Get ready for a magical moment of global unity right here in Liverpool, as The Beatles Story gears up to mark Ringo Starr’s milestone 85th birthday with a heartfelt celebration of his iconic Peace and Love message.

Every year on his birthday since 2008, Ringo has invited fans all over the world to pause at 12 noon (local time) to say, think, or post “Peace and Love.” What started as a personal tradition has since grown into a worldwide celebration—a powerful, simple call for kindness and togetherness.

Once again, Liverpool is doing it in style.

On Sunday 7 July, fans and visitors are encouraged to gather outside The Beatles Story at the Royal Albert Dock, where a special Peace and Love moment will be filmed and shared on Ringo’s official Facebook page, joining celebrations taking place across the globe. But this year’s event is extra special.

In honour of Ringo’s birthday and his lifelong message of peace, The Beatles Story will also be unveiling a brand-new Ringo Starr Peace and Love Sculpture—a striking tribute to one of Liverpool’s most iconic sons.

Handcrafted using an original casting of Ringo’s right hand, the sculpture is a literal and symbolic gesture—showing that Ringo has always had a hand in spreading peace. Made by skilled artisans, it blends thoughtful design with a powerful message and will be displayed as part of the celebration.

This limited-edition piece is part of a global initiative by the Ringo Starr organisation, with just a few being shared with select cultural institutions around the world. Liverpool is now officially one of them.

The sculpture will be on display outside The Beatles Story during the 7 July event, giving fans a chance to see it up close and reflect on Ringo’s personal mission of Peace and Love—right in the city where it all began.

Gary Astridge, from Ringo’s Peace and Love Initiative, said:

“We are pleased to be partnering with the Beatles Story in showcasing Ringo’s Peace & Love statue in his hometown of Liverpool, creating opportunities for reflection, and events based on the Peace & Love Initiative.”

The day isn’t just about celebration—it’s also a chance to shine a light on The Lotus Foundation, the charitable organisation founded by Ringo and his wife Barbara. The Foundation supports vital causes including cancer patients, domestic violence survivors and animal welfare—echoing the compassion Ringo has championed for decades.

Mary Chadwick, General Manager of The Beatles Story, added:

“We’re excited to be hosting Ringo’s birthday celebration on behalf of Liverpool once again here at The Beatles Story this July. After the success of last year’s event, it’s becoming a real tradition for the city and an opportunity for fans to come together and share in Ringo’s global message of Peace and Love. Pairing this with the unveiling of our Ringo Starr Peace and Love Sculpture, we’re incredibly proud to play our part in spreading a message of peace from the place where it all began.”

So whether you’re a lifelong Beatles fan or simply love what Ringo stands for, make sure you’re there on 7 July to take part in a moment of joy, reflection, and togetherness—Liverpool style.

Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet is setting the stage for a summer to remember with the announcement of an exclusive live music event—one of the flagship moments in its ongoing 30th anniversary celebrations.

Taking place on the evening of Friday 6 June, the event will feature a one-off performance by a chart-topping music act renowned for a string of UK number-one hits and iconic tracks from the early 2000s. A specially constructed stage on site will host the performance, delivering a vibrant, festival-style atmosphere at the popular shopping destination.

The evening will be hosted by Hits Radio DJ Kimberly Wyatt, with an additional live DJ set from Take That’s Howard Donald, promising an unforgettable experience for shoppers and music fans alike.

Importantly, the event will be free of charge, open to all customers and members of the local community on the day. While the headline act remains under wraps for now, the night is set to deliver high-energy entertainment and celebrate three decades of style, community, and culture at Cheshire Oaks.

In line with its commitment to the local community, Cheshire Oaks will also be recognising and rewarding its charity partners, staff, and their families. Selected guests from organisations such as The Hospice of the Good Shepherd, Koala, Flynns Port in the Storm, and Claire House will receive exclusive golden circle access, offering the best views of the stage.

Additionally, a limited number of VIP guests from the community will enjoy a meet-and-greet experience with the headline act, making the celebration all the more memorable for those in attendance.

This live music event serves as a central highlight in the outlet’s wider anniversary campaign, which reflects on Cheshire Oaks’ journey since its launch in 1995 and explores the evolution of consumer habits over the past three decades.

Earlier this year, Cheshire Oaks released its 2025 Style Report, revealing that 63% of UK shoppers now prefer in-person retail experiences over online alternatives. The report also pointed to a growing return of nostalgic fashion trends, including 90s-inspired staples like baggy trousers and double denim, signalling a renewed embrace of style eras that defined the outlet’s early years.

With fashion, entertainment, and community spirit at its heart, Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet’s anniversary year continues to celebrate the past while looking ahead to an exciting future.

Cheshire Oaks Then & Now

Kenny Murray, General Manager at Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet, said:

“This anniversary is a moment to celebrate the rich history and vibrant future of Cheshire Oaks. We have evolved continuously over the last three decades, and now it’s time to celebrate in true style.

