Jennifer Hynes is currently on stage at Royal Court Liverpool starring in Lost Soul 2.

Her first major role at Liverpool’s Royal Court, she was discovered through Open Audition and is just one of the performers from Liverpool city region who have won major roles after answering the call.

In the past year, Princess Khumalo appeared in The Independent Socialist Republic Of The Upper End Of The Lower Breck Road by Lawrence Quilty, Reiss Barber starred in Netherley Hill Billies by Barbara Phillips and Jennifer Hynes in Lost Soul 2 by Dave Kirby. Each first met the crew at the Royal Court through Open Audition.

“I’ve been working as a vocalist in Liverpool and going to the Royal Court has always been a goal of mine”, says Jennifer. “Being able to tell Scouse stories, finding content that’s relatable, I’ve always wanted to perform at the theatre and my family has always gone to shows there”.

“I found out about the Open Auditions on social media in April and got a slot. They rang me to check my availability in June and I got a recall. I had no idea I’d get this far this quickly.”

The Open Auditions were announced in January in 2024 and were designed for the Royal Court to have an understanding of the talent in the region that they perhaps didn’t know about. They were designed to create a bank of actors aged 18 and over from anywhere in the region to cast in future productions.

The theatre has seven or eight shows all produced in-house for the main stage each year, plus lots in The Studio, and has plenty of great roles on offer, and wants to make sure it finds exactly the right person for each one.

Harvey Robinson is Assistant Producer at Liverpool’s Royal Court looking after Talent Development.

“The Open Auditions have been really successful in introducing new or emerging talent in the whole region. We have seen performers on the main stage, The Studio and also Stage Write, our regular night which sees developing work performed by a cast of actors.

“It’s vital for us as a theatre, and a theatre that produces new work, that we have a constant supply of new talent who can help us tell the incredible stories that come to us.”

For Jennifer, her starring run in Lost Soul 2 is a fantastic experience so far.

“I’m having the best time. Everyone is looking after me and answering questions. Bob (Eaton) and Dave (Kirby) have been really supportive and incredible with the character. It’s been great to work with an experienced cast. Lindzi Germain (who also stars in Lost Soul 2) is so hard working and it’s amazing having people like her in the cast. We laugh but we work hard so it’s a lovely atmosphere to be part of.”

Now you see me is a striking blown glass and mixed media piece displayed alongside the artwork that inspired it The Card Party by Gawen Hamilton (1698-1737).

Day’s installation was catalysed by his discovery of ‘The Card Party’ among the gallery’s collection, in which a small Black servant is hidden within the scene.

Through his work, Day sheds light on this child’s story and the experiences of others who have been silenced. The artist’s signature ‘copper cages’ encase blown glass pieces, creating a quasi-reflective surface where viewers can observe an image that is present, yet not quite there – mirroring the essence of the boy in the painting.

Chris Day describes himself as mixed race and often explores his identity through his artworks.

His diverse heritage led him to research themes linked to the trade in enslaved African people and its legacies. Day’s works seek to engage the audience on difficult issues, using art to overcome the traumas that haunt our collective past. The beauty of his work invites closer inspection, creating a striking contrast with his powerful message.

Day rediscovered his passion for art after working as a heating engineer for twenty years. He graduated from Wolverhampton University in 2021 with an MA in Design and Applied Art, where he studied ceramics and glass. His trade as a plumber informs his artistic practice, and he incorporates found materials used in the heating industry into his work.

Now you see me is presented by the Contemporary Arts Society, a charity that has been instrumental in enriching UK museums with contemporary art and craft since 1910. The display is presented through the Griffin Award, which is designed specifically to support acquisitions of craft works, including mediums such as glass.

Chris Day said:

“My passion lies in making work that sparks reflection on the transatlantic slave trade. I am delighted to have the chance to create a commission that will start a conversation in Liverpool, so deeply rooted in that trade.

“I am proud that my work will be part of the Walker’s collections and eager to see the reactions and discussions it may provoke.”

Nicola Scott, Curator of Decorative Art at National Museums Liverpool, said:

“I am delighted that Chris Day has created this new commission for the Walker, presented by the Contemporary Art Society through the Griffin Award.  It is an exciting opportunity to acquire an artwork by one of the UK’s leading glass makers.

“Chris is an innovative glass artist with an international reputation making work with a message. Now you see me, is directly linked to the Walker’s collections and Liverpool’s history. The intriguing beauty of these sculptures invites closer inspection and contrasts with Day’s powerful message about the city’s involvement in the transatlantic slave trade.”

