Each month Liverpool legend Pete Price lifts the curtain and takes you into the spotlight of Liverpool’s best theatres.

Not only will he look at the shows on right now that you should see, he’ll look ahead to let you know what’s coming while also re-living some of his – and the city’s – favourite moments on stage from years gone by.

Pete’s never short of an anecdote or an opinion, so here are the shows and stars that have got him talking in March …

What I’ve seen recently

If I say Now That’s What I Call A Musical at the Empire is the most frustrating show to watch, it’s not a criticism – it’s because you’re sitting down when you really just want to dance! It’s all about the class of ‘89 getting back together and what’s happened to them. Sonia was fabulous although I’d have liked to have seen more of her, I had no idea Nina Wadia, who’s such a good actress, could sing like that and what a powerful voice Sam Bailey’s got. It felt like a story everybody could relate to and I thought it was tremendous.

I did the Peaceful Hour on Radio City for 40 years and I recorded my part for this play at the Royal Court so I was dying to see how it worked. The central character loves the Peaceful Hour, she’s a fan, so it’s on throughout. It does feel a bit strange to be in a show and also in the audience but it’s very flattering and I believe it’s done phenomenally well. It’s obviously special to Liverpool audiences because The Peaceful Hour was so well-loved but it’s a love story so you could take it anywhere and I hope they do.

What’s coming up

Blood Brothers is returning to Liverpool Empire this week as the theatre celebrates its 100th anniversary. This is the show that just keeps on giving and it really does get more and more powerful each time you see it. It’s the first of two shows coming to the Empire stage as part of its centenary year, with Boys From The Blakstuff here next week. Where would this city’s theatre scene be without the Liverpool Empire – happy anniversary all.

Red or Dead, the story of Bill Shankly, is coming to the Royal Court from March 21 and I saw the rehearsals and couldn’t believe how good it was. It’s got a huge cast, there’s a choir on stage, so it’s going to be a very interesting piece of theatre. Shankly’s are ginormous shoes to fill but I think Peter’s going to be incredible.

War Horse at the Empire is one to look out for next month. I’ve seen it four times and it takes my breath away. I interviewed Joey the horse the last time he was in Liverpool and spoke to the puppeteers. I said ‘guys, it must be amazing to be in this horse’ and there was silence. The guy holding the reins said, ‘when they’re in that horse, they’re Joey, you’re interviewing the horse not them.’ I made sure I asked the rest of the questions to Joey!

Sharing the spotlight

The reviews for Shirley Valentine have been amazing – what a fantastic 60th birthday present to Liverpool from the Everyman. I first met director Stephen Fletcher when he came in last minute to the panto with Cilla in 2008 as the Prince. He’s directing this with Helen Carter as Shirley and they’re best mates so you can feel the magic between them. This is the second Shirley Valentine I’ve seen, as well as the film of course, and I think Helen could absolutely give Julie Walters a run for her money.

The showdown

I need to have a rant … how much longer do we have to put up with people opening sweet wrappers as soon as a show starts? It’s dreadful and they make no effort to do it quietly even. I actually stood up in the interval of one performance and said, ‘excuse me sir, on behalf of everybody in this audience, will you open your sweets now for the second half’ and everybody applauded. I took my hearing aids out the other week because it was so horrendous – I had no idea what they were saying on stage but there was no point anyway because I couldn’t hear a thing for all the rustling!

Liverpool legends Cast are set to mark the 30th anniversary of their seminal debut album All Change with a major UK and Ireland tour – ending in a massive homecoming show at Liverpool Olympia on 5 December.

The tour follows the band’s triumphant return with last year’s critically acclaimed album Love Is The Call, which earned Cast their highest chart position in 25 years.

With the added excitement of supporting Oasis on their long-awaited reunion tour, the band is now turning their attention to celebrating their roots, performing All Change in full for the first time.

Frontman, John Power said:

All Change was the debut record that captured the spirit and the energy of the band. It still feels as fresh as the day when we released it. You have to be of a certain time to record something so timeless and classic and I think we achieved that with ‘All Change’.”