“Over our 30 years we’ve built a real sense of community that makes this centre special and we want to celebrate this milestone with the local area and people so close to our heart.”

“This summer’s music event, crowned by a secret headline act, promises to be a truly special experience, and a way that we can give back to the loyal customers who have trusted us to bring them the latest fashion trends since the 90s, we can’t wait to enjoy it with them.”

Each month Liverpool legend Pete Price lifts the curtain and takes you into the spotlight of Liverpool’s best theatres.

Not only will he look at the shows on right now that you should see, he’ll look ahead to let you know what’s coming while also re-living some of his – and the city’s – favourite moments on stage from years gone by.

Pete’s never short of an anecdote or an opinion, so here are the shows and stars that have got him talking in May …

What I’ve seen this week

Hamilton - Liverpool Empire
Casey Al-Shaqsy (Eliza Hamilton) and Marley Fenton (Alexander Hamilton). Photo Danny Kaan

I first saw Hamilton in the West End and now at the Empire and both times the production took my breath away, it’s electrifying. I know it’s become famous for its music, that blend of traditional musical theatre with hip hop, RnB, and rapid-fire rap, but for me there was one stand-out element – the character of King George. It’s so different to the rest of the musical and the comic timing of the actor who plays him is brilliant.  I would kill to do that part and I personally think he steals the show.

As well as Hamilton this week I’ve been to see Making It at the Royal Court and I was belly laughing all the way through. It’s a two-hander, Drew Scholfield plays about nine parts alongside Cath Rice who co-wrote it and it’s everything I’ve ever been through in every terrible club! I thought it was tremendous.

What’s coming up

Credit: Only Fools and Horses The Musical

Only Fools and Horses the Musical is coming to the Empire in June and I think the beloved characters from the telly translate well to stage and it really captures the spirit of the show. It’s the Empire’s 100th birthday year so they’re pulling out every stop to bring the big productions here. If you’re a fan of the TV series you’ll love it because people can’t get enough of the characters and they’ve taken the best bits and put them together – Paul Whitehouse is playing grandad on the tour too so that’s a bonus.

Sharing the spotlight

On stage with Pete price Bradly Walsh - The Guide Liverpool

Another great Liverpool venue celebrating a big birthday this year is the Olympia which turns 120. The Prat Pack sold out at the start of May, it was Bradley Walsh, Joe Pasquale, Brian Conley and Shane Richie, and I’ve worked with every one of them. I couldn’t make it that night because I was working but I believe it was spectacular. They’re mates and they’re all old school, they’re the end of that variety era – they did comedy and songs, they’ve all got very good singing voices, and they went down a storm.

Stage in the city

Epstein Theatre - Credit David Munn
Epstein Theatre – Credit David Munn

How exciting it is that the Epstein is reopening, a small space in Liverpool which is needed so much for new theatre, and I’m so pleased that Regal Entertainments are bringing Cinderella there this Christmas. Panto is a tradition at that theatre and it’s priced well for families, so it’s definitely good news. I wish the new owners all the luck in the world.

The showdown

Why do some people feel the need to get up and go to the bar in the middle of a show? A lot of theatres are allowing this now and it’s the most irritating thing. I’ve had people near me going out and coming back with three beers, then they need to get up to go the toilet … and get another beer while they’re there! They spill it when they’re trying to get to their seats in the middle of a row and it’s just so unnecessary.  Theatre manners have gone out the window.

In honour of Ringo’s milestone birthday and lifelong advocacy for peace, The Beatles Story is proud to be unveiling a Ringo Starr Peace and Love Sculpture – a lasting tribute to his message.

The sculpture, created using an original casting of Ringo’s right hand, symbolically and quite literally shows that Ringo had a hand in spreading peace. Each piece is handcrafted by seasoned artisans, blending artistic craftsmanship with heartfelt meaning to create a lasting emblem of positivity.

This limited-edition sculpture is part of an exclusive initiative by the Ringo Starr organisation, with a select number made available to institutions and cultural spaces around the world. The Beatles Story is honoured to have one of these iconic works on display here in Liverpool.

The Beatles Story hopes that the inclusion of this statue in its exhibition will offer visitors a moment of reflection and a tangible connection to Ringo’s personal message of Peace and Love here in the city where his story began.

The statue will be on display outside The Beatles Story during the Peace and Love event on 7th July, offering attendees a chance to view it up close as part of the celebration.

Gary Astridge, from Ringo’s Peace and Love Initiative, said:

Local policing in south Sefton are holding free bike marking events to encourage the public to protect their bikes from theft or robbery this Summer.

Now that the days are getting longer many people will be enjoying the sunshine on their bikes, which sadly can attract thieves.

Marking your bike can act as a deterrent to would-be thieves as the bike is permanently marked and  makes it more difficult to sell.