Christine Takengy, The Roden Senior Curator of Museums Acquisitions at the Contemporary Art Society, said:

“We are thrilled to be commissioning this series of glass sculptures by Chris Day as part of the Griffin Award. Day’s work is both poignant and timely, reflecting on Liverpool’s role in Britain during the transatlantic slave trade and bringing to light the concealed histories of the many enslaved people that passed through its port. CAS is happy that this commission supports the Walker’s commitment to decolonialising their collection.”

Now you see me is now open and runs until 24 November 2024 and is free entry with donations welcome.

Usually found traveling the globe, local artist Cal Medforth, better known as Caspian Grey, is bringing his talent back to his roots in Merseyside.

Cal Medforth, a 30-year-old muralist and painter from Formby, has left his artistic mark from Asia to America, but now, he’s set on sharing his skills with the local community through new commissions and murals.

Cal’s journey as an artist began early, studying art and design at the City of Liverpool College before graduating from Liverpool John Moores University with a degree in graphic design and illustration. But his passion for murals started even before that, at just 17-years-old.

“I never thought I’d end up traveling the world,” Cal said. “It all started by chance. I was a delivery driver and would draw between deliveries, which caught my boss’s attention. His friend was opening a restaurant in Formby and asked me to create a mural. That’s how it all began.”

Unsure of his direction after university, Cal decided to test his talents abroad, leading him to paint murals across America, Europe, Southeast Asia, and India, including commissions for private clients, local councils, and businesses.

Of all the places he’s painted, Cal holds India close to his heart. “There’s nowhere else like it,” he says. His favourite mural, however, is an interactive piece in Thailand, showing a giant phone where visitors can pose with it. “It’s my favorite because I had complete freedom to just go crazy,” he explains.

Known for his detailed portraits, depictions of Greek gods, and other figurative designs, Cal is open to a wide range of projects. Each mural is crafted uniquely for its space, and he loves collaborating with clients to make their vision come to life. “I’m very open to ideas. Every mural has its own purpose,” he says.

His works vary in size and complexity, with some taking days and others, like the Shenanigans mural in Liverpool, taking up to three weeks to complete. For Cal, the larger the canvas, the better. “I love doing public pieces and seeing people’s reactions. There’s so much more impact,” he shares.

In addition to murals, Cal creates canvases and works in various other mediums. His latest canvas, painted in India, is now available for purchase, offering art lovers the chance to own a piece of his vibrant world.

Returning to Merseyside, Cal aims to bring culture and vibrancy to local businesses, homes, and public spaces in Southport and surrounding areas.

He hopes to collaborate with local agents and galleries to showcase his work and dreams of brightening up businesses and homes with his unique style.

“If people aren’t fully sure what they want, that’s okay. I’m always up for a chat to explore ideas and see what we can create together,” Cal said.

Ian Prowse, Philharmonic Music Room July 2023

Invisible Wind Factory in Liverpool is set to host a moving event dedicated to raising awareness about mental health and suicide prevention.

Organised by dancer and mental health advocate Laura Macy, in association with the Samaritans of Liverpool and Merseyside, ‘Speak Up’ is a powerful video project aimed at changing the language around suicide and preventing further loss.

The project is dedicated to the memory of Djaro Benjamin Gobets, a well known member of the community of those involved in the project, who died by suicide.

The event will showcase a screening of the video project, which has been created to raise awareness and encourage open conversations about mental health. The project, a collaborative effort involving dancers, mental health advocates and creative artists, aims to shed light on the subject of suicide through the healing power of movement and music. Listeners from the Samaritans of Liverpool and Merseyside will be present to offer support and information throughout the event.

Rachel Howley, development manager for Samaritans Liverpool and Merseyside, said:

“We are proud to be hosting this inspiring event encouraging people to speak up about their mental health. Our callers often tell us how much better they feel after talking about what is on their minds, but we are all too aware how difficult some people can find opening up about the things that are troubling them.

“That is why the message of speaking up is so important. At Samaritans, our trained listeners are on hand to speak to anyone who is going through a difficult time, and callers can talk to us in confidence and without judgement. We are always here.”

In addition to the video premiere, the evening will feature live performances from the Liverpool Indie Choir, talented local soloists David Alexander, and Meg Hulse.

The event will feature a headline performance by acclaimed singer Martha Goddard, a passionate advocate of mental health support. The performances, each chosen to reflect the theme of hope and resilience, will offer attendees an opportunity to reflect, connect, and find comfort in shared experiences.

