Delifonseca Dockside, the award-winning eatery and deli on Brunswick Way, is launching a series of exciting food and drink events aimed at encouraging more people to visit and support the much-loved local business.
After celebrating its 14th birthday, Delifonseca is stepping up efforts to navigate the challenges facing the hospitality industry, due to rising costs, by offering new dining experiences.
Running from mid-September through to December, the events, which will be led by Delifonseca’s experienced team and guest experts from across the country, will include everything from spice-themed evenings to wine and food pairings, offering something for every taste.
The series includes a Portuguese Wine & Food Night on Friday 20 September, followed by an Oktoberfest-themed food and beer evening on September 27, and a Champagne Tasting Night on October 4.
Candice Fonseca, Owner of Delifonseca, said:
“We know times are challenging for everyone, but we’ve always relied on the support of our local customers.
“After 14 years, we’re proud of how far we’ve come, but we’ve had to adapt to keep things going, especially after expanding the restaurant right in the middle of lockdown. We’ve always run events, but now we’re increasing the number and variety to appeal to even more people. It’s all about offering something different while still giving diners a great experience.”

In addition to the upcoming events, the restaurant is offering special group bookings for celebrations, with complimentary birthday cakes for parties of eight or more who book a three-course meal on a Friday or Saturday.
Candice added:
“With plenty of space and a welcoming atmosphere, we really are inviting everyone – whether you’re a regular or a first-time visitor – to join us for these events. Even though we’ve been in business for nearly two decades, with a few national awards under our belts, there are still plenty of people who don’t know who we are.
“For us to keep going, we need to reach those people and show them what we offer. That’s why we’re focusing on filling our calendar and finding new ways to connect with a wider audience. It’s all about making sure we stay relevant and continue to grow, especially in these tough times.”

Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram today announced the first public consultation on the world’s largest tidal power scheme and revealed the scheme has entered the formal planning process, with the submission of a scoping report to the Planning Inspectorate.
A six-week public consultation on the scheme will begin on October 1, offering local people and organisations the opportunity to comment on initial proposals for a tidal barrage across the River Mersey and its associated infrastructure.
The scheme is being developed as a barrage that will deliver enough clean, predictable energy to power hundreds of thousands of homes for 120 years.
The Scoping Report has been submitted to agree the ecology surveys that will need to be prepared ahead of a planning submission in 2026.
Submitting a scoping opinion is the first step towards preparing a Development Control Order (DCO) submission – a process which typically takes two to three years.
Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, said:
“The Mersey Tidal Project is one of the most challenging schemes to deliver due to the environmental, ecological and economic considerations, but it’s potential to generate clean, green and predictable energy would be worth all the effort we are putting into this planning stage.
“The River Mersey has been the lifeblood of our region’s fortunes for centuries, and today marks another important milestone in its future. With the launch of our first public consultation and the start of the formal planning process, Mersey Tidal Power is moving closer to reality than at any stage in our history.
“This project has the potential to power hundreds of thousands of homes with renewable energy for 120 years while creating thousands of green jobs. It’s a once-in-a-generation opportunity to cement our position as Britain’s Renewable Energy Coast and help lead the global charge to net zero. This is about much more than just an energy generation scheme—it’s a chance to build a lasting legacy for our people and our planet.”
Starting next week, households in areas closest to the proposed project will receive invitations to public consultation events, with ten events planned across the city region.
The engagement events will enable people to find out more about the project, meet the team behind it, and have their say on proposals.
The consultation will also feature a dedicated on-line consultation site, live from 23 September, that will host information on the scheme as well as an on-line survey.
Feedback from the consultation will help develop project proposals and will be considered alongside ongoing engineering design and environmental assessment work.

A report to the Combined Authority’s meeting in March revealed the city region is pursuing a barrage between the Wirral and Liverpool as the preferred option for the Mersey Tidal Power project. The Mersey Tidal Power project will be discussed at events at the forthcoming Labour Party conference.
The scheme – the “first of a kind” in the UK – could generate clean, predictable energy for 120 years and create thousands of jobs in its construction and operation.
It also opens the possibility of a first-ever cycling and pedestrian route over the river between Liverpool and Wirral and could provide a defence against future flooding risks associated with climate change.
Over the last three years, the authority has undertaken early technical work to develop the potential scope of the scheme, which could be up and running within a decade, playing a huge role in the region’s push to be net zero carbon by 2035 – at least a decade ahead of national targets.
Mersey Tidal Power would add to offshore wind, hydrogen and solar projects as the city region becomes the UK’s Renewable Energy Coast – providing greater domestic energy security.
The March report to the Combined Authority noted that a barrage option would be less expensive than a man-made lagoon, requiring less material and more appropriate levels of government support.
The multi-billion-pound Mersey Tidal Power project would use tried and tested technology for the first time in the UK.
Further opportunities to provide feedback will take place as the project progresses. A further round of statutory consultation is planned for 2025, during which refined proposals will be presented for comment. Following the statutory consultation, proposals will be finalised ahead of an application for a Development Consent Order.
As part of the formal planning process, The Mersey Tidal Power Project has now formally submitted a scoping report to the Planning Inspectorate.
The scoping opinion submission describes the project and asks the Planning Inspector to advise on the scope and breadth of ecology surveys needed to complete the documents outlining the environmental impact of the scheme.