At the free bike marking event, it will be marked with a unique code and added to the national Bike Register database, making it easier for police to reunite stolen bikes with their owners. Then when a bike is found, officers can check the Bike Register to see if they have been reported as lost or stolen and return it to their rightful owner.

Free Bike Marking Liverpool

The free bike marking events will be held on the following days:

• Friday 16 May at Netherton Activity Centre from 10am to 12pm
• Thursday 22 May at The Meadows, Maghull Leisure Centre from 3pm to 5pm
• Friday 23 May at Maghull Cricket Club, from 3pm to 5pm

With the popularity of electric bikes being used, did you know that there are certain requirements to ensure that electrically assisted pedal cycles (EAPCs) can be legally ridden?

• Cyclists must be aged 14 and over to ride an electric bike as long as it meets certain requirements
• The maximum speed an electric bike can reach with the motor being used is 15.5mph
• The motor has a maximum power output of 250 watts

If an electric bike does not meet the EAPC rules it is classed as a motorcycle or moped which then needs to be registered and taxed, and the rider will need a driving licence and wear a crash helmet.

Chief Inspector for South Sefton Local Policing, Jordan Quinn said:

“Bikes, especially electric bikes, can be costly items to buy, and these bike marking events will help secure their property and help us to return it to the rightful owner.

“As bikes can be expensive I would advise people to consider purchasing a tracking device to help provide peace of mind in the chance of recovering a stolen bike.

“However please be assured that we are working hard to disrupt and arrest offenders with officers actively on patrol in the area.

Free Bike Marking Liverpool

“We have also provided advice to parents, via schools, about the legal requirements to ride electric bikes and that children need to be aged 14 years plus.

“In addition we advise people to purchase electric bikes from authorised retailers to ensure the lithium battery fitted the bike meet safety requirements so they don’t cause a fire.

“If you own a bike or e-bike, please come along to one of our upcoming events, within a few minutes your bike will be registered and better protected.”

Anyone with any information about anti-social behaviour or the illegal use of bikes is asked to call Merseyside Police on 101, DM us @MerPolCC or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Although the club was short-lived, growing popular in early 1990 and closing at the beginning of 1992, it played a pivotal role in the evolution of club culture in the North West and beyond. Demolished in 1992, and with nothing at the site now hinting at its rich history, the story of Quadrant Park ran the risk of being lost.

QUAD is a project celebrating the legacy of the legendary club and the vital role it played in cultural history. Over the past year, people who went to Quadrant Park in its heyday, along with young people living in Bootle today, have been invited to collaboratively develop an archive of photographs, flyers, leaflets, and other ephemera. The project also included digital music production workshops with young people and interviews with those who contributed to the archive.

To celebrate the 35th anniversary of Quadrant Park, QUAD have collaborated with Quadrant Park Reunions to bring the party Back to Bootle, hosting an exhibition at Salt & Tar alongside the reunion party in Bootle for the first time since the venue closed.

Bringing together displays of archival material and a timeline of how the style, graphic design and music developed in Quadrant Park’s short lifespan, visitors are invited to find themselves in the crowd in the photographs, learn about this explosive moment in the development of club culture and celebrate Quadrant Park together. By no means a definitive history, the project brings together the myriad memories and histories that make up that brief and explosive cultural moment. Join us to celebrate subculture’s place in the archive. A book will be available later this year, drawing together the archival materials and interviews with those who went to Quadrant Park.

Dave Evans, lead artist said:

“Working on this project to archive material relating to Quadrant Park has been a real privilege. The material that has been contributed really captures the energy of the club and it’s great to know it will be safe and accessible for the future with Sefton Libraries. The Quad community has been so generous and it’s given me a real insight into how pivotal that time and place was in so many people’s lives.”

Over the last year, young people aged 16-24 have taken part in music production and DJ skills workshops with Melissa Kains, DJ, producer and founder of female and non-binary DJ collective Sisu Crew as well as a 6 week course with Melissa and Scrapyard Studios CIC. Visitors can hear some of the music made in these workshops on the archive which will launch on 24th of May on the library website.

There will also be screen printing with Rhonda Davies of Liverpool Community Print Station CIC, making t-shirts and other exclusive merch.

Original QUAD DJs John Kelly and Andy Carroll will be playing alongside special guests for the reunion party. Tickets are available here.

The exhibition will be open at Salt & Tar on 24th May and be open for the rest of the summer. Open to all ages.

Queue Up And Dance is a collaboration between Sefton Libraries, Rule of Threes Arts and lead artists Dave Evans and Melissa Kains. It builds on conversations between Dave and the original Quadrant Park DJs, Mike Knowler and Andy Carroll, and the vibrant and active online Quadrant Park Reunions community on Facebook.