“Projects like this have the power to break down barriers and challenge the stigmas that silence conversations around mental health,” said Laura Macy, the event’s host and a passionate advocate for suicide prevention. “With ‘Speak Up,’ we’re using the universal language of movement and music to reach out, create understanding, and encourage openness. It’s about changing the way we talk about suicide and, ultimately, saving lives.”

This premiere is not just a tribute to Djaro Benjamin Gobets but also a call to action, urging the community to come together in support of those struggling with mental health challenges. Join us for an evening of remembrance, music, and hope, as we honour the lives lost to suicide and strive to create a brighter future.

‘Speak Up’ will premiere at Invisible Wind Factory on 10 September 2024 at 7.30pm. Tickets are £12.50.

It was Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze who had us all swooning (and sobbing) at the cinemas in 1990, but now it’s time to fall back in love once more with the incredible stage version of a classic.

Smash hit Ghost The Musical is at the Liverpool Empire all this week, recreating the amazing magic of the movie.

And if you’ve not got your tickets yet, here’s 5 reasons why you need to book them fast!

Chance to see local legend Les Dennis

Comedian, presenter, and now-in-demand actor Les Dennis is starring in Ghost this Friday and Saturday (September 6 and 7) only, so it’s a chance to catch the popular Scouser while you can. Les, who trod the cobbles as Gail’s husband, Michael Rodwell, in one of Corrie’s most gripping storylines, wowed audiences recently when he played Malvolio in Twelfth Night at the Shakespeare North Playhouse and he’s receiving amazing reviews for Ghost too, playing two roles, Hospital Ghost and Lionel Ferguson.

It’s one of the most famous stage and screen love stories

And who doesn’t love one of those?! Walking back to their apartment late one night, a tragic encounter sees Sam murdered and his girlfriend Molly left devastated and alone. With the help of a psychic Sam, who is trapped between this world and the next, tries to communicate with Molly to save her from grave danger… It’s a classic romance with a supernatural twist – and peppered with drama, mystery, and loads of great comedy.

Superb soundtrack

Most of us have hungered for the return of Ghost the Musical, if only to hear its epic soundtrack. The Righteous Brothers’ famous Unchained Melody is synonymous with this other-worldly love story, but it’s not the only one that’ll have you reaching for the tissues. With You and Nothing Stops Another Day, two beautiful and heart-wrenching songs co-written by Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart, will do the trick too.

THAT iconic scene

There’s no escaping that infamous scene as artist Molly throws the clay and goes to create her latest piece on her potter’s wheel only to feel the touch of her soulmate Sam once again, as he wraps his arms around her. Let’s face it, it’s totally romantic (and a little bit raunchy) and it had us all racing to the nearest ceramics studio to sign up for pottery lessons.

Stunning sets

Amazing sets transport you to New York to make you feel like you’re really in the middle of the story, whether it’s outside with the well-known Brooklyn Bridge landmark in the background, on the subway, or in Sam and Molly’s spacious loft-style apartment.

Ghost the Musical is at the Empire Theatre, Liverpool, from now until Saturday, September 7.

James’ Place offers free, life-saving treatment to men in suicidal crisis at their Liverpool centre in the Georgian Quarter, as well as at centres in London and Newcastle and has helped over 2,300 men across the country to date.

Men who receive therapy at James’ Place are in suicidal crisis largely driven by life events, such as a relationship breakdown, financial problems, or bereavement. They are experiencing intense and distressing suicidal thoughts and have often made a plan to end their life, or already made a suicide attempt.

Andy Noon, Head of Centre at James’ Place Liverpool said:

“We want to let men in Liverpool and the North West know that if you’ve made a plan to end your life, have made a recent suicide attempt, or are experiencing intense and distressing suicidal thoughts, reach out to us and we can help you make a different plan.

It may seem overwhelming to reach out and tell someone what is going on, but please rest assured that many people have felt how you feel now and have come through their crisis. What you are feeling at the moment won’t always hold this much power over your life and you can overcome these feelings with the right help.

If you are worried about someone else, don’t be afraid to ask them if they have made a plan to end their life. You won’t put the idea in their head. If they say yes, you can look for help for them on our website jamesplace.org.uk/plan, call 111, contact the Samaritans on 116 123, or take them to A&E or your nearest walk-in centre.”

Men in suicidal crisis can contact James’ Place themselves or be referred to the centre by a professional including those working in health and community services, or by a friend or family member.

