated during a special Live Lounge performance honouring Amy Winehouse’s cover of ‘Valerie,’ which was recently voted the greatest Live Lounge performance of all time. As part of the tribute, The Zutons were invited to perform their own ‘Valerie’ alongside a Winehouse song. Their stirring rendition of ‘Back to Black’ captivated listeners and received such an overwhelmingly positive response that the band decided to record and officially release the track.

“We’ve always been proud of how Amy made ‘Valerie’ her own, and to have the opportunity to honour her in this way feels really special,” said The Zutons. “This version of ‘Back to Black’ has taken on a life of its own, and we’re excited to share it with everyone.”

The release comes as The Zutons continue a busy season, currently on tour with Paul Heaton and gearing up for their own headline tour in April 2025. With new music in the works, fans can expect even more from the band in the coming months.

The Zutons will be on a UK headline tour through April 2025.

2024 has been a triumphant year for The Zutons as they returned with their first album together in more than 16 years. Produced by Nile Rodgers alongside the band’s original producer Ian Broudie, The Big Decider arrived to widespread acclaim and landed in the UK albums chart Top 10. Acclaimed live shows followed as the band performed headline shows up and down the country, played to a packed Other Stage at Glastonbury and are currently on a sold-out arena tour with Paul Heaton.

A heartwarming new video inspired by the iconic movie ‘Home Alone 2: Lost In New York’ has been created to encourage people to enjoy all that Southport has to offer this Christmas.

The footage has been modelled on the scene where Kevin McCallister realises he is in New York and has lost his family, and then embarks on a wondrous journey discovering the delights of the Big Apple. It has been filmed and directed by Your Southport Marketing Manager Bertie Cunningham, from Southport BID, to give the town a boost during the festive season.

The video premiered on the Your Southport social media platforms and has been an instant hit with viewers, attracting tens of thousands of views. The star of the short film is an 11-year-old local boy Paddy O’Callaghan, a pupil at Farnborough Road Junior School.

Bertie Cunningham said:

“I got the idea while watching Home Alone 2: Lost In New York. It’s a brilliant movie.

“There is a magical scene where Kevin arrives at the airport in New York and is horrified when he realises he has lost his family, who have all flown to Florida.

“Then his reaction turns to joy when he gets in a cab, travels over the Brooklyn Bridge and goes on to explore New York, a city he loves

“From a child’s perspective, going on such a big adventure, it’s really exciting.

“I wanted to recreate that sense of wonder by filming Paddy travelling in a taxi over the Marine Way Bridge, before admiring local scenes in Southport including Silcock’s Funland, Southport Market, the giant illuminated Bear and Reindeer, and then finishing at Harry’s Sky Bar at The Grand, looking out across Lord Street, with a sweeping drone shot showing off Southport at its best.

“We sourced the best clothes to match Kevin’s character, and found an identical camera to go with it.

“Volunteers from the local crochet group, the Southport Hookers, designed and made his hat.

“Paddy is a big fan of Home Alone, and was excited to do some acting for us.

“We want to encourage people from everywhere to come out and enjoy Christmas shopping in Southport, stay in local hotels and guest houses, share a meal at one of our local restaurants or visit some of the local attractions.

“There is a lot happening for people to enjoy in Southport this Christmas and we hope people enjoy this video.”

“Keep your Eyes Open to county lines exploitation” – that’s the message from Merseyside Police as it continues to target drug gangs who profit from the exploitation of children and the vulnerable.

During County Lines Intensification Week (25 November – 1 December), Merseyside Police made 132 arrests, seized more than 6,800 wraps and 4.8kg of Class A and B drugs and identified and safeguarded 153 people at risk of exploitation.

County lines is the name given to drug dealing where gangs and organised criminal networks use phone lines to move and supply drugs, usually from cities into smaller towns and rural areas.