Funded by Historic England’s Everyday Heritage grant programme, celebrating working class histories. Made possible with The National Lottery Heritage fund, with thanks to National Lottery players.

The Bentley is hoping to make it a hat-trick this summer, as the Liverpool city centre venue has been shortlisted once again for Best Venue in Merseyside/Wirral at the County Brides North West Wedding Awards.

Tucked away on the corner of Brunswick Street and The Strand, The Bentley has become one of the region’s most popular wedding venues, known for its stunning views across the waterfront and the city’s iconic Three Graces.

Since opening eight years ago, the team has built a reputation for creating unforgettable celebrations – and now they’re in with a chance of winning the prestigious title for the third year in a row.

General manager Ryan Dillon says being nominated again means everything to the staff who work so hard behind the scenes to make every couple’s big day feel extra special.

“We go over and above for our weddings because we know how much it means to people,” says Ryan. “For a lot of couples, it’s something they’ve dreamed about since they were kids. We want them to walk into The Bentley and think, ‘Wow.’ It’s all about creating those magical moments.”

The County Brides North West Wedding Awards celebrate the best in the business across the region and are especially meaningful because winners are chosen by real couples and guests who’ve experienced their special day at the venues.

“The fact that people have taken the time to vote for us makes it really personal,” Ryan adds. “To win for a third year would be incredible – we’re keeping everything crossed for the awards night.”

As Everton Football Club prepares for its next chapter with the men’s team set to relocate to a new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, a landmark decision has been made that secures the future of Goodison Park and reinforces the Club’s long-standing commitment to the women’s game.

The Club has officially confirmed that, following the men’s move, Goodison Park will become the dedicated home of Everton Women. This long-term vision ensures that the iconic stadium will continue to serve both football and the local community, while also playing a vital role in the development of the women’s game.

This announcement is made all the more significant when considered through the lens of Goodison Park’s historical importance to women’s football. On 27 December 1920, the stadium hosted one of the most notable events in the sport’s early history—a Boxing Day match between the trailblazing Dick, Kerr Ladies and St. Helens Ladies. The fixture drew an official crowd of more than 45,000, with thousands more unable to gain entry.

The Dick, Kerr Ladies, a team formed of munitions factory workers from the North West, were among the most prominent women’s teams of the era. They featured renowned figures such as Lily Parr, widely regarded as one of the greatest players of her generation, as well as Alice Kell and Florrie Redford. That day, the Dick, Kerr side triumphed 4-0 and raised £3,100 (equivalent to approximately £130,000 in 2025) for servicemen’s charities.

Such was the scale of public interest that the Lord Mayor of Liverpool attended the match, and police escorts were required to navigate the crowds lining Goodison Road. However, despite the match’s success and growing popularity of the women’s game, the Football Association imposed a ban on women playing on affiliated pitches just months later—a restriction that lasted for five decades.

Now, more than 100 years later, Everton Football Club is restoring Goodison Park’s role as a home for women’s football, marking a momentous return to a venue steeped in both history and symbolism.

Richie Gillham, Secretary of the Everton FC Heritage Society and Member of the Everton Fan Advisory Board, said:

“This is about more than just bricks and mortar – it’s about building a legacy. Everton Women will now have a permanent base to grow and thrive, and to do it at a ground with such historical significance is incredibly special for all Evertonians.

“The women that graced Goodison Park that represented both Dick, Kerr Ladies and St Helens weren’t just footballers, they were pioneers. At a time when society placed strict limits on what women could do, these players challenged the boundaries and captured the imagination of huge crowds up and down the country.

“Evertonians have a saying of ‘if you know your history’, that is why it is fitting and deeply meaningful that the very same ground that held the record attendance for a women’s fixture for so many years will now become home to Everton Women and they will now have the honour of inspiring the next generation.”

The Club’s regeneration plans will retain the character and heritage of Goodison Park while transforming it into a world-class venue for Everton Women. Located in the heart of Liverpool 4, the stadium’s continued use as a competitive home ground will provide supporters with an opportunity to be part of an exciting new era at one of football’s most iconic sites.

From the pioneering players of 1920 to the current generation of elite athletes, Goodison Park is once again poised to play a defining role in the growth and celebration of women’s football—with Everton Women at its core.

Blackstock Market came to the rescue of Liverpool singer Jamie Webster yesterday after he was on the lookout for a city roof terrace to film his new music video.

Jamie put a shout out on Instagram with a photo of what he was looking for. “So we showed him a picture of our new roof garden – which he said was a bit too posh,” laughs Paul Blair, co-owner and co-founder of Blackstock Market and Hot Water Comedy, which opened its new roof garden only a month ago.

But Paul and his team had another idea.

“I sent him a photo of our other roof above the whisky bar (to the left of the building) which we plan to turn into a sky garden,” says Paul, “and said it was a shame we couldn’t use that.

“But of course, Jamie looked at that and loved it – and asked if there was any way they could use it.

