We’re huge fans of old school Hollywood here at The Guide Liverpool and we were a bit over excited to take our seats for That’s Enterainment with special guests, The Overtones at The Liverpiol Empire last night, because who doesn’t love the old show tunes?
Totally prepared for a good sing-a-long we’d barely browsed through the programme before a rousing tap performance knocked our socks off. Fred and Ginger would’ve been impressed that’s for sure.
The show takes the audience on a journey back to the 40’s and 50’s with songs such as ‘Putting On The Ritz’ and ‘Get Happy’ alongside stunning choreography that had the audience clapping and swaying along from the very start.
Special guests The Overtones made their first of three appearances to rapturous applause and cheering and proceeded to whip the crowd up into a frenzy with their rendition of Roy Orbinson’s ‘Pretty Woman’. Definitely a hit with the ladies, the band had clearly enjoyed their time in the city over the years as baritone vocalist, Lachie promised a ‘boss night’ of entertainment.
He wasn’t wrong! From Judy Garland to Sammy Davis Junior, the old school classics just kept coming. Hits from films and musicals such as ‘South Pacific’ and ‘Carousel’ brought back the innocence of the era and how holding hands with your loved one was the sweetest thing. Awww!
We’d have loved to have experienced a live orchestra to add to the atmosphere of the show but with technically brilliant dance performances that were so perfectly choreographed and some knock out solo vocalists, we’re not sure we’d have noticed a band anyway!!
That’s Entertainment runs until Saturday with evening and matinee performance tickets still available. If you like a bit of ‘Knees Up Mother Brown’ (our fave) or ‘Rock-A-Bye Your Baby’ then this is the show for you!