Nicola Robson, a new freelance illustrator, has been receiving a lot of attention in the Stand Up For Southport Facebook group after posting a beautiful piece of artwork of the Bijou Cinema on Post Office Avenue in Southport.
The 30-year-old artist moved to Southport a year ago from Exeter with her husband and has already fallen in love with the town.
The couple always wanted to move up north, but when Nicola’s mum moved here and they came to visit, they knew it was the right place for them.
Nicola said: “When we came to visit my mum we loved it. It felt like home.
“The community is so friendly and helps each other. I have never felt more connected to people I don’t know.
“We’ve found it so peaceful and calm too, even just walking to the shops.”

The Bijou Cinema was one of the first places in Southport Nicola came across before she moved.
She followed their Instagram page and thought the place was cool.
She said: “I particularly liked the magical fairy lights down the alleyway at the entrance.
“I thought it was cool when I followed their page and saw they showed all films from old, independent to new ones.”
The cinema artwork was one of Nicolas’s first-ever illustrations of a building. It took her around a day to complete due to all the small details.
When she shared the final version online, she was ‘overwhelmed’ by the positive feedback from everyone.
She said: “I had lots of likes and comments on my post. It’s a fun place and holds lots of memories for people.”
Nicola uses her iPad to create her illustrations, using software such as Procreate and Adobe.

She has been ‘drawing all her life’. Now, having previously completed a bachelor’s in Graphic Design, she has gone ‘full circle’ back to illustration, creating bright and comic-looking designs.
Nicola is just kick-starting her freelance career and is reaching out to local businesses or connections who need posters or artwork for events.
Her most recent illustration of Southport is The Atkinson Clock Tower though she has a long list of other landmarks in the town to complete.
She has recently set up an Etsy to share her designs and has prints of the Bijou Cinema on order.
Nicola wanted to add a thank you to everyone who has requested commissions since her Facebook post.
You can see her other artwork in her portfolio here.
You can look at her prints on Etsy here.

Flight restrictions affecting drones will be imposed above Liverpool city centre as part of the policing operation during the Labour Party Conference.
A temporary airspace restriction will be in place between 10pm on Friday 20 September and 5am on Thursday 26 September, meaning it will be an offence for any unmanned aircraft to fly below 2,000 ft above sea level in a designated area (pictured), without the explicit permission of Merseyside Police.
Drone users flying inside the Restricted Airspace that have not been granted permission will be guilty of committing an offence and could be prosecuted as well as having their equipment seized and confiscated.
The airspace restrictions will have an impact on Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), which refers to drones and their users – this does not affect commercial flights.

Chief Inspector Iain Wyke of Protective Security Operations at Merseyside Police said:
“Our policing plans for the Labour Party Conference are extensive and take into consideration land, sea and air. These airspace restrictions, like other security measures we will have in place such as road closures or patrols on the River Mersey, are aimed at keeping delegates and the wider public safe.
“Specialist resources, made up of Merseyside Police officers and officers from regional and national teams, including air support will be in place for the duration of the conference, and we are also working with partners including the local authority, other emergency services, businesses and the Labour Party to ensure it is a safe and secure event.”
Full details of the restrictions are available on the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) website.
Anyone who wishes to seek consideration for the safe and appropriate flight of a drone in these areas must obtain permission from Merseyside Police by sending an email to: drone.exemptions@merseyside.police.uk.