“I told him it wasn’t really accessible but we could probably make it work, and so it came about from that.”

Jamie Webster films new video with James Nelson-Joyce - Blackstock Market Rooftop

Jamie spent around three or four hours on the roof terrace, filming with a group including Bootle actor James Nelson-Joyce who played gangster Michael Kavanagh in This City Is Ours, and Paul says:

“I don’t know what the single’s called or when it’s out, but Jamie and James and the crew were really nice.

“My brother Binty was there hosting them, and says it went really well.

“With the rooftop not being developed, it was exactly what they were looking for – and the views are insane from there – and it’s bizarre to think that at some point, exactly where they were filming will have customer seating!”

Paul adds:

“The guys were all really nice, really sound, and the staff all got photos with them, they were made up.

“Lily, our assistant manager, was very, very starstruck. I think Jamie and James were her two dream guys, and so she had a great shift.  Her venue report after said ‘not much happened today, quite a quiet Wednesday…not! And then she went into how she’d enjoyed it so much.

That side of the Blackstock building already has a history, having been used in the blockbuster film 51st State with Samuel L Jackson and the Netflix series Top Boy: “I think 51st State filmed a couple of floors down and someone got killed there,” reveals Paul, “and there was a big chalk mark made around the body.”

Paul says he and co-founder brother Binty hope to open the rooftop as a sky garden for up to 500 people by about May next year.

And he says: “It will be something different from what Liverpool, or even the UK, has ever seen.”

Netball’s heading back to the M&S Bank Arena this weekend – and Prescot player Jay Power says he’s hoping it will show that netball’s not just for girls.

Jay has been playing the sport for more than a decade and is a member of the Manchester Thunder men’s team kicking off the action on Sunday before the main event: the Netball Super League (NSL) women’s match between Manchester Thunder – one of the most successful teams in the league – and Birmingham Panthers.

The 34-year-old is goal shooter and goal attack for the men’s and mixed team for Manchester Thunder, who created the first fully-integrated elite-level women’s, men’s, and mixed netball franchise in the world.

And he’s hoping that seeing men play the sport will encourage more men, and boys, to get involved.

He said:

“Men’s netball is growing fast internationally as well as in the UK, and I’m hoping that the event in Liverpool will inspire a huge increase of participation in the sport,” he says.

“It’s about exposure of the sport and making men aware of it.

“It’s a sport that’s accessible for everyone, and not just females!”

Jay and Manchester Thunder

Jay explains:

“I got into playing netball through charity tournaments and workplace tournaments where they took along partners, and through my mum who’d also played netball for a few years.

“I’d watch her and go along to some of the training sessions to get a feel for what was going on, and I just kind of fell in love with the sport from there.

“It’s a similar sport to basketball but I didn’t have access to basketball in my area, and netball is different in terms of the physicality of it, the speed, the fitness, that kind of stuff.

“That’s what drew me to it.”

“Basketball has more freedom. Because you can’t move once you’ve got the ball in netball, there’s an intensity to the decision making, it’s high-pressured, and it gets the adrenaline flowing. That was the drive for me – along with fitness and trying to lose a bit of weight – and my enjoyment of it.”

Jay started playing in a mixed social league in Manchester where he works at Manchester NHS Foundation Trust as head of soft services (non-clinical activity) and it grew from there.  He now plays men’s and mixed netball for Manchester Thunder which he says increases the social aspect of the sport too, with events organised outside the sporting arena.

He is also a coach to the senior teams at Phoenix Netball Club in Wavertree, which has players from age six, and is ‘really encouraging men and boys to come along and get involved’.

“It’s about trying to get more people and more men involved, in particular in Liverpool and Merseyside, and that’s why this game in Liverpool on Sunday is so important for me.

“We saw a huge increase in interest when the Netball World Cup was at M&S Bank Arena and I think it will help us to get the word out there now.

“So yes it’s about awareness, and once people are aware, about accessibility and opening up the opportunity. That’s why we’re encouraging people to bring their partners and sons, and nephews, on Sunday.

“If you look at Australia, the men’s set up there is huge and it’s because of accessibility – they are way out there ahead and have had a national team for years, and other men’s teams.  It’s breaking down that barrier of people thinking it’s a female-only sport.

“And we need to build that momentum from an early age.”

“Netball is a great sport and a great way to meet people – many of my closest friends now are people I’ve played netball with.

“There are transferable skills that people will find they have and the rules of netball are easy to learn and understand so it’s easy to pick up.  Just give it a try.”

To find a netball team or opportunity near you, Jay suggests the following:

The England men’s and mixed association and offers a club finder to help find clubs in local areas: www.Englandmmna.com

On Sunday, May 18, doors open at the M&S Bank Arena at 4pm with the Manchester Thunder men’s team raising the curtain at 4.15pm.  The women’s NSL match between Manchester Thunder and Birmingham Panthers will start at 6.30pm, and there will activities for families around the arena.