The centre has no waiting list and will typically see men for an initial assessment within two working days. Following assessment, men receive around six to eight face-to-face sessions of talking therapy with a trained professional therapist in a safe, friendly, non-clinical environment. James’ Place works alongside the NHS and other local support services, taking on clinical responsibility for the men they treat.

44 year Matt, who received help from James’ Place said:

“I was in a really dark place at the beginning of the year, I just felt I couldn’t live through another year and I started to think about taking my own life. I knew I needed some help and when I googled James’ Place popped up so I filled in the form and they got back to me almost straight away and I was booked in for an appointment. The centre was really calm and nice. My therapist was lovely, it felt like she was really responding to exactly what I said. I felt heard. Over the weeks the thoughts started to subside and I felt stronger and more able to carry on. We started to work on things that could keep me well in the future, I’ve taken up mindfulness, I’ve started writing again, there’s lots of little things I do now that keep me grounded and make a difference, they stop my thoughts running away again. Going to James’ Place has been an amazing experience for me.”

The centre is open Monday-Friday 9.30-5.30 by appointment only. Access support from James’ Place, make a referral or find out more here.

Amazon has launched an AI-powered shopping assistant – named Rufus – in the UK for the first time.

The new chatbot, which is initially being launched to a subset of customers in Amazon’s mobile app, has been trained on Amazon’s product catalogue and information from across the web to enable it to answer any shopping queries users have.

The US tech giant said Rufus can help shoppers with broad research questions such as “What do I need for making smoothies?” to comparisons between different types of products and even specific questions about individual items.

Rufus was first introduced in the US earlier this year, and is the latest in a ever-growing list of examples where tech firms have looked to build generative AI tools into their services as a way to entice customers.

Generative AI has become the focal point for innovation in the tech sector since the launch of ChatGPT nearly two years ago.

While many firms, including Amazon, have used other forms of artificial intelligence and machine learning to power their products and services for years, the ability of generative AI to create responses and even content from scratch is seen a major step forward.

Rufus can answer a range of queries from shoppers about specific products, or broader topics (Amazon/PA)

“Amazon has been using AI very expansively for over 25 years to improve customer experiences,” Amazon said in a blog post about the launch of Rufus.

“The personalised recommendations customers get when they shop on Amazon’s store, the pick-paths in our fulfilment centres, and the conversational capabilities of Alexa are just a few examples of experiences fuelled by AI.

“And we believe generative AI is going to change virtually all customer experiences that we know.

“We are excited about the potential of generative AI and will continue testing new features to make it even easier to find and discover, research and buy products on Amazon’s store.

“We look forward to progressively rolling Rufus out to additional customers in the coming weeks.”

Once available, Rufus will appear as an icon in the bottom corner of the screen within the Amazon Shopping app, with users able to expand the chat box to see answers to their questions, as well as tap on suggested questions and ask follow-up questions.

Amazon confirmed users will be able to return to traditional search results at any time by swiping down to close the chat box.

Small business owners across Merseyside are being encouraged to sign up for a free, groundbreaking cyber security training scheme as demand for places continues to surge.

The Merseyside Cyber Security Programme has already seen hundreds of businesses benefiting from essential guidance to protect against the rising tide of cybercrime.

In the past year alone, thousands of business owners across our region have been left counting the cost of online fraud and cyber-attacks, many of which could have been prevented if a few extra steps had been taken to protect their organisations online.

Figures from Action Fraud showed there were 7,182 reports of fraud or cyber-attacks in Merseyside with reported losses of £28.6m over the last year.

Using money and assets seized from criminals through the Proceeds of Crime Act, the Merseyside Cyber Security Programme is funded by Merseyside’s Police and Crime Commissioner Emily Spurrell and Chief Constable Serena Kennedy.

Utilising the specialist knowledge of the North West Cyber Resilience Centre (NWCRC), the initiative was launched last August, offering 300 businesses access to a wealth of guidance and free training to increase their knowledge around online safety.

The programme is designed to help business owners to tackle the growing threat posed by cyber-attacks from phishing or malware attacks, making it more difficult for them to be targeted by fraudsters and reducing the number of potential victims.

Due to popular demand, spaces on the course are now limited, with less than a sixth of those 300 places remaining, meaning anyone wishing to book their place is advised to do so as soon as possible or risk missing out.

Merseyside Police and Crime Commissioner Emily Spurrell said:

“Prevention is key when it comes to tackling the growing threat of cybercrime.

“For business owners, the knowledge and skills our free cyber security training gives them has the power to protect their organisations, so I’m delighted so many have already signed up for a place.