George’s Place cafe lounge which recently launched on Lord Street in Southport is enjoying an incredible response since opening.
The ‘laid back, chilled out lounge’ is situated at 451-453 Lord Street, on the other side of the road to Sainsbury’s supermarket and has been receiving rave reviews from local residents and visitors to the town.
The opening has seen another quality, local independent bar join the trendy ‘Northern Quarter’ with seating available both inside and out.
On the floors above, the owners are busy creating 15 new luxury apartments as they support the growing trend for town centre living.
George’s Place proprietor Jamie Lodge said: “George’s Place is a very laid back, chilled out lounge.
“The reaction since we opened has been superb. People love it. Things have been very positive. We have had quite a few returning customers which is always great to see.
“Visitors love the quality of service that our staff provide.
“People can sit inside and when the sun shines it’s a real sun trap on Lord Street, with beautiful views. It’s a really sunny spot.
“When the sun is out and everyone is sitting outside all the way along Lord Street, it is a real show stopper.
“Our aim is to play our part in helping to rejuvenate Southport town centre and get Southport back to what it was famous for being, which was very grand.

“This is a great tourist town. It is a safe place, a relaxing place, and the perfect location for families to enjoy.
“At the moment we are not serving food but we are hoping to do so soon. People should check out our social media, here we will share any updates.
“We offer coffees, soft drinks, alcoholic drinks, with lots to choose from. We are open from 9am in the morning until 10pm at night.
“We love all the events that we have here in Southport. We were very proud to see the 100th Southport Flower Show recently, and served lots of people who came to see it.
“We have some great hanging baskets outside so we definitely fit in with the botanic theme!
“It won’t be long now until the British Musical Fireworks Championship and Southport Comedy Festival; there are always lots of reasons for people to come and visit Southport.
“Southport BID works hard to attract families to Southport. We are big supporters of Southport BID, they do so much to support our town.”

Lord Street has enjoyed some major investment in recent months, with more due soon.
The Garrick won planning permission earlier this year to open the UK’s first spa theatre hotel; Harry’s Bar and Sky Bar opened on top of The Grand Southport; Wetherspoon announced its ambition to open a 28-bed hotel in Pavilion Buildings; the new Saltrock shop opened; and work continues to create a new climbing all and cafe at the Albany Buildings.
Jamie said: “We fell in love with this building when we saw it. There is so much history to Lord Street.
“We have properties on the upper floors which we are currently renovating into 15 new apartments.
“We wanted to open a unit on the ground floor and thought George’s Place would be perfect as a stylish new bar.
“Many people will remember this unit as the former Wimpey burger restaurant! They will recognise the famous doors.
“We have put lots of work into this venue, stripping the walls back to bare brick, sand blasting it, keeping the original steel, and keeping the unique original doors. We have kept everything really raw.”
The name is another nod to Southport’s rich heritage.
Jamie said: “We chose George’s Place because we are close to St George’s Church and St George’s Gardens.
“We wanted a local name which would suit the premises and would respect the heritage of Lord Street.”

Chocolate prices soared by 11% in the year to August in bad news for households ahead of Halloween, figures show.
Costs have risen significantly higher than overall supermarket food and drink prices, which increased by 2.7% over the same period, according to the latest Which? inflation tracker.
Cocoa prices have repeatedly hit new records over the last year following poor harvests caused by unusual weather in West Africa.
The cost of Sainsbury’s No Added Sugar Milk Chocolate (100g) has almost doubled, rising from an average of 95p in the three months to the end of August 2023 to £1.84 in the same period in 2024, Which? found.
Among branded versions, Prestat Chocolates & Truffles Assortment (210g) increased by 88% at Ocado, from £17 last August to £32 a year later.
Asda’s Moo Free Dairy Free & Vegan Original Chocolate Bar (80g) rose from £1.50 to £2.40 – an increase of 60%.
The Cadbury Family Treatsize Multipack (216g) increased from £2.50 to £3.72 at Sainsbury’s, while the Cadbury Milk Tray Chocolate Box (360g) rose from £4.01 to £5.74 at Morrisons, and the Twix Caramel & White Chocolate Fingers Biscuit Snack Bars Multipack (9 x 20g) increased from £1.65 to £2.35 at Asda – all price rises of more than 40% in a year.
Some other products also saw significant price increases, according to the tracker, including Sainsbury’s Fat Free Natural Yoghurt (500g) doubling in price from an average 45p to 90p a year later, and Aldi’s Acti Leaf Unsweetened UHT Soya Drink (1L) increasing by 70% from 50p to 85p.