Up to 50 volunteers are being sought to participate in a pilot scheme for Merseyrail’s new Tap & Go system—an innovative fare payment solution designed to guarantee the best available fare and eliminate the need to queue for tickets.

This pilot marks a significant milestone in the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority’s plans to introduce a London-style integrated transport network, with the full rollout of Tap & Go scheduled for later this year.

Participants in the trial will have the opportunity to evaluate the ease and efficiency of the system, which allows passengers to simply tap in and out of their journey using a MetroCard linked to their bank account—removing the need for paper tickets or ticket office interaction.

Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, commented:

“The measure of any 21st century public transport system is how quickly, cheaply and easily it helps passengers get from A to B – and that starts by how people pay for their journey. For too long, passengers in our region have been forced to contend with an outdated, antiquated and fragmented ticketing system that simply doesn’t work in their favour.”

“Our plans for a new tap-and-go system will make it easier than ever for passengers, removing unnecessary queues and ensuring they never have to pay over the odds to get about our region. We’ve seen how well it can work in places like London – and now it’s time that we built a system befitting of a modern, future-facing city region like ours.”

“Moving to this testing stage is a big step forward towards rolling out this technology which will unlock so many benefits for our region, removing the need for unnecessary queues, ensuring that no one spends more than they need to get around our region – and protecting revenue streams for further investment in improvements.

“We’ve seen how well it works in London and now it’s time that we built our own system to benefit the residents of our city region.”

Suzanne Grant, Chief Commercial Officer and Deputy Managing Director at Merseyrail, stated:

“We are delighted to see the start of the public testing phase of Tap & Go. Customers have told us they want simpler, more modern ticketing and this pilot marks the start of a retail revolution for Merseyrail.”

“With a MetroCard linked to their bank account, customers can enjoy quicker, easier, and better value journeys. When Tap & Go officially launches, our team will be on hand to help customers navigate this exciting new way of paying for their travel.”

Tap & Go is the latest in a series of investments aimed at modernising ticketing and improving passenger experience across the city region’s public transport system. The system automatically calculates the most cost-effective fare for each passenger, using data from entry and exit taps on station gates or platform validators. Daily and weekly fare caps will ensure that passengers always receive the best possible value.

The full implementation of Tap & Go will occur in two phases. In summer 2025, the system will become available at all Merseyrail stations for passengers using MetroCards. A subsequent phase will expand the service to include direct payments using contactless bank cards and smart devices, such as mobile phones and watches.

This development forms part of the Combined Authority’s broader strategy to encourage public transport use, reduce car dependency, and support the region’s ambition to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2035.

Significant progress is also being made on improving accessibility and expanding the Merseyrail network. The introduction of a £500 million fleet of modern trains is already underway, alongside the opening of a new station at Headbolt Lane. Additional stations are planned for Liverpool Baltic, Carr Mill (St Helens), Daresbury (Halton), and Woodchurch (Wirral).

Over 70% of stations across the region now feature step-free access from pavement to platform, complemented by the deployment of innovative sliding-step technology on new trains, further enhancing the network’s accessibility.

For those interested in shaping the future of transport in the Liverpool City Region, the Tap & Go pilot offers a unique opportunity to contribute to this transformative journey.

Applications to join the pilot scheme are now open via the Merseyrail website.

Award-winning television presenter Gethin Jones and former world champion boxer Tony Bellew will host a special post-match ceremony on Sunday as Everton’s Senior Men’s team say farewell to Goodison Park.

The ‘End of an Era’ ceremony following our Premier League match against Southampton (kick-off 12pm BST) will bring together current players and Blues legends to celebrate 133 years of Goodison.

As well as these special appearances, there will be live musical performances and specially-curated big-screen content as we give the Grand Old Lady a fitting send off.

Bellew, a lifelong Evertonian who famously won the WBC cruiserweight title at Goodison in 2016 with a stunning third-round knockout of Ilunga Makabu, told Everton FC about his excitement at hosting – and his emotions going into our Men’s team’s final home game before the move to the world-class Everton Stadium from next season.

Tony Bellew said:

“It’s weird because a part of me keeps thinking about Everton Stadium, but a big part is sad because it’s the end at Goodison for our Men’s team. I’ll have to wait until Sunday but I imagine it’ll be emotional.

“I’ve spent my life at Goodison Park and my lifelong dream [of winning a world championship] was lived out at Goodison Park.

“The Club has done everything possible to make it as enjoyable as possible on Sunday.

“As sad as it’ll be, I’m looking forward to hosting with Gethin. It’ll be a day to remember and I can’t wait to be part of it.”

Jones, who hosted BBC’s Blue Peter for three years and has gone on to present a wide range of programmes on national television, including BBC’s coverage of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022, is also a passionate Blue.

