Africa Oyé’s Artistic Director, Paul Duhaney has received an honorary degree from the University of Liverpool.
The honorary doctorate of music was conferred during a week of ceremonies at the city’s Metropolitan Cathedral, in which nearly 8000 students graduated.
One of seven esteemed figures from across business, music, science, and tech to receive the honour last week, fellow recipients include Professor Dr Shirley J. Thompson OBE, composer for His Majesty the King Charles II’s coronation, and Liverpool-born tech entrepreneur, Dr Steve Garnett.
Paul Duhaney’s vision and leadership have made Africa Oyé an extraordinary festival which is a phenomenal and unique contribution to the cultural life of the city of Liverpool and of the world beyond.
At the ceremony last week, those in attendance heard of Paul’s musical beginnings in London, organising club nights and as a DJ on the thriving rave scene.
Moving to Liverpool in 1999, Paul started as a trainee with Oyé whilst studying on an Event Management course at Liverpool Community College. Under the mentorship of the organisation’s founder, Kenny Murray, Paul’s inspiration and drive saw the potential to grow the festival.
Becoming Artistic Director in 2013 upon Kenny’s retirement, Paul was able to make changes that have seen Oyé’s flagship celebration of music and culture become the biggest of its kind in the country.
In his speech to the graduates in attendance, Paul spoke of the importance of taking your time to find what you want to do with your career as well as championing the notion of quite simply being kind to people, and always giving others the time of day as you never know where new relationships may lead.
Paul Duhaney said:
“This is without a doubt the highlight of my career. To receive this award is an absolute honour, particularly from such a prestigious university, at a ceremony taking place in such an iconic building in the city; the city I work in and the place I love and call home. Thank you to everyone who has supported my work over the last 25 years; I really appreciate you all.”
University of Liverpool Vice-Chancellor Professor Tim Jones said:
“I am delighted to formally acknowledge our admiration and recognition of our honorary graduates. From former students to those who have developed a relationship with us in their professional lives, we are honoured to welcome them to the University of Liverpool family.
They join us during one of the most important weeks in our calendar, where students and families celebrate many years of hard work and dedication. As well as formally receiving their awards, our honorary recipients shared their experiences, providing graduands with invaluable insights as they embark on the next chapter of their lives.”
