Run to Remember The 96 Relay this weekend

There’s a brand new running event taking place at Seacombe Promenade to remember The 96 and you can join in for FREE.

The inaugural Run To Remember 96K Relay takes place along Seacombe Promenade this Sunday (6 May). The endurance challenge is the first of two special running events in May to celebrate the lives of 96 Liverpool fans, who were unlawfully killed in the Hillsborough tragedy on 15 April 1989, the events also remember the families of The 96 and the survivors, who have tirelessly fought for justice with the utmost dignity for 29 years.

Each kilometre of the relay will be dedicated to one of The 96. Runners are invited to join in on the day, and spectators are welcome. The relay event is a curtain raiser to the fourth annual Run For The 96 5K and 1K Fun Run, which takes place on Saturday, 12 May, in Liverpool’s Stanley Park. A group of keen runners will take part in the 96K Relay this Sunday – which amounts to approximately 60 miles.

The team, brought together by Dom Williams, first completed a 96-mile route between Hillsborough and Anfield in 2012, and have since taken on mammoth distances between the two cities each year. But this time round, and together with BTR Race Director Alan Rothwell, this new challenge has been created on home turf to encourage the public to get involved.

BTR Race Director Alan Rothwell commented: “The running events over the next two weekends celebrate the lives of The 96 in a very fitting way, when Red and Blue football fans stand together side by side for this very special cause. The Run To Remember 96K Relay is going to be quite challenge for the team to cover in one day. The 96 kilometres will be dedicated to each of the Liverpool fans lost at Hillsborough – and with that in mind, I am sure that when they clock up the distance and it starts getting difficult, remembering why they’re doing this will most definitely spur them on.

“Everyone is welcome to come along to Seacombe Promenade to take part and cheer on the endurance team. Support and encouragement will make a big difference on the day.”

The runners will set off at 9am this Sunday (6 May), and the relay is expected to continue until 6pm. Runners and spectators are invited. Those taking part can choose the distance they would like to run. The recently dedicated Memorial Gardens To The 96 at Wallasey Town Hall will be the focal point of the day.

The Run To Remember 96K Relay will take place on Seacombe Promenade near the Town Hall steps, leading down from the memorial garden. A 1K route will be marked out, and runners can take part at any time of the day between 9am and 6pm. Registration will be in Wallasey Town Hall. The event is free to take part. Donations can be made on the day to the event’s official three beneficiaries – Jamie Carragher’s 23 Foundation, Everton in the Community, and Stanley Park Liverpool CIC.

The three organisations will benefit from funds donated and/or raised by participants. Together, they support the vision of creating a positive community legacy event, and commitment to ensuring that local communities benefit from the legacy run. The official online donation page can be found here.  The event is also supported by Wirral Council; the Hillsborough Family Support Group; and Liverpool Football Club’s official charity, the LFC Foundation.

Runners wishing to take part in the Run To Remember 96K Relay can register on the day at Wallasey Town Hall. Entry is free, donations are welcome. Run For The 96 5K finishers will receive a commemorative medal and a red or blue T-shirt. The T-shirts are available in advance, to be worn for the run.