Merseyside Police
£15k of cash seized during a search

Young people and the vulnerable are frequently targeted, exploiting them into trafficking drugs, money and weapons. Once the child is dependent on the gang, they are coerced into criminal activities, often with threats of violence and blackmail. Families and loved ones of the child are also threatened.

Merseyside’s dedicated county lines team, Project Medusa, is pivotal in intercepting this exploitation and bringing the exploiters to justice.

During the week of action, officers from Project Medusa, local policing and Matrix worked with partners and other forces from across the UK to dismantle and disrupt criminal gangs, resulting in:

Merseyside Police
A large bag of suspected heroin seized in Blackpool

Activity included warrants, safeguarding visits to vulnerable people and joint operations with West Mercia and Lancashire Police.

Plain clothes officers, drugs dogs and knife arches were just some of the tactics used to proactively disrupt the supply of drugs on the railway and bus networks throughout Liverpool city centre.

The ongoing work of this dedicated team is not only impacting county lines within Merseyside, but also in other parts of the UK.

In a joint operation with Lancashire Police, the County Lines Taskforce deployed to Blackpool alongside officers from Project ADDER (Addiction, Diversion, Disruption, Enforcement and Recovery) and drug and alcohol support services Renaissance and Horizon Blackpool. The aim was to identify vulnerable people involved in county lines and provide bespoke support to end the cycle of reoffending and drug addiction.

Seven men and a woman aged between 20 and 61 were arrested on suspicion of a range of offences, including possession with intent to supply cocaine, heroin and crack cocaine. The team also made several referrals to Horizon, which offer drug and alcohol support for people on their journey to recovery.

Merseyside Police
Drugs recovered in Lpool City Centre

Detectives continue to work tirelessly to compile covert intelligence and disrupt those involved in county lines – resulting in 13 drug lines being identified and closed during the week alone.

Seven warrants were executed across Merseyside in relation to ongoing investigations into county lines drug supply and the exploitation of vulnerable people.

During warrants in Croxteth and Norris Green, officers recovered mobile phones, a machete, an air rifle and a knuckleduster along with large sums of cash and designer watches. Two men, aged 28 and 37, were arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of drugs and possession of an offensive weapon.

During a day of action in St Helens, a warrant was executed which resulted in the arrest of a 26-year-old-man on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of crack cocaine and heroin. The man was found in possession of a suspected ‘graft phone’. Three suspected XL bully dogs were also seized from the property.

Officers worked shoulder to shoulder with social workers, local safeguarding partners and leading child exploitation charities to safeguard 153 people at risk of being exploited by gangs.

Officers also visited several Merseyside addresses to gather intelligence, disrupt dealers and safeguard vulnerable people from cuckooing. Cuckooing is where criminal gangs use threats of violence or abuse to take over the homes of vulnerable people to deal drugs and commit other serious crimes.

Merseyside Police
Suspected cocaine seized in Blackpool

Inspector Stephen Morris said:

“Our involvement in this national week of action is just a snapshot of the work we do all year round. The results, which include 132 arrests, a significant amount of drugs seized, and 13 drug lines closed, are testament to the effective joint working between forces and partners.

“Tackling county lines is a priority for Merseyside Police. We continue to work tirelessly to pursue and prosecute those who peddle drugs in Merseyside, commit violence and exploit vulnerable members of our communities.

“The arrests and seizures made should act as a stark warning to county lines offenders – you will be caught and be put before the courts.”

The week of action comes as Merseyside Police recently launched Eyes Open, a campaign to raise awareness about the growing issue of child criminal exploitation and county lines.

The campaign highlights the predatory nature of gangs and how they groom children through a sense of belonging and ‘free’ gifts like designer clothes, vapes or expensive bikes – trapping them in a cycle of debt.

Initially, these ‘free’ gifts may seem harmless – new clothes, gadgets, or money. But there’s always a catch. Young people, parents and carers are encouraged to keep their #EyesOpen to spot the signs of child criminal exploitation and to report any concerns or incidents they witness.