Overall, Which? found food and drink prices were 16.6% higher in the three months to the end of August 2024 compared with the same period two years earlier, showing the challenge many shoppers still face to afford everyday essentials.
Which? Retail editor Ele Clark said: “Our research shows that despite overall food and drink inflation continuing to fall, chocolate prices have risen dramatically in the last year.
“To ensure you get the best value for money on your Halloween chocolate, shop around and compare the price per gram across different pack sizes, retailers and brands.”
An Asda spokesman said: “Asda is consistently recognised as the best-value traditional supermarket in independent price comparison surveys, including the Grocer 33 basket comparison and the Which? monthly big shop trolley comparison.”
A Morrisons spokeswoman said: “We are working hard to keep prices down and competitive for our customers.
“Our More Card members can also earn points on selected purchases, including fuel, and redeem those points for fivers off their shopping. They also benefit from market-leading discounts as well as personalised offers and surprises.”
Sainsbury’s said: “While prices can go up and down for a range of reasons, we’re committed to offering our customers great choice and value when they shop with us, including on Cadbury Family Treatsize Multipack 216g which is available for just £3 with Nectar Prices.”

The North West Air Ambulance Charity has announced a significant increase in its annual fundraising target, raising the goal by £6 million to a new total of £18 million for the financial year 2024/2025.
This 50% rise is essential to support North West Air Ambulance Charity’s (NWAA) vital lifesaving operations across the North West, ensuring it can continue to deliver its service, including night-time operations and crucial helicopter upgrades.
The new funding requirement is reflective of the charity’s commitment to maximising the impact the team has on patients.
Dave Briggs, Operations Director at NWAA said:
“Our new target is going to be difficult to achieve but it is vitally important for the charity’s future. Over the last 12 months, we’ve spent nearly £300,000 on fuel alone for our two helicopters based in Manchester.
“Raising the extra funding is essential to deliver our exceptional lifesaving work, without it people wouldn’t get the treatment they need and the very best opportunity at a second chance.”

Some of the improvements to the charity’s operations include plans to expand the blood-on-board service across all helicopters and cars as well as increasing the ‘night-car’ service from two to seven nights a week.
The charity has also had updates to their helicopters, which allow the team to fly more effectively, whilst carrying an extra 115kg of weight. Not only that but they’ve had a bespoke medical interior refitted to improve access and functionality for both the crew and patients.
Dave continued:
“The new fundraising requirement also takes into consideration a new contract with our helicopter provider, alongside rising operational costs, which covers everything from fuel for the helicopters and cars to the leases on our retail charity stores across the five North West regions.
“We receive no funding from the government or the NHS, we appreciate the ongoing support from our donors, volunteers and partners.”
In the last 25 years, NWAA has attended over 45,000 missions, to donate today or find out how you can get involved and support the charity on their website.

This lies with the audience, who can vote using their mobile phone to decide who they believe is the worthy winner.
Each performance will host a British Sign Language interpreter, who will be displayed on two very large screens on either side of the stage so that the audiences can book tickets and sit almost anywhere in the arena to enjoy the experience with family and friends.