The River Mersey is set to take a major step towards a cleaner future as Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram announces a groundbreaking partnership with United Utilities and the Mersey Rivers Trust.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) will support the Government’s Plan for the Water Sector by reducing pollution, cutting sewage discharges, and improving biodiversity – with the ultimate goal of achieving a discharge-free River Mersey by 2030.

The MOU commits the three partners to a joint five-year action plan aimed at reducing sewage discharges, improving water quality, and boosting biodiversity across the Liverpool City Region.

It is a collaborative effort to support the Government’s Storm Overflows Reduction Plan, which aims to cut discharges by 40% by 2040. In 2023, raw sewage was discharged into England’s rivers and seas for over 4 million hours, marking a 129% increase from the previous year. Data from environmental regulators in 2022 reported at least 399,864 instances of untreated sewage being released into UK rivers and coastlines, averaging approximately 1,091 times per day.

Mayor Steve Rotheram said the agreement was an opportunity to demonstrate how national and local leadership can work together to deliver meaningful change:

“The River Mersey is part of who we are – a symbol of our past and our future. We’ve made huge progress in cleaning up the river over the last 30 years, but now it’s time to finish the job. By working together with United Utilities, the Mersey Rivers Trust and the Government, we will accelerate the clean-up of our great river and work towards my ambition of a discharge-free Mersey by 2030.

“This partnership is about delivering on the Government’s national plan while demonstrating how local leadership can help accelerate progress. If we can do this in the Liverpool City Region, we can set a standard for others to follow. Together, we can make the Mersey – and rivers across the country – cleaner, greener, and healthier for future generations.”

The Liverpool City Region’s approach is designed to support and enhance the delivery of the Government’s national targets, while bringing forward faster local action. Under the MOU, the partners will develop a five-year pipeline of projects focused on improving water quality, reducing flood risks, and enhancing biodiversity. These projects will also explore innovative nature-based solutions, such as sustainable drainage systems and natural flood management techniques, to reduce pressure on the sewer network and cut the risk of overflows.

The partnership will work to ensure that local rivers meet and exceed national standards under the Water Framework Directive, supporting the Government’s aim for rivers to achieve ‘Good’ ecological status. Additionally, the partners are committed to enhancing public access to the region’s waterways, creating cleaner and safer spaces for communities to enjoy.

Louise Beardmore, Chief Executive Officer of United Utilities, welcomed the agreement and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to working in partnership to deliver results:

“We have an ambitious plan, including the largest ever investment programme in water and wastewater infrastructure in a century, to transform the region’s waterways and enable the step change people want to see. Our investment to significantly reduce discharges from storm overflows and improve water quality builds on our legacy partnership and founding membership of the Mersey Basin Campaign, which showed what we can achieve when we work together.

“We care deeply about the River Mersey and will continue to do everything we can to ensure its healthy future. That’s why we are fully committed to working in partnership with the Liverpool City Region and Mersey Rivers Trust to deliver transformational improvements that support the Government’s goals for the water sector.”

John Sanders, Co-Director of the Mersey Rivers Trust, praised the collaborative approach and its potential to build on decades of progress in improving the health of local waterways:

“The Mersey Rivers Trust is proud to be part of this pioneering partnership. Over the years, we’ve seen the Mersey recover from one of the most polluted rivers in Europe to a symbol of environmental regeneration. This agreement ensures that we continue to build on that success, helping to deliver the Government’s national water quality goals while making our local rivers cleaner and more accessible for everyone.”

The Liverpool City Region’s initiative is not only a local project, but a demonstration of how regional action can help deliver national outcomes. By directly contributing to the targets set out in the Government’s Plan for the Water Sector, the partnership aims to serve as a model for other regions, showing how local leadership, industry collaboration, and community involvement can drive faster progress on water quality.

Mayor Rotheram praised the Government’s leadership on water quality and highlighted how local partnerships can help deliver faster results:

“The Government’s Plan for the Water Sector is a welcome step forward in protecting our rivers, and I want to make sure that Liverpool City Region is at the forefront of delivering that mission. This isn’t about pointing fingers – it’s about rolling up our sleeves and working together to solve the problem. With this agreement, we’re showing how national ambition, local leadership, and industry action can come together to deliver results faster, for people, communities, and nature.”

