Smithdown Social Arts Hub, in collaboration with The Hightown Inn pub, is proud to announce the launch of a brand-new art initiative that will bring local artists into the heart of Hightown.

The first exhibition to be showcased is themed, “By the Water” and will officially open Thursday 25th September. Curated by Smithdown Social, it will feature the work of 15 local artists. Each artist selected either lives, works or has a strong connection to Sefton and Hightown, making this a truly community-focused celebration of art and creativity.

Smithdown Social Arts Hub is a vibrant community-driven creative space on Smithdown Road in Liverpool. Dedicated to supporting artists and making the arts accessible to all, the hub operates with a profit-for-artist ethos and hosts exhibitions, performances, workshops, and community projects that celebrate creativity in multiple formats. With a mission to bring people together and improve lives through the power of creativity, Smithdown Social Arts Hub provides exhibition opportunities for both emerging and established artists, and engages audiences with inclusive, innovative, cultural experiences.

The artwork will be displayed in the pub’s back room which has been newly named The Hightown Gallery, creating a unique setting where visitors can view and purchase original pieces while enjoying the warm atmosphere of a much-loved local venue.

Matt Farrell, co-owner of The Hightown Inn, said:

“We’re really excited to be working with Smithdown Social to give local artists a platform and to make art a part of everyday life in Hightown,”

“It’s a fantastic way to support our creative community while offering something different for our guests.”

Among the artists taking part is Ted Carless who has lived in Hightown for over 50 years. Reflecting on his connection to the village, he recalls:

“I was the first to cross the threshold when the new Hightown Inn opened its doors, and I’ve enjoyed countless meals and made memories here with my family. It’s a real privilege to now be part of something that celebrates our community’s creativity in such a meaningful way.”

Another exhibitor Betty Molyneux, who grew up in Crosby and now lives in the West Midlands, said:

“What an honour to have two of my paintings selected for the exhibition at The Hightown Inn. My dad was a sailor, and the sea is in my DNA. In my Dads later years when his health sadly declined we would often come for lunch at The Hightown Inn, our trips there became a cherished ritual. Journeys, both emotional and physical, are recurring themes in my work and it means the world to share them in a place that holds such deep personal significance for me and my family.”

Brenda Monahan, Co-Director/Curator of Smithdown Social Arts Hub said:

“Since 2018, our mission has been to champion creativity and keep people creating”

“Partnering with The Hightown Inn gives local artists a fantastic platform to showcase their work and earn income.”

Exhibitions in the gallery room at The Hightown Inn will rotate every three months, ensuring fresh opportunities for new artists to showcase their work. The second exhibition, “Winter in the Village”, is set to open on 27th November, continuing the initiative into the festive season.

All the original art in the exhibition(s) will be available to purchase using a simple QR code link to Smithdown Social Arts Hub’s website, with the option to purchase Giclee prints of each piece in a variety of sizes.