Organisations across Merseyside are being invited to apply for a share of £100,000 which has been seized from criminals to run projects focused on bringing communities together in the wake of the violent disorder on our streets.
Throughout the last two years, £200,000 of cash and assets stripped from criminals through the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) has been reinvested back into good causes in communities across Merseyside through the Community Cashback Fund.
Following the recent shameful scenes of violence and disorder in the region, the Police and Crime Commissioner, Emily Spurrell, and Merseyside Police have decided to focus the next round of funding on projects which are focused on preventing crime by improving community integration and cohesion and tackling hate crime.
Grassroots organisations, charities and voluntary groups can bid for grants of up to £5,000 to fund projects which promote diversity, equality and inclusion and are designed to foster greater understanding between different communities.
Around 20 grants will be available for projects which have a focus on improving understanding of minority communities, raising awareness of the impact of hate crime and challenging harmful attitudes towards other people.
The Community Cashback Fund is one of several initiatives that take place throughout the year which enables the PCC and Merseyside Police to reinvest some of the money seized from criminals back into local communities to help provide vital resources and fund community projects across Merseyside.
Merseyside’s Police Commissioner Emily Spurrell said:
“The scenes of violence we saw in our region last month were shocking and appalling. It was not protest. It was mindless crime and disorder motivated and manipulated by racism and islamophobia and all those involved are now feeling the full force of the law.
“It was a sad reminder that if stereotypes and hate-fuelled attitudes are allowed to fester it can lead to very serious crimes that have devastating consequences on many lives.
“It’s so important we tackle hate crime at the earliest opportunity and focus on building and improving community cohesion and resilience. That’s why we’ve decided that the next round of our Community Cashback Fund should focus on projects which look to prevent crime by promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion.
“In the wake of the riots, we saw the very best of our region as communities came together to help each other to cope and recover. Through this funding we want to support those brilliant local organisations which are working to prevent crime and make their areas safer and stronger.
“By taking the cash out of the pockets of those who bring misery to our communities and investing it into these projects, we can effectively turn bad money into good.”
Chief Constable Serena Kennedy said:
“Merseyside has always rightly prided itself on being a place that is friendly and welcoming of all people, whatever their background.
“The disorder we saw in Southport and Liverpool did not represent those values that so many of us hold dear. The incidents appear to have been fuelled by misinformation online and racist assumptions, as seen by the chanting of many of those involved and the targeting of mosques.
“In the aftermath of the disorder, we did see the best of Merseyside as people came together to restore pride to their communities and say very clearly that they would not tolerate violent offenders intent on driving division.
“We have been inundated with information from the public on those who took part and so far 45 have been sentenced to nearly 100 years in total.
“This money, taken from the ill-gotten gains of criminals, will help build on that and empower those residents who care passionately about where they live to make positive changes.
“It will help foster cohesion right across Merseyside and ultimately prevent the destructive crime and disorder that we saw last month.”
The fund is being managed by the Community Foundation for Merseyside.
James Proctor, Programme Director said:
“We are really pleased to continue the delivery of the Community Cash Back programme in partnership with the Merseyside Police Commissioner and Merseyside Police.
“This will distribute vital funds to charitable groups who support crime prevention initiatives through a focus on promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion.
“The aim is to support projects which enable community cohesion and understanding, to reduce harmful attitudes and behaviours towards people in other communities, and to help our diverse communities to feel safe.”
Some examples of the types of work that can be funded include:
- Community integration and cohesion delivery focused on fostering understanding between different communities, particularly between communities of a different ethnic background, or different faith (or no faith), or between communities and migrants.

- Programmes for adults or young people which seek to challenge and change potential negative/harmful attitudes and behaviours towards other people of a different ethnic background, or sexuality/identity, or who are living with a disability.

- Intervention for men/young men to change potential negative/harmful attitudes and behaviours towards girls/women.

- Activities that seek to prevent and raise awareness about the impact of hate crime.

- Social action projects that seek to raise awareness and address issues affecting historically marginalised people and their rights.

- LGBTQ+ inclusion and pride delivery to help people to feel safe in their communities.

- Raising awareness to prevent exploitation or ‘mate crime’ committed against people with learning differences or people living with disability.

- Advice and information that allows people at risk of discrimination to know their rights.

The fund is being managed by the Community Foundation for Merseyside with applications set to close at 5pm on Monday 14th October.
To apply, please visit the Community Foundation for Merseyside’s website and complete an online application form.

Nearly five decades after he left the village of Port Sunlight where he grew up, the late 80s pop music icon Pete Burns is being featured in a new exhibition of photographs by Francesco Mellina.
Over 40 photographs will be on display for visitors to explore in the exhibition at Bridge Cottage Gallery, set in one of the most distinctive houses of Port Sunlight. The exhibition’s title Total Stranger is taken from the Dead or Alive song of the same name.
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Francesco Mellina took photographs of bands at the famous Eric’s Club in Liverpool, recording the various subcultures in club land during the pivotal post-punk era. During this time, Francesco developed a career as a nationally recognised rock photographer, and was a regular contributor to magazines such as The Face, NME, Melody Maker, Smash Hits, Sounds, iD magazine as well as various publications around the world. Francesco also managed Dead or Alive, guiding them to number one chart success with hits such You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) and Brand New Lover.

Francesco said:
“I am very pleased to be presenting this exhibition of my photographs in Port Sunlight, many of which have never been on display. I think many people will be fascinated to see these early photos of Pete Burns and Dead or Alive, as they capture their youthfulness and give an interesting glimpse into an exciting time in Liverpool’s club scene.
“I became friends with Pete after he caught my eye at the legendary Eric’s Club on Mathew Street and I asked if I could photograph him. I think he would be delighted to see these photographs now on display in his native village.”
The photographs on display in Total Stranger give a glimpse of the early career of Pete Burns, whose father worked at the Unilever factory in Port Sunlight. It is well known Pete was eager to escape to the bright lights of Liverpool over the water from Wirral, where his eye-catching fashion and personality quickly turned him into a local celebrity before rising to international fame as a singer, songwriter and television personality.
It is the first time these unique images celebrating Port Sunlight’s own Pete Burns have been on public display. Visitors will be able to see the exhibition between 21 September until 19 January 2025.