The agreement between the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, United Utilities, and the Mersey Rivers Trust will also include a joint programme of water management projects in collaboration with local authorities, developers, and community organisations.

These projects will align with the Government’s objectives for reducing pollution, protecting habitats, and increasing the resilience of water infrastructure to climate change impacts.

The Mayor concluded by inviting other regions to learn from Liverpool City Region’s experience and to contribute to the collective national effort to improve water quality:

“Our ambition is to make the River Mersey a national example of what can be achieved when we work together. We know that the challenge of cleaning up our rivers is not unique to us – communities up and down the country are demanding change.

“That’s why we’re not just acting locally, we’re sharing what we learn to help drive national progress. By aligning our local ambition with the Government’s national plan, we’re proving that faster, better outcomes are possible – and that by working together, we can leave a cleaner, healthier environment for generations to come.”

It only holds a crowd of 250 – 200 in pews and the rest in seats either side – but a south Liverpool church has become one of the city’s coolest live music venues.

The historic Grade I listed St Michael’s-in-the-Hamlet Church used to be known for its distinctive cast iron architecture but now it’s famous for another reason – St Michael’s Live.

Over the past four years, it’s attracted famous names from the music industry including Paul Weller, Cast frontman John Power, Chris Difford from Squeeze and American soul singer P.P. Arnold.

Tickets for a show in May by Bernard Butler, ex of Suede, were snapped up and there’s a waiting list.

Organisers expect to put on around 20 shows altogether in 2025, with a line-up combining well known artists and local emerging bands and singers.

Although it’s now developed a life of its own, St Michael’s Live began as a way to raise funds for the neighbouring St Michael’s Primary School.

Musician Steve Pilgrim got involved to help out and the idea has just kept on growing.

He explains: “The school approached me and asked if I’d look at the church because they were thinking of doing a music event there. When the vicar showed me around it was obvious it was going to be a really special place.

“The main church building was stunning – the shape of the room, the beautiful stained glass window, the altar.

“The first show we put on was pre-Covid then everyone went into lockdown, but the idea was still there that we could do something once events were allowed to happen again. It wasn’t until the end of 2021 that we put the first one on and we did three shows that year.

“The church was happy for us to put something on because it’s good for footfall, activity and income, and it’s bringing people into the space that wouldn’t necessarily otherwise go there.”

Steve, who’s had a 25-year career in the music business including as a drummer on tour with Paul Weller, kicked St Michael’s Live off by going through his own contacts.

“I knew a few people I’ve worked with over the years which was really helpful at the start and then one thing led to another – one artist would have the same agency as another so then it was easy to build relationships and that’s how it’s grown organically.”

Having Paul Weller play there in 2023 certainly helped put St Michael’s on the map as a credible live music venue.

“He’d seen photographs from previous events – we’d already had Chris Difford, John Power and John Smith who’s a big name on the English folk scene – and I’d been raving about it,” says Steve.

“We wanted to do something for charity, he’s into supporting that kind of thing, and we managed to raise £14,000 for a foodbank in town, Micah Liverpool, on one night.”

Despite its success, Steve says they’re not looking to make St Michael’s into a full-time venue space at weekends. It’s still very much an active church, holding weekly services on Wednesday and Sunday mornings as well as weddings, funerals and baptisms.

The line-up also has to be carefully planned to take into account the unique nature of the space.

“We work closely with Rob who’s the in-house engineer because anything past a certain volume doesn’t work so we can’t host punk or metal bands. It’s got to be at the acoustic end of things but if it stays within that level it’s really nice for natural acoustics and reverbs.

“St Michael’s Live is run on limited licences, so we look to do 15-20 shows a year depending on what comes up and what offers we get.

“We run our headline shows alongside St Michael’s Sessions which are multi-artist nights. We try to bring in more locally-based artists and have maybe three per show with more of a balanced billing so each artist gets a longer set.

“They work really well and they’re a way for us to support local acts, not just have the bigger name touring artists.”

“There’s the Summer School, the Youth Theatre, the Community Choir, and their Variety Club lunches—unbeatable nuggets of joy and warmth. It’s amazing, and I am so proud to be able to offer it all the support I can as the new Chair of the charitable board.