He spoke of his honour to be part of a historic day this weekend.

“I was absolutely blown away to be asked to play a part,” Jones told evertonfc.com. “Honestly, I was straight on with my mates on WhatsApp!

“Anyone reading this will know the stats and the 133-year history of the Grand Old Lady, and its place as the cornerstone in the cultural fabric of the city.

“It’s going to be some send-off come Sunday – emotional, for sure, with some incredible memories to reflect on.”

Bellew has been there for many great Goodison nights, not least being the only boxer to win a world championship at the Grand Old Lady.

But ‘Bomber’ also remembers many a great footballing moment in the decades he has been watching matches in L4.

Bellew said:

“The greatest night of my whole career was at Goodison Park. I dreamed of being able to play for Everton but I wasn’t good enough, so the closest thing was sticking a ring in the middle of the pitch!

“The WBC world title was the one I always targeted. The great John Conteh held it and Bill Kenwright made it happen for me. I lived those dreams that night.

“I don’t remember who we played in my first game watching Everton, but I remember Peter Beardsley scored two goals. My brother took me when I was nine or 10 years old and I was hooked.

“The relief I felt against Wimbledon in ’94 was unbelievable. I had tears of joy. I went flying that day, I slipped on my way back and went through about 15 people. Everyone I ended up going through was laughing.

“I’ll never ever forget that Palace game a few years ago as long as I live, the same with Bournemouth with Doucs scoring that goal, and the 2-2 win over Liverpool with Tarky scoring in the last minute!”

Jones fell in love with the Blues during the successful 1980s and knows Sunday afternoon will be a difficult one for many Evertonians, but is excited to give Goodison Park a sensational send-off.

“I was six or seven when I demanded my first shirt after we won the FA Cup in 1984, and, of course, winning the league and Cup Winners’ Cup the next season,” said Jones.

“As a proud Welshman, I’m sure a lot of it had to do with Kevin Ratcliffe captaining the side, and big Nev in goal!

“It’s a proud history, unique, the oldest purpose-built football stadium in the world. It’s tough to move on but I think every Everton fan wants the Club to be winning trophies, competing at the very top, and these days you need to move with the times.

“Sunday’s show is going to be spectacular. So if you are going to be there after the game, grab a drink and get back to your seats. The pitch will become a stage – and the stage will be set to give the Grand Old Lady the send-off she deserves.”

Following a triumphant debut earlier this year, the feel-good country musical Under the Mersey Moon is set to make a grand return to the Floral Pavilion in 2026, taking to the main stage for three special performances over Valentine’s weekend.

Originally premiering in the venue’s more intimate Blue Lounge, the show quickly became the space’s best-selling new musical, playing to packed audiences and receiving standing ovations at every performance.

In addition to the critical and popular success, audiences generously donated over £600 to the Friends of Clatterbridge Cancer Charity during the show’s original run.

Now, due to overwhelming demand, Under the Mersey Moon will move to the Floral Pavilion’s 800-seat auditorium, with performances scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, February 14–15, 2026, including a Saturday matinee.

Beloved broadcaster Billy Butler and actress Lesley Butler are confirmed to return to the stage, reprising their roles in the production. Additional casting details will be revealed soon.

Created by celebrated Liverpool songwriters Jimmy Rae and Pete Davies, the musical features 13 original numbers performed by a live six-piece band and a cast of 12. Direction is led by Birkenhead native Brian McCann.

Under the Mersey Moon tells the inspirational story of Danny Rogers, a struggling country singer from Liverpool. Spurred on by his ailing grandfather, Danny sets off for Nashville in a last-ditch effort to achieve his dreams—only to discover that the journey might offer more than he expected.

The production earned glowing reviews during its debut, with critics praising it as “a fantastic production that truly had everything…emotion, drama, humour, great music and twists.” Music journalist and broadcaster Spencer Leigh remarked it had “the potential to be another Twopence to Cross the Mersey.”

Rae and Davies, both respected names in Merseyside’s acoustic music scene, are known for their work in the duos Tennessee Waltz and Good Intentions. Pete Davies is also familiar to viewers of Granada TV’s long-running ‘Up’ documentary series, which has chronicled his life—and those of 13 others—every seven years since 1964.

Reflecting on the show’s debut, Wirral-born Jimmy Rae said:

“We were blown away by the response to the first shows we performed in February at The Floral’s Blue Lounge. Pete and I really believed in the script, the songs and the story we developed together, but it’s not until you put it in front of a live audience that you know for sure if a show is any good.

“As it was, we had three packed houses, standing ovations after every show and quite a few people moved to tears by the storyline which was just amazing. We can’t wait to bring it to the Floral’s main stage next year with an even bigger and better production.”

Floral Pavilion manager Pauline Campbell added:

“Under the Mersey Moon premiered at the Floral Pavilion’s Blue Lounge earlier this year and the audiences at the three sell-out performances absolutely loved it.