During the week, the Eyes Open campaign was delivered to schools and care homes, to help young people recognise the signs of exploitation.

A range of diversionary activities also took place as part of Project Medusa’s prevention arm, Operation Stonehaven. These were led by Tranmere Rovers in the Community, Activate Body and Mind, Think Fast St Helens, Nobody Left Behind, Shrewsbury House, Reform Education and AP Coaching and Mentoring.

Merseyside Police - The Guide Liverpool - Safer Action Business

Senior Investigating Officer for Project Medusa, Jimmy Belmar, said:

“Through Project Medusa, we are pursuing more criminals than ever who exploit vulnerable people, while also protecting the victims of exploitation.

“Reports from the public continue to help us execute warrants, make arrests and close criminals’ county lines operations, that cause so much harm to our communities.

“Therefore, we would encourage the public to keep their Eyes Open to exploitation through county lines, come forward with any information and to report any concerns or incidents they witness.”

Support and how to report

You can report any concerns to police on 999 if a crime is in progress, via 101, or our social media desk via X @MerPolCC.

The Liverpool restaurant serving one of the city’s favourite Sunday roasts has created a Christmas Day version for fans to cook at home.

La Bistroteca in Baltic Market has become known for its incredible roasts since chef Livia Alarcon launched there in 2023.

They sell out pretty much every week and the signature sides have really helped them stand out from the crowd.

After 18 months of growing popularity, Livia decided to come up with Bistro Bites, her Christmas present to everyone who loves her dishes.

She’s making up big gift boxes, all wrapped in ribbon and filledwith all their sought-after trimmings. They’ll be mostly part-cooked and ready to heat up on the big day, so it’s perfect for anyone who gets stressed out by all the prep and timing headaches that go into making Christmas dinner.

They’re made for 2, 4, 6 or 8 people and have smoked garlic pigs in blankets, confit garlic & thyme roasties, smoked garlic glazed carrots, and a mix of cabbage and sprouts which Livia has put her own twist on.

“We’ve elevated it by putting in some Manchego cheese, toasted almonds and honey,” she explains. “It’s something I used to cook in my first job at Salt House Tapas and it’s just such an amazing sprout dish.

“I know sprouts are something people either love or hate but when you get the sweetness with the tang of the Manchego and the nuttiness of the almonds it’s just boss.

“We’ve also got our truffled cauliflower cheese which everyone loves, pigs in blankets with smoked garlic honey, a pouch of our homemade gravy jus, cranberry sauce, bread sauce, and carrot puree which everyone seems to go crazy for.

“The contents inside are basically all the big hitters that we do on our Sunday roast,”

Bistro Bites boxes also come with the option to add meats like a capon instead of turkey or chateaubriand that serves 2-3.

Livia, who’s a former head chef at Maray, says the idea came from her mum, who’s in charge of cooking Christmas dinner at home.

“She came in for a roast and said it was amazing so she suggested I offered it at Christmas time. At first I wasn’t sure if people would be interested but the roasts have gone really well so I thought why not try it?

“Honestly the response we’ve had has been phenomenal, I’ve been so pleasantly surprised and really thrilled by the fact so many people have chosen to put their trust in us.

“Obviously Christmas Day is massive, it’s an important day for people, so I love the fact that we can take the pressure off and deliver something that’s restaurant quality all in a time frame of 30-45 minutes at home.

“The regular boxes with signature sides just need re-heating really so you avoid that daunting task of getting everything cooked on time.

“Carrots will be blanched, so they just need reheating and glazing, the cauli cheese will be trayed up ready to go, roasties will be par-cooked, pigs in blankets sealed, and the gravy and sauces are ready to heat.”

The Bistro Bites boxes are ordered through a link in La Bistroteca’s bio on socials and the website.  Livia will be at Baltic Market bright and early on Christmas Eve getting them all packed up, so they can be collected from there between 12pm and 4pm.