Jean Milton, curator of the exhibition and Director of Heritage at Port Sunlight Village Trust, said:
“We are delighted to be working with Francesco Mellina and to celebrate the life and early career of Pete Burns through Francesco’s images. This exhibition will hopefully bring Pete to a whole new audience and inspire a new generation to be true to who they are and not be afraid to create their own path.”
Bridge Cottage Gallery is open Wednesday–Sunday, 10am–4pm, at 23 Park Road, Port Sunlight CH62 4UP. Entry is by ‘pay what you think’, where visitors decide the price and donate what they feel or can contribute. Every pound given will support Port Sunlight Village Trust’s work to preserve and promote the historic village. The exhibition is not ticketed.

A special service will be held on Friday, 20 September at Liverpool Town Hall to honour and remember the victims of serious violence.
The Serious Violence Remembrance Evening will take place from 6:30pm to 8:30pm, featuring reflections, speeches, and performances from those impacted by violence and city leaders. The public is encouraged to attend and show their support.
The service will include music from the LIPA Choir.
Speakers at The Serious Violence Remembrance Evening include:
- Council Leader, Cllr Liam Robinson
 - Lord Mayor, Cllr Richard Kemp
 - Retired Merseyside Police Chief Superintendent Mark Baker, who led the investigation into the murder of Olivia Pratt-Korbel
 - Rose Dixon, the new Chair of the national bereavement charity ‘Support after Murder and Manslaughter’ (SAMM)

It is the fourth year that the annual event has been held. It was inspired by Mandy Jamieson whose son Danny was stabbed to death in Gateacre in July 2018, aged just 16.
Since the tragedy, Mandy has set up Danny’s Place – a charity which facilitates talks to schools, youth organisations and the probation sector about the ripple effect knife crime can have.
The event is supported by Liverpool City Council’s Culture Liverpool and Safer Stronger Communities teams.
Liverpool Town Hall and other civic buildings will be lit up purple on the night, in remembrance of those who have lost their lives to knife crime.
Earlier this year, the Liverpool Community Safety Partnership – known locally as Citysafe – launched a ‘Serious Violence Reduction Plan’ to tackle the issue.
There has already been success in reducing serious violence in Liverpool over the last year or so, with a number of projects set up to disrupt organised crime and encourage young people to make the right choices.
Examples have included the EVOLVE partnership in Dovecot, Yew Tree and parts of Knowsley, funded by the Home Office. The partnership – which was established following the murder of Olivia Pratt-Korbel – has led to an increase in arrests and intelligence provided by the local community, together with falls in crime.
In Liverpool, between October 2022 and September 2023, murders reduced by 87% (15 > 2), shootings fell by 48% (23 > 12), gun crime dropped by 42% (139 > 81) and knife crime was down 29% (815 > 578).

Mandy Jamieson, Founder of Danny’s Place, said:
“The serious violence remembrance evening is held once a year to remember all loved ones lost to serious violence.
“It’s about showing what is strong, instead of what is wrong in our city.”
Liverpool City Council Leader, Cllr Liam Robinson, said:
“We know that giving an opportunity to friends and family who have experienced the pain of losing loved ones through needless violence to come together with others experiencing the same pain and devastation, is hugely beneficial.
“It is also important that we take the time to reflect on those who have lost their lives and remember that they are avoidable tragedies that impacts many other people for their rest of their lives, long after the media interest has waned.
“Shining a spotlight on serious violence helps educate others and reminds us that we need to do all we can to prevent further tragedies from happening in our city.”
Merseyside’s Police and Crime Commissioner Emily Spurrell said:
“My heart goes out to all families, across Merseyside, who have suffered such unimaginable loss. This service is an important opportunity for us to come together to remember the victims and support those who have been bereaved.
“We are driven to tackle serious violence, we owe it to those innocent people who have lost their lives in the cruellest way, because we know violence isn’t inevitable, it’s preventable. That is why we are working hard with partners from education, health, criminal justice and other sectors to act earlier and reach those who are younger.
“Through our Merseyside Violence Reduction Partnership, we’re taking a long-term approach, going to the very root causes of violence. In the past five years we’ve reached more than 114,000 young people through positive youth interventions, and, this year, we have invested a further half a million pounds to reach even more.
“This is how we create a lasting legacy, addressing the root causes of violence, helping youngsters choose a brighter path in life, breaking the cycle and stopping our young people being drawn into a life of crime and violence so we can all live in safer and stronger communities.”