“It’s a really special show, with a beautiful original score showcasing excellent local writers, so I’m thrilled that it’s returning to the Floral next year and that we’re able to support its transition to our main stage – and onwards to a regional tour!

“I can’t wait to see it again and I’m sure it will get even more standing ovations.”

A Liverpool Theatre company is using a Shakespearean tragedy to help warn young people about the dangers of knife crime.

‘A Place For Us’ has joined forces with north west charity The JJ Effect, which delivers hard-hitting anti-knife crime presentations to help educate youngsters.

And in five areas where it performs its latest outdoor production of Romeo and Juliet this summer, A Place For Us will offer workshops led by the charity launched by Byron Highton, whose brother Jon-Jo was killed in 2014.

It’s part of a community project called All Are Punished, made possible by a grant awarded by the National Lottery Community Fund.

Kate Allerston, founder and director of A Place For Us, based in Woolton, says:

“We are doing a professional tour of Romeo and Juliet and of course that addresses a lot of the issues about knife crime.

“So we decided to partner up with The JJ Effect to deliver the set of five workshops across the North West which link in to our production.

“They are all aimed at young people because that’s the theme of the play aswell.

Macbeth - Romeo & Juliet - A Place For Us

“It’s an outdoor production, so it’s not going to schools but to main venues, and with the grant we are also able to offer 30 free tickets to people who come to each of the knife crime workshops to see the play.”

She goes on: “Shakespeare is one of our specialisms and I am a firm believer that Romeo and Juliet is not a love story.  It’s about five people who are murdered within two weeks or whatever it is, and a lot of that is to do with impetuous decisions that are made in the moment, in the heat of the moment, in chaos, and with knives.

“It’s a tale as old as time, but totally relevant to now.

“I was listening to the radio only the other day and there was a fatal stabbing of three young people in the North West, and it could have been the story we are telling. This is a 500-year-old story, but things haven’t changed.

“We need to be talking about it more, that it’s not a game to carry a knife!”

Chris Bastock, Kate’s husband and fellow artistic director of A Place For Us, adds:

“We have always recognised that performing arts and theatre drama has got a real power to impact people, so when you look at having something and someone as impactful as Byron from The JJ Effect put alongside a play which has its own emotions, it seems appropriate to weave those two together.

“It feels like there’s a social responsibility to do that.”

As well as a professional theatre company, A Place For Us is a community interest company which runs an award-winning theatre school, providing training and opportunities for young people, as well as community programmes and holiday theatre clubs.

While some might argue that the job of a theatre company is to entertain rather than educate Chris says:

“I think nowadays it’s impossible to separate those two things.  There’s so much power in drama and especially because we are involved in that ‘through process’ right from first access to professional.”

“And we work with young people,” continues Kate who, like Chris, has 35 years’ experience in the performing arts industry. “We see the horrors of what happens with violence, and we can’t just tell a story about five young people being stabbed to death without actually saying maybe there’s something else we can do here.

“You can just be entertained. You don’t have to come to a workshop. But if you are coming to the workshop and you have got an interest in it or you’ve got a concern, maybe about one of your family members, then you can see the show and see what happens and think ‘things haven’t changed that much have they?’.

“But then you can ask, well what do we do about that, or maybe it’s just a conversation that we start having?”

Romeo and Juliet will be performed in Runcorn, Widnes, Liverpool, Knowsley – at Shakespeare North Playhouse – and Bolton alone and as a double bill with Macbeth (with accessible abridged versions) from the end of June, with the workshops taking place in communities before. The dates are still to be finalised.

The plays will be performed alone and as a double bill in other areas too.

“What we are doing will add an edge or an opportunity to explore the themes around the play,” says Kate.

The Choir with No Name Liverpool will take to the stage at the Everyman Theatre on Friday 23 May 2025, inviting audiences to sing along to a joyful mix of rock and pop classics. The event—fittingly named The Big Gig—is not only a chance to raise the roof, but also raise vital funds to support the ongoing work of the choir.

Joining them on the night will be special guests Zoe West, a powerful indie-folk singer-songwriter from the North East, and Rek 41 Choir, part of a community group in Birkenhead supporting people in recovery from addiction and mental health challenges.

Founded in 2014, The Choir with No Name Liverpool has become a life-changing space for its members, offering music, friendship, and support. Weekly rehearsals in the city centre are followed by a shared hot meal, helping build a sense of community for those facing difficult times. Their performances are known for being uplifting, heartwarming, and packed with singalong spirit.

Zoe West brings deeply personal lyrics, infectious melodies and a standout live presence, having previously performed at Glastonbury alongside Billy Bragg. Birkenhead’s Rek 41 Choir, led by Sam Heller, provides a platform for community voices—many of whom are taking to the stage for the very first time.
