If you’ve ever legged it through Liverpool John Lennon Airport to catch a flight, you’ll know the rush. But this November, passengers won’t be the only ones sprinting along the tarmac — the runway is opening up for hundreds of runners, all raising money for Alder Hey Children’s Charity.

In the early hours of Saturday 22 November, while most of the city is tucked up in bed, up to 350 people will be lining up on the runway at Liverpool John Lennon Airport for a one-of-a-kind 5k Night Run. Instead of guiding planes, the runway lights will shine the way for everyone taking part.

It’s all happening thanks to a rare break in the flight schedule — between 2am and 3.30am — when the runway will be handed over for a good cause without disrupting any take-offs or landings.

The unique run is backed by sponsors including easyJet, easyJet Holidays, Ravenair, Wilson James and the M&S Bank Arena. Everyone taking part will pay a £35 registration fee and aim to raise at least £100 in sponsorship. Every penny goes towards Alder Hey’s target of £86,000 to help buy specialist medical kit for the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Runners will even have the chance to win prizes like flights and vouchers, donated by main sponsor easyJet.

Carol Dutton, HR and Community Director at LJLA, says this is a rare chance to do something unforgettable for a brilliant cause. “Opportunities like this don’t come round very often so we’re hoping runners from across the region will get involved and help us raise thousands of pounds for Alder Hey.”

Katy Armitage from Alder Hey Children’s Charity added: “We’re so grateful to everyone making this happen. The money raised will help us provide vital care for some of our smallest and most vulnerable patients.”

So if you fancy swapping your trainers for a boarding pass for once — and ticking off a bucket-list run at the same time — sign up and lace up for Alder Hey.