“I’m really looking forward to working with the brilliant team in the theatre to make sure it keeps going and keeps getting better.”

Liverpool’s Royal Court Theatre continues to be a driving force in the city’s cultural scene, known for its bold productions, grassroots engagement, and unwavering commitment to community projects.

A multi-million pound programme that has significantly improved Liverpool’s road and street infrastructure, is nearing completion.

The first phase of the Highways Investment Programme (HIP1) was completed in November 2023, while phase two (HIP2) commenced in September 2023 and is on track to finish this summer.

The programme has demonstrated a strong commitment to environmental sustainability, with the recycling of over 3,000 tonnes of materials, diverting waste from landfills. Additionally, the programme has achieved a reduction of 68 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

HIP2 represents an additional £11 million investment in the city’s infrastructure, further demonstrating Liverpool City Council’s commitment to providing a safe and efficient transportation network.

These combined efforts represent a substantial investment in the city’s transport network, prioritising safety, accessibility, and sustainability.

The programme has generated significant economic benefits, with more than £1 million invested in local small businesses and more than £2 million spent with local suppliers.

The initiative has also created significant employment opportunities, with 19 long-term unemployed individuals securing positions and 163 weeks of apprenticeships supported.

A key part of the project was creating smoother roads. Over 100,000 square meters of roads in Liverpool have been given new surfaces.

Safer pavements were created by fixing flags and curbs, adding new drop curbs, and improving drainage.

More than 100 new tactile crossings were installed to help people cross the street safely.

In north Liverpool improvements have included a new drainage system installed at Priory Road in Anfield, and works in Fazakerley West to Elstead Road, Waresley Crescent and Studland Road.

Blackburne Place in the city centre’s Georgian Quarter – renowned for its heritage and charm – underwent essential infrastructure improvements to preserve its character and enhance functionality. The work was also delivered with sustainable construction methods, utilising recycled asphalt planings, bio-materials and electric plant vehicles to reduce carbon emissions and support the switch to a net zero city.

In south Liverpool, roads were improved in Speke West to East Mains, Alder Wood Avenue and Alderfield Drive. Penny Lane ward saw improvements made on Ribbledale Road, Cherrydale Road and Millersdale Road.

As part of the first phase of the project, Liverpool City Council made the Loop Line better for bikes and built a brand-new “Places to Ride – Mini Roads” bike track in Everton Park.

This special track is designed to help kids learn to ride and have fun on their bikes. It was completed by turning an old amphitheatre into the fantastic learn-to-ride bike track for kids. Working with British Cycling, Liverpool City Council have created a safe and fun place for young cyclists.

Councillor Dan Barrington, Deputy leader of Liverpool City Council and Cabinet Member for Transport and Connectivity, said:

“This has been a long-term project that has seen a real difference in the quality of our cities roads.

“Drivers, cyclists, public transport users and pedestrians have all benefitted from this project. But what is also really pleasing, is the economic and employment benefits that the project has had.

“This project has created real prosperity and positive change to the people and fabric of our city.

“Liverpool City Council remains dedicated to enhancing the city’s infrastructure to improve the quality of life for all residents. The Highways Investment Programme represents a significant step towards creating a safer, more accessible, and sustainable city.”

Liverpool City Region is set to strengthen its position as a global leader in health innovation with a multi-million-pound investment in pioneering children’s healthcare and life sciences.

A £9.44m project at Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is in line to receive £4.16m from the Combined Authority, supporting groundbreaking research and innovation that will transform paediatric healthcare and create high-quality jobs across the region.

Alder Hey’s Paediatric Open Innovation Zone (POIZ) will be at the forefront of developing, testing, and deploying life-changing technologies to tackle some of the biggest health challenges faced by children and young people in the region.

The programme will prioritise collaboration with local innovators and is expected to generate high-quality jobs while delivering significant health and social benefits across the city region.

The Liverpool City Region Combined Authority today approved £4.16m for the project. As one of the world’s leading children’s hospitals, Alder Hey is already home to the UK’s largest hospital-led innovation centre, pioneering new approaches to paediatric healthcare.

Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram said:

“Alder Hey is world-class, not just for the outstanding care it provides but for its relentless drive to push the boundaries of children’s healthcare. This funding is an investment in our future, giving young people the best possible start in life while cementing our position as a global leader in health innovation.

“It’s also an investment in high-quality jobs, skills, and economic growth for our region. We’re proving once again that the Liverpool City Region is a place where we turn great ideas into action, and where we will keep pushing the boundaries of innovation for the benefit of our communities.”

The POIZ programme will provide innovators with direct access to Alder Hey’s clinical expertise, enabling joint development of new paediatric treatments. It will also serve as a real-world testbed for validating healthcare innovations and offer consultancy and training to help embed innovation-led care across the Liverpool City Region’s hospitals.

Additionally, the programme will support NHS and industry partners both in the UK and internationally, sharing Alder Hey’s expertise and best practice in healthcare innovation.

Iain Hennessey, Consultant Surgeon and Clinical Director of Innovation at Alder Hey, said:

“Our children are the future, and technology is the key to shaping a healthier one. At Alder Hey, innovation is in our DNA, and our purpose-built Innovation Hub is a driving force in tackling modern healthcare challenges. With this vital funding, we can accelerate our mission—collaborating with businesses, academics, and forward-thinkers to turn today’s children into tomorrow’s healthier adults.”

At the same Combined Authority meeting, leaders also approved £4.24m of Innovation Zone funding for a new business support programme, Innovate, Grow, Accelerate and Partner (IGAP), led by LYVA Labs.

The five-year initiative will help early-stage and scaling businesses to develop and commercialise cutting-edge health and life sciences technologies.

Delivered through three workstreams – incubator, accelerator, and challenge fund – IGAP will plug gaps in early-stage investment, providing vital technical, financial, and business support for local start-ups, spinouts, and SMEs.

Lorna Green, CEO of LYVA Labs, said:

“LYVA Labs’ Innovation Zone funding will accelerate and maximise our capacity to invest in, support, and promote early-stage businesses that are developing innovative clean tech, health and life sciences, and deep tech products.

“The Clean Tech for Health Challenge Fund will enable us to invest in technologies that improve health outcomes and support sustainable healthcare delivery. We are privileged to work in a region that recognises, invests in, and fosters innovation and with a combined authority that enables collaboration to drive economic growth.”

LYVA Labs was launched with £10.5m of Combined Authority investment in 2021 to help transform pioneering ideas into high-growth businesses and high-value jobs. To date, it has invested £1.62m into 20 businesses, helping create 50 skilled jobs in the Liverpool City Region.

Together, the POIZ and IGAP programmes are expected to support 108 businesses and create at least 115 new jobs. They are part of the wider Liverpool City Region Life Sciences Innovation Zone programme, a 10-year initiative designed to attract up to £800m in public and private investment and generate 8,000 skilled jobs in the region.

Cllr Liam Robinson, Cabinet Member for Innovation said:

“Liverpool City Region is a life sciences powerhouse and through our Innovation Zone we have the funding to help take it to the next level.

“These are two excellent projects that will help innovators turn their bright ideas into great businesses while tackling serious health problems in the city region – especially within children and young people. I look forward to seeing these initiatives progress and the benefits and opportunities they can bring.”

The Liverpool City Region Life Sciences Innovation Zone Programme forms part of the Government’s national Investment Zone Programme, positioning the city region as a powerhouse for health and life sciences innovation.

The development of the new Birkenhead Market has reached a major milestone, with Wirral Council appointing a contractor to move the project forward towards the construction phase.

Following a competitive bidding process, Seddon Construction has been selected to carry out pre-construction services on the Birkenhead Market at 1 Princes Pavement, located next to Birkenhead Bus Station.

This is a crucial step in delivering a new, modern Market Hall that will play a key role in the regeneration of Birkenhead town centre.

Four experienced contractors had bid for the work and following evaluation by the project team and advisors Seddon Construction was found to be the preferred tenderer.