“We want to make sure every one of the 300 spaces on this course is used, so I would urge any owners of small or medium sized businesses who haven’t yet secured their space to get in touch.

“Any one of us can be a potential victim of cybercrime. That’s why it’s vitally important we do all that we can to provide education and guidance to business owners, empowering them to keep themselves, their businesses, their employees and their customers safe online.

“We are funding this course using money recovered from criminals, protecting those who may be vulnerable, lessening the devastating impact on victims and demonstrating once again, that crime doesn’t pay.”

Detective Inspector John Black, head of the Cyber Dependent Crime Unit at Merseyside Police, said:

“Cybercrime often requires complex investigations and in the last year since the Merseyside Cyber Security Programme was launched, our cybercrime unit has investigated a wide variety of cases affecting businesses, ranging from the unauthorised accessing of customer data by ex-employees through to ransomware attacks.

“Most notably, our cybercrime unit tracked down a teenage phone hacker who stole £66,551 from a woman and five companies using PayPal. Following a 16-month investigation, in September last year, the offender was sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court and given a 12-month jail term, suspended for a year.

“We are relentless in our pursuit of cybercriminals, but prevention is an important part of tackling cybercrime, so we encourage small and medium-sized businesses in Merseyside to sign up for one of the remaining places on the training programme.

“The training is free, and businesses can learn how to help protect their data and assets and prevent the sort of financial loss that we have seen some suffer as a result of a cyber-attack.”

DI Dan Giannasi, head of cyber and innovation at the NWCRC, who has been seconded from the North West Regional Organised Crime Unit, said:

“We’ve been incredibly pleased with how many businesses are taking up the free training places. It’s been great to see how we’ve supported organisations on their cyber security journey and the feedback from the businesses has been excellent.

“It’s so important for us to continue working on preventative action and education around the growing threats of cybercrime to businesses.”

The free programme includes a one-to-one session for each business to help them understand how to stay secure against cyber criminals and fraudsters. It also includes a free membership to the NWCRC, so that businesses can stay up to date with the fast-changing world of cybercrime.

The programme was launched at Liverpool ACC with Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram in August 2023.

A Government report ‘The cost of cybercrime’ estimates that attacks cost the UK economy £27bn per year. Half of all businesses and a third of charities in the UK reported that they had experienced a cyber breach or attack within the last 12 months.

The Alder Centre, located at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, has relaunched the Child Death Helpline to provide crucial support to anyone affected by the death of a child.

Staffed by volunteers who are themselves bereaved parents, this national service, from The Alder Centre, offers a compassionate listening ear, support, and guidance for anyone impacted by such a loss, whether it occurred recently or many years ago.

This includes healthcare professionals, police, emergency services, schools, parents, family and friends of the deceased child. Trained volunteers are all bereaved parents supervised and supported by professional teams at The Alder Centre who provide signposting, support and a listening ear.

Research shows that one of the best supports following a child’s death is from others who have also experienced the death of a child, as they understand the unique feelings raised.  Most calls to the helpline are from parents and step-parents followed by grandparents and aunts/uncles.

The Helpline was previously a combined partnership between Great Ormond St Children’s Hospital and Alder Hey. In 2023, Alder Hey became the sole Trust responsible for ensuring this valuable national bereavement support was not lost.

The Helpline complements the hospital’s unique bereavement service, which includes the Snowdrop Team that supports the family when a child dies, and The Alder Centre who provide ongoing care. Recognised across the country as a gold standard service and envied by other hospital bereavement services up and down the country.

Michelle Meredith is the co-ordinator at the Child Death Helpline and has been increasing awareness by forging links with charities, councils, funeral directors and other bereavement services across the country.

Michelle said:

“The Child Death Helpline is such an important service. We know that often bereaved parents want to help others going through similar situations, and this can be anyone from a parent, grandparent or anyone else affected by the death of a child including the police and emergency services.

“Following 10 years of volunteer work in child death with various charities and hospitals, I’m now responsible for recruitment, selection, training of call handlers, and ensuring a high standard of service to callers. I’ll also be speaking at The Northern Bereavement Loss Conference for Children and Young People in October.”

Diane Barrett volunteers at The Alder Centre every week for the past eight months, welcoming and talking to families. Diane is also starting training to work on the child death helpline. In 2017, Diane said goodnight to her son Ryan, but when she went to wake him in the morning, he had sadly passed away.

Diane said:

“I was in a really bad place when I first came to The Alder Centre, but through counselling, various therapies and just being in a place where I could be normal and talk about anything, they have helped me get to where I am now. They have built my confidence and now I can help others going through the same thing, which I think is really special. I wanted to make Ryan proud and knew this is what he would have wanted me to do.”

The Alder Centre was established in 1989 by a small group of health care professionals in partnership with bereaved parents who identified a gap in the services available to child-bereaved families. Over the past 35 years, the service has reached over 10,000 families. It is the only purpose-built dedicated child bereavement centre in the UK offering care and education to ensure a healthier, happier, and fairer future where those affected by the death of a child can achieve their full potential.

The Child Death Helpline invited bereaved families, and anyone affected by the death of a child to leave a voice message to their child or children they have care for via an audio booth during the relaunch of the Child Death Helpline on 30th August. These messages will be stored on a special USB stick to be buried within the grounds of The Alder Centre.

Anyone affected by the loss of a child can contact the Child Death Helpline here: Call freephone 0808 800 6019.

Perfecting your form not only maximizes the effectiveness of your workout but also keeps injuries at bay. So next time you hit the gym, remember: lift smart, not just heavy.

Since October 2023, Liverpool City Council’s Alcohol and Tobacco Unit (ATU) has been on a mission to rid the city of illegal vapes, seizing more than 30,200 products valued at an astonishing £362,736 and shutting down 26 shops.

The crackdown on illegal vapes is part of an ongoing effort to protect communities from the dangers posed by illegal and unregulated products.

Tactics used by the team include an underage test purchase programme, unannounced premises searches, and collaboration with partners such as Merseyside Police.

Last week, two further shops in Liverpool were closed due to illegal sales—Rathbone Express and Grab & Go, both in Wavertree. Both shops received three-month closure orders at Wirral Magistrates’ Court.

Whilst genuine vaping products can be an effective tool for those looking to quit smoking, all the vapes seized are illegal as they exceed the legal limit of 20mg per millilitre of nicotine and 600 puffs.

These illegal vapes, often sold under names like ‘Unicorn Juice’ and ‘Strawberry Sensation,’ are not only highly dangerous due to their excessive nicotine content but are also worryingly marketed towards children. The disregard for safety and legality by these sellers poses a significant public health risk, especially to younger, more vulnerable members of the community.

The vapes seized by the team are recycled by a Manchester-based contractor authorised by Trading Standards North West to recycle these products.

Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Culture, Councillor Harry Doyle, said:

”The continued work by our Alcohol and Tobacco Unit sends a clear message that we will not tolerate the sale of illegal and potentially dangerous vaping products in Liverpool. Our priority is to protect our residents, particularly our youth, from the risks associated with these unregulated products.

We urge people to report any suspicious activities related to illegal vape sales. Those looking for support to quit smoking should seek advice from professionals and use only legally compliant products.”

Young fitness and fresh air lovers in Sefton now have even more opportunity to enjoy the Borough’s green spaces with the launch of another parkrun.

Part funded by Sefton Council, the Borough now boasts two free junior parkrun sessions which take place every Sunday morning in Hesketh Park, Southport and Derby Park, Bootle respectively.

Junior parkruns are free, timed, 2km events where children aged 4-14 years old can walk, jog or run outdoors.

Sefton’s events are just two of more than 450 junior events across the UK and both are boosted by Sefton Council grants, which helped to facilitate their set-up and launch.

More than 400 children have already taken part in Derby Park’s junior parkrun, with participants helping to cover an astonishing 5,800km so far.

Cllr Mhairi Doyle, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health and Wellbeing, said:

“We’re thrilled to see the positive impact that parkrun is having on our young people in Sefton.

“It’s a fantastic way to encourage healthy lifestyles, build confidence, and foster a sense of community.

“By making exercise fun and accessible, parkrun is a must for people of all ages!”

Southport GP Dr Simon Tobin, the Co-Event director of Hesketh Park parkrun, said: “I wasn’t sure how much interest there would be when we decided to set up a junior parkrun in Hesketh Park but by our third session we were welcoming 110 local children.

“It’s an absolute joy to see parents chatting and making connections whilst their kids are having a great time doing some exercise in the park.

“We’ve had loads of feedback from parents about how much their children have loved coming along. Many parents can’t believe that parkruns are completely free, all you need to do is register online.”

Rachel Wilson, Co-Event Director at Derby park junior parkrun added: “Derby Park junior parkrun has made a positive impact on the local area. It helps bring the community together on a Sunday morning.

“We have seen children grow in confidence and the self-belief that they gain makes everyone involved very proud.