Leader of Wirral Council, Cllr Paul Stuart, said:

“Progress on the new Market is an important part of our wider plans for Birkenhead so it’s great to see this continuing to move forward. We are committed to delivering a vibrant and popular new Birkenhead Market and this is part of a massive investment in the town and its central shopping area.

“Our intention is to ensure Birkenhead is a destination people want to visit as part of attracting the inward investment which will bring high-quality jobs for our residents, give extra stimulus to the local economy, boost business opportunities, and through all this foster economic growth. In this way we can make Wirral an even better place where people want to live, work and raise their families.”

The “soft strip” demolition of the unit at Princes Pavement was completed late last year, opening the way for the fit-out work starting for the new market.

This had followed engagement with community and traders on proposals for the market including presenting detailed design images showing how the new revitalised Birkenhead Market could look, including potential layout for traders’ stalls.

This latest contract is to finalise the design of the new Birkenhead Market and inform a fixed price for the next construction phase, at a contract price of £188,487.31 with a contingency of £50,000 built in to cover any additional surveys that are identified as a requirement for design development.

The target delivery programme indicates a practical completion date for the main base build works of March 2026.

People are being asked to give their views on enhancements for pedestrian facilities, the improvement of links to the Marine Lake Events Centre and the creation of new public spaces that can be enjoyed by visitors.

Sefton Council wants business owners, schools, visitors, and representatives from the transport and tourism sectors to have their say. Residents from the wider Southport area are also being encouraged to contribute their views.

Liverpool Arab Arts Festival (LAAF), the longest running annual festival of Arab arts and culture in the UK, returns for its 23rd year this July.

Founded in 1998, LAAF exists to support and champion creatives from across the Arab region and its diaspora, in the belief that art and creativity have the power to express a shared humanity.

The festival also celebrates Liverpool’s unique identity; a city, with a global community and brimming with artistry, that looks outwards across the world and welcomes and accepts all who arrive within it.

This year’s festival theme is Nostalgia, which will be explored through a diverse range of disciplines, including music, theatre and performance, visual art, literature and film – with the programme culminating at the ever-popular LAAF Family Day.

Liverpool Arab Arts Festival

Nostalgia evokes a longing for the past, both in individual and collective experiences. Whether rooted in childhood memories or recent defining moments, it often has an idealised or romanticised connotation.

Within the Arab world and its diaspora communities, you will find that nostalgia transcends mere sentimentality. Indeed, it translates the need to reclaim and preserve cultural identities, acting as a parallel resistance to the internal changes and surrounding shifts that shape them. Increasingly, MENA artists use the culture of nostalgia to bridge between nations and generations, while unlocking connections of the past and present. Whether by revising treasured memories or revisiting historical narratives, it has become a powerful means for honouring, revival and continuity.

This is the journey LAAF would like to invite audiences on at this year’s festival. From one-person performances and family events to film screenings, a golden music era homage, authentic embroidery and cultural cuisine workshops, talks and literature events; the notion of nostalgia is woven throughout this year’s festival programme, it will undoubtedly resonate with the challenging context we witness today.

At a time when war and violence fill screens on a daily basis, LAAF believes passionately in the ability – and in the freedom – of artists who are documenting and narrating change.

Liverpool Arab Arts Festival

The first two events announced for LAAF 2025:

Akram Abdulfattah

On Saturday 19th July, LAAF welcomes the young Palestinian-American violin master, Akram Abdulfattah, to the Philharmonic Music Room. Abdulfattah combines jazz with middle eastern and Indian music, with a style that creates a world of fusion music. Rooted in Middle Eastern traditions whilst influenced by Hindu, Turkish, and Persian styles, Abdulfattah reflects the rich legacy and culture of oriental sounds in a modernised fashion.

Tickets are on sale now via the venue’s website.

LAAF Family Day

Taking place on the final day of the festival, Sunday 20th July, the long-established LAAF Family Day is a celebratory showcase of Arab arts and culture.

Creating a moment of togetherness and community, Sefton Park’s Palm House will play host to a free afternoon of music, performance and authentic Arab culture, complemented by a range of stalls offering Arabic and Middle Eastern food, arts and crafts, traditional practices such as calligraphy and dance, as well as activities for children, including storytelling and workshops.
